        The Role of Guadua Bamboo in South America -From Vernacular Architecture to Sustainable Building Material-

        자연과 관련하여 현대 건축에 대한 보다 깊은 접근법을 모색하는 과정에서 과거의 업적은 때로 가려지기도 한다. 그중 하나가 버내큘러 건축인데, 정의 상으로는 사용자의 요구를 충족시키기 위해 물질적, 형태적, 자연적 맥락 사이의 균형을 추구한다는 뜻이다. 건축학 연구의 특히 중요한 측면은 재료의 사용이다. 지구 온난화로 인해 지속 가능한 재료의 사용이 전세계적으로 주목을 받고 있으며, 대나무는 아시아, 아프리카, 남미 등 대륙에서 가장 오래된 건축자재 중 하나로 나타나는 널리 사용되는 지속가능한 재료다. 과두아 대나무는 특성이 좋아 미국에서 가장 많이 찾는 재료 중 하나이다. 이 연구는 현대의 지속 가능한 건축에 영향을 준 버내큘러 특성을 판단하기 위해 분석에서 에콰도르와 콜롬비아를 선정했다. 본 연구의 목적은 버내큘러 유산과 대나무를 사용한 현대 건축에 대한 정성적 연구와 관련하여 남아메리카 국가에서 지속 가능한 재료로서 과두아 대나무의 역할을 이해하는 것이다. 버내큘러 건축이 지속 가능한 아키텍처 개선에 긍정적으로 기여할 수 있음을 입증한다. 이에 더하여 건축물의 지속 가능한 특성을 보다 잘 이해하여 지속 가능한 재료로서 과두아 대나무가 건축에 응용될 수 있는 방법을 공개한다. 오늘날 남아메리카의 현대 건축으로 인해 끊임없는 변화가 일어나고 있으며, 그 변화는 공간의 기능적 필요성과 건축 측면 모두에서 발생한다. 본 연구에서 사례연구 분석은 공학, 설계, 건설 분야로 분류된다. 여기에는 문헌 검토와 분석적 서술 방법이 사용된다. 본 연구는 에콰도르와 콜롬비아의 대나무를 이용해 남미에서 대표하는 현 시대의 지속 가능한 건축의 특성을 제시하고, 버내큘러 건축이 과두아 대나무의 지속 가능한 건축에 어떻게 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있는지에 대한 교훈과 권고사항을 정하게 된다. 연구결과에 따르면 과두아대나무는 지속가능한 건축과 디자인에 유익할 수 있는 잠재적 대안 재료로 지속 가능한 설계문화, 지역자재와의 지속 가능성, 보강설계, 건축자재와 기법, 지속 가능한 소비와 생산, 환경 등 6가지 이상의 장점을 가지고 있다. 본 연구는 지속 가능한 개발을 위한 분석 및 설계를 위한 데이터베이스 역할을 할 수 있는 설계, 건축, 조경 분야에서의 과두아 대나무 건축의 중요한 측면을 입증한다. 본 연구의 결과는 유용한 자료로 활용될 것으로 기대한다. In the search for a deeper approach to contemporary architecture in relation to nature, the achievements of the past are sometimes hidden. One of them is vernacular architecture, which, by definition, seeks the balance between material, form, and natural context to satisfy the needs of users. A particularly important aspect of the study of architecture is the use of materials. Due to global warming, the use of sustainable materials is drawing attention worldwide, and bamboo is a widely used sustainable material that emerges as one of the oldest building materials on the continent, including Asia, Africa and South America. Guadua bamboo is the most sought-after types in America due to its favorable characteristics and often compared to its Asian counterpart, Moso (Phyllostachys edulis). The study selected Ecuador and Colombia in its analysis to determine the characteristics of the vernacular that affected modern sustainable architecture. The objectives of this study are to understand the role of guadua bamboo in the countries of South America as a sustainable material in correlation with its vernacular heritage with qualitative research of contemporary architecture using bamboo; demonstrate that vernacular architecture can positively contribute to improving the sustainable architecture; and, expose the ways in which guadua bamboo can be applied in the construction of buildings as a sustainable material through a better understanding of its sustainable characteristics. Due to modern architecture in South America is undergoing constant change, and the changes occur both in terms of the functional needs of the space and in terms of construction. The analysis of the case studies of this research are classified in engineering, design, and construction. For which, a review of the literature and the analytical-descriptive method will be used. This study will provide the characteristics of sustainable architecture in the current era that uses bamboo in Ecuador and Colombia as representation in South America and will determine the lessons and recommendations on how vernacular architecture can positively influence the sustainable construction of guadua bamboo. Research findings show that guadua bamboo has at least six main benefits, being a potential alternative material that can be beneficial in sustainable construction and design: sustainable design culture, sustainability with local materials, reinforcement design, construction materials and techniques, sustainable consumption and production, and environmental sustainability. It is expected that this study documents relevant information, demonstrates important aspects of guadua bamboo construction in the field of design, architecture, and landscape architecture that can serve as a database for analysis and design of future sustainable projects around the world.

        믹 피어스의 건축에 나타난 지속가능성의 특성 연구

        Social problem derived from the excessive development brought out the issue of `sustainability` in modern society. Along with increased concerns regarding environmental problems, `sustainable development` has proposed as a resolution, in this respect each country is putting huge effort in respect to its` own situation and environment, particularly implementing such solutions in the field of architecture. Mick Pearce, the architect who have shown the ecological structural buildings, but still research and analysis regarding such is inadequate. Therefore, the aim of this research is acknowledge the importance of sustainable architecture and through analysis of architectural structures that put emphasis on 2003 Prince Cloud Award winner Mick Pearce`s `sustainable architecture`, this paper focuses on deducting the characteristics and implications of sustainable construction thus to provide theoretical basis. (Method) This research identifies the concept of sustainable architect through examining preceding research and documents while contemplating the background and features of Mick Pearce`s constructions. Through such, categorized the sustainable architecture in to three major key terms; ecology, collectivity, and technology. Selected four representative works of Mick Pearce which have showed the sustainable concepts including renown shopping center as for cases, and analyzed the features and effects based on the deducted key terms. (Results) It was verified that the features of sustainable architecture are applied to all four cases. In the perspective of sustainability, Pearce have considered the total energy consumption to minimize the environmental damage while effectively reducing emitted energy. Secondly, in the collectivity aspect, these buildings are open to public with numerous cultural facilities thus functioned as a core competence, enhancing value and acknowledging the importance of sustainability. Moreover, most of the constructions became the land mark within the region benefiting the location by showing enlarged business district, transportation and increased quality of the cultural facilities. Lastly, in the perspective of technology, these buildings have saved maintenance expenses by implementing be fitting technologies thus able to save energy. (Conclusion) This research have proven that not only Pierce`s sustainable architect saved the energy, but contemplating major key factors as a sustainable construction. The acknowledgement of the term `sustainable architect` which defined in this paper through arranging past literatures might be a good starting point for the further study. This research has its own meaning in a sense that it proposed a direction for the Korea`s future `sustainable architect.` In a hope for further implementation of sustainable construction, further research and facilitation is necessary.

      • 지속가능한 호텔디자인에 관한 연구

        Since modernism, contemporary architecture has formed an internationalist architectural style that pursues general universality without regard to relativity or diversity. It has begun to create standardized and uniformized architecture and space without regard to the specificity and environment of the area. In order to overcome it, future architecture should approach not only from aesthetic point of view, but from a local, ecological, and natural point of view and we need to value that not to change over time, natural, sustainable architecture. Therefore, this study analyzed how to move toward sustainable direction in contemporary architecture, especially hotel design. This study starts from analyzing sustainable design and factors in contemporary architecture. First, sustainability can be discussed in terms of the use of materials in architecture. Second, sustainable architecture can be discussed in terms of ecological architecture. Third, we can discuss sustainability in vernacular architecture. Fourth, it is possible to maintain existed inherent characteristics of the design, discussing sustainability through transformation or reproduction. Based on these four categories, I analyzed the characteristics and how it applies to each hotel case In order to maintain sustainability in future hotel design and hotel construction. With the development of high technology and indiscreet development of modern civilization, nature and humanity are gradually collapsing and reaching the limits of civilization. At a time when global warming is growing globally and the leading cause of fine dust and environmental pollution is being attributed to the use of artificial materials such as plastics and concrete, we need wisdom to look back on the past or the original, essence to find sustainable living, sustainable value.

        현대 사회에 영향을 미치는 건축의 지속 가능성에 대한 연구 -프랭크 로이드 라이트의 사례를 중심으로-

        (연구 배경 및 목적) 현대 사회에서 건축이 소통 문제를 해결할 가능성을 탐구하는 본 연구는 포스트 코로나 시대의 비대면 활동 증가와 소통의 부재, 확증편향으로 인한 혐오의 문제를 해결하기 위한 건축적 접근을 분석한다. 특히, 프랭크 로이드 라이트의 건축 철학을 중심으로, 자연과의 조화, 유기적 공간 구성, 사회적 연결성을 강화하는 건축적 요소들이 현대 건축물에 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지를 평가한다. 연구는 라이트의 철학과 유사한 특성이 있는 국내 건축물들을 선정하고, 이들의 디자인 요소와 기능이 현대 사회의 소통 문제와 개인의 확증편향 등에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 이를 통해 건축물들이 사회적 연결성을 강화하고 지속 가능성을 유지하는 방법을 제시하며, 현대 건축이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시한다. (연구 방법) 본 연구는 프랭크 로이드 라이트의 건축 철학과 유사한 특성을 지닌 한국 건축물들을 대상으로 한다. 이를 위한 선정 기준을 설정하고, 건축물의 디자인 요소, 구조, 및 건축가의 철학을 평가한다. 선정된 건축물들에 대한 시각적 자료와 문헌 연구를 통해, 이들이 현대 사회의 소통 문제 등에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 이를 바탕으로, 건축물들이 사회적 연결성을 강화하고 소통을 촉진하는 방법을 제시한다. (결과) 본 연구는 프랭크 로이드 라이트의 건축 철학이 현대 사회의 소통 단절 및 개인주의 문제를 해결하는 방법을 분석하였다. 그의 접근 방식은 공동체 의식 강화와 사회적 상호작용 촉진에 중요한 기여를 할 수 있음을 밝혔다. 한국 내 현대 건축물 사례 분석을 통해 라이트의 건축 철학이 현대 도심과 주거 환경에서 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지를 확인하였다. 또한, 그의 건축이 공간의 질을 개선하고 사회적 연결성을 강화하는 방법을 제시함으로써 지속 가능한 도시 환경을 위한 실질적인 대안을 제공한다는 점을 확인하였다. (Background and Purpose) This study explores how architecture can address communication issues in modern society, especially in the post-COVID-19 era, which is characterized by increased remote activities and a lack of communication, as well as issues of hatred stemming from confirmation bias. Focusing on Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural philosophy, this study evaluates how elements that promote harmony with nature, organic spatial composition, and social connectivity can be applied to contemporary architecture. This study selects domestic buildings with characteristics similar to Wright’s philosophy, thus analyzing how their design elements and functions impact communication issues and individual confirmation biases. The primary aim is to present ways in which buildings can enhance social connectivity and maintain sustainability, thereby offering a direction for the future of contemporary architecture. (Method) This study focuses on Korean buildings exhibiting characteristics similar to Wright’s architectural philosophy. The criteria for selection were established, and the design elements, structures, and philosophies of the architects were evaluated. Through visual materials and a literature review of the selected buildings, this study analyzes their impact on modern social communication issues. Accordingly, it suggests methods for buildings to enhance their social connectivity and facilitate communication. (Results) The findings analyze how Wright’s architectural philosophy addresses issues of communication breakdown and individualism in modern society. His approach was found to significantly contribute to strengthening community spirit and promoting social interaction. By analyzing contemporary Korean architectural examples, the results confirm how Wright’s philosophy can be applied to modern urban and residential environments. the results also demonstrate that his architecture improves spatial quality and strengthens social connectivity, providing practical alternatives for sustainable urban environments. (Conclusion) Wright’s architectural philosophy emphasizes harmony with nature and organic architecture, which significantly influences contemporary architecture. Furthermore, this philosophy offers essential insights for addressing communication breakdowns and the decline of community spirit in the post-COVID-19 era. By analyzing domestic buildings with similar philosophies, this study confirmed the feasibility of nature-friendly architecture in urban environments. Such architecture contributes to emotional well-being, promotes social interaction, and helps restore the community spirit. Nature-friendly architecture enhances energy efficiency, improves the quality of life, and minimizes the environmental footprint. Wright’s philosophy provides crucial insights for solving modern communication issues and realizing sustainable architecture. Architects can create spaces in which people and nature coexist, enhancing community spirit and social connectivity. Recognizing that Wright’s philosophy is not a universal solution to all modern issues, comparative studies using other theoretical models are necessary. Future studies should develop nature-friendly architectures for urban redevelopment projects, smart city integration, and public and residential space designs to achieve sustainable urban environments.

        지역주의 건축의 현대적 해석과 지속가능성 연구

        Since the late 20th century, global awareness of environmental crisis have presented new ecological ideas from various disciplines including architecture, and we have made efforts to fulfill the conflicting values of sustainable development and overcoming the ecological crisis which are difficult to co-exist. ‘Sustainability’ is a systematic and comprehensive notion involved in the continuity of environmental, economical, and social aspects of human society. Current issues of ’Sustainability’ seek only the technical basis values and focused only on the energy reduction. ‘Sustainable architecture’ is distinguished to limited meanings of ‘environmentally friendly architecture’, ‘eco-friendly architecture’, or ‘green architecture’. Sustainable architecture involves a combination of values : aesthetic, environmental, social, political, and moral. It’s about using one’s imagination and technical knowledge to engage in central aspect of the practice - designing and building in harmony with our environment.1) The international standards of modernism have severed relationships between traditional or vernacular and contemporary architecture. It also caused extinction of traditional culture and its eco-technics. This thesis researches new regionalism of contemporary architecture which is based on vernacular architecture however, seeking the casual relationships between vernacular and contemporary architecture based on vernacular architecture.

        친환경건축 세부상세도 개발방향에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this study is to apply component technologies and systems of sustainable architecture to building designs, by establishing a foundation of integrated design for sustainable building with developing the detail drawings. This paper firstly establishes the development directions of detail drawings for sustainable architecture after analyzing existing classification systems and compositions of standard detail drawings and detail drawings for sustainable architecture. Secondly, Classification systems of detail drawings for sustainable architecture should be proposed as a hybrid system consisting of hierarchical systems for categories of detail drawings by location parts, insulation location(external/intermediate/internal), materials and construction methods, regional standards, and parallel systems for categories of detail drawings by jointed parts. Thirdly, Compositions of detail drawings for sustainable architecture should be proposed as comparison of functions, basic material composition according to the legal minimum standards of the heat transmission coefficient, suggestions for the thermal performance of excellent grade level of green building certification system, alternatives for the reduction of environmental impacts, check list for selections of detail drawings or alternatives, environmental impact analysis, charts related to waste, and summarized specifications for sustainable architecture. Finally, it proposes the development process and management system of detail drawings for sustainable architecture.

This study focuses on the sustainability of architectural reconstruction from the viewpoint of the city and reinterprets the urban architecture based on the organic interaction of human and environment centered on Lewis Mumford's ecology theory. which is manifested in the continuity of local cultural elements and time represented by urban architecture in the ecological cyclic relationship between human, architecture, and environment, is presented as a major topic. It had examined the theory of Tectonic by Kenneth Frampton to examine the uniqueness of the place expressed in a regenerative way with a focus on the continuity of urban architecture. And Peter ZumThor's ecological architectural reconstruction is intended to analyze the spatial characteristics of tactile techniques created by the combination of local cultural elements and natural elements. The fusion of time and space in ecological architecture regeneration forms not only collective common visualized phenomena but also creative imaginative images by the symbolism of culture. The construction of an ecological regeneration space should be planned centering on the fusion relationship of harmony or exchange between human and nature, and should be a place to exchange human emotional values. Such architectural regeneration will preserve the uniqueness of local culture and generate new value of re-creating space by accepting different kinds of cultures from outside.

        현대 흙건축의 버나큘러 특성에 관한 연구

        Vernacular perspectives had been ignored in the movement of modern architecture. This study's purpose was to review vernacular perspectives and to identify vernacular characteristics of earth architecture. Six representative contemporary earth architects were selected, and then their works were analyzed. Themes of vernacular architecture based of Frampton's critical regionalism were emerged. Findings were as following: 1) constructed by considering the local climate and the region's natural characteristics, 2) constructed with local materials seeking integration of structure and finishing work, 3) having tectonic form included regional characteristics, 4) creating space of various senses and expression of texture through earth modeling, 5) presenting homogeneity of sense of place between site and architecture, and 6) pursuing ecological and sustainable architecture. These characteristics of contemporary earth architecture reflect the vernacular architecture inherited continually in architectural history. Therefore, contemporary earth architecture has been in line with contemporary architecture aiming for sustainability.

        업무용 친환경건축물 인증기준의 개선방향에 관한 연구

        The objective of this study is to propose the direction of revision for Green Building Certification Criteria(GBCC) on office building with comparison analysis to LEED(USA) and BREEAM(UK). Korean GBCC has been developed for both residential and non-residential building, and GBCC for office building has been becoming a reference for other non-residential building. In this paper, Korean GBCC for office building was reviewed to find out current problems, and compared to foreign certifications to propose improving points for sustainable architecture with reliability. Before compared with LEED and BREEAM, the definition and the design methodology of sustainable building were reviewed and objectives and practical contents of GBCC were figured out Korean and foreign certification criteria have been analyzed as TBL. The result shows that item number and flexibility of GBCC were not sufficient to become a guideline for architects. Korean and foreign certification was focussing on environmental sustainable matter. Social sustainable matter were not widely considered and mainly focussed on improvement on interior environment. Consequently, new contents on social aspects were required in to current GBCC for sustainable architecture. Many of Korean architects were putting effort on achieve green building certification to accomplish sustainable architecture. GBCC could be a role as guideline well as certification criteria. More contents on social aspects, detailed certification standard, and flexible items are needed for better system on sustainable architecture.
