Vol.- No.-

This study attempted to unveil the positive effects of sleep duration on youth. Specifically, the goal was to figure out what effects adolescents’ sleep duration would have on body mass index (BMI), learning habit control and satisfaction with school grades and life. First, to examine relationship between sleep duration and BMI, 4th and 7th grade panels were chosen, and panel fixed-effects (within) IV regression model was applied. Second, the 4th grade panel was used to examine sleep duration-learning habit control, sleep duration-school grade satisfaction and sleep duration-life satisfaction relationships, using the autoregressive cross-lagged model. In addition, the mediating effects were assessed. Then, the results found the followings: First, adolescents’ sleep duration had a significant effect on BMI. In particular, as sleep duration increased, BMI fell. Decrease in BMI can be understood as the reduction of the probability of being overweight or obese. In other words, as they sufficiently sleep, the occurrence of obesity declines. Second, adolescents’ sleep duration had a positive influence on their control on learning habits with statistical significance. This finding was confirmed during the 5-7th years (8th-10th grade) in the 4th grade panel. Third, sleep duration had a positive effect on adolescents’ satisfaction with their school grades with statistical significance. This result was confirmed during the 2-4th and 4-7th years in the 4th grade panel with statistical significance. Fourth, adolescents’ sleep duration had a positive influence on their life satisfaction with statistical significance, which was confirmed during the 4-7th years in the 4th grade panel. Fifth, their sleep duration had a significant influence (5-7th years) on their school grades with their control on learning habits as a mediator. Furthermore, sleep duration had an effect (5-7th years) on their life satisfaction based on their learning habit control with statistical significance. In sum, adolescents’ sleep duration has a significant influence on their physical conditions, school grades and even their mental health. Based on these results, this study describes its academic and theoretical meaning and proposes the policies which can guarantee adolescents’ sleep duration. For this, the policies which can be implemented at home and school as well as in the country are stated in detail, using nudge theory (smooth intervention, encouraging others to make a choice). This study also mentioned the parts in which legal amendment is needed.

Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Body Mass Index, Household Income According to Sleep Duration: Findings From a Community Health Survey

        Lee Jihyung,Um Yoo Hyun,Jeong Jong-Hyun,Seo Ho-Jun,Kim Young-Chan,Yoon Sung Hoon,김석영,Kim Tae Won,Hong Seung-Chul 대한수면학회 2023 sleep medicine research Vol.14 No.1

Background and Objective Research on the relationship between sleep duration and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), body mass index (BMI), and income in South Korea was scarce. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep duration and the PHQ-9, BMI, and household income. Methods We used data from the Korean Community Health Survey (KCHS) conducted by the Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2018 which included a total of 228340 participants from across the country. We divided the participants into four groups based on their sleep duration and used one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to compare the mean values of PHQ-9, BMI, and household income among the groups. Results A total of 227899 respondents were included in the study. Based on a one-way ANOVA, the mean PHQ-9 score tended to increase as sleep duration decreased. However, the group with a sleep duration of 9 hours or more had an exceptionally higher mean PHQ-9 score than the group with a sleep duration of 7 to 9 hours. The BMI score generally decreased as the sleep duration increased. Additionally, the group with a sleep duration of 5 to 7 hours and 7 to 9 hours had higher household income than the group with a sleep duration of 5 hours or less or 9 hours or more. Conclusions This study demonstrated the association between sleep duration and PHQ-9, BMI, and household income. Sleep duration was found to be a factor influencing PHQ-9, BMI, and household income.

Vol.9 No.4

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of sleep duration on stress and depression in college students. The results obtained will be used as a foundational framework for fostering a healthy sleep culture among college students and for formulating measures to improve the quality of their sleep. Ultimately, we intend to produce a publicity and educational material. Methods : For this study, a survey involving 100 college students was conducted, after which data based on a final total of 95 respondents were analyzed. The information on stress and depression were first analyzed in terms of general characteristics and then organized based on the data collected to investigate the effects of sleep duration on stress and depression. The participants were divided into the following groups: “less than 6 hours,” “6 to 7 hours,” and “7 to 8 hours.” BEPSI-K (Brief encounter psychosocial instrument-Korean) was used for stress evaluation, while K-CESD-R (Korean version of center for epidemiologic studies depression scale-revised) was utilized for depression evaluation. Results : First, according to sleep duration, the BEPSI-K scores showed a statistically significant difference in each group (p<.01). In the post-hoc test, there was a difference among the “less than 6 hours” group, the “7 to 8 hours” group. A statistically significant difference was noted (p<.01). In addition, sleep duration had a statistically significant effect on the negative (-) direction of the BEPSI-K (p<.01). Second, the K-CESD-R score according to sleep duration showed a statistically significant difference in each group (p<.01). Notably, in the post-hoc test, the “less than 6 hours” group differed from the “6 to 7 hours” group, “7 to 8 hours” group. A statistically significant difference was noted (p<.01). In addition, sleep duration had a statistically significant effect on the negative (-) direction of the K-CESD-R (p<.01). Third, for the correlation between sleep duration and stress and depression, a negative (-) correlation was found between sleep duration and BEPSI-K and K-CESD-R. Meanwhile, a positive (+) correlation was found between BEPSI-K and K-CESD-R. Conclusion : Based on the findings of this study, the sleep duration of college students has an effect on stress and depression. The results of this study can be used as a foundational framework in formulating a plan for improving the quality of sleep of college students.

2021 Korean Journal of Family Practice Vol.11 No.3

Background: In an aged society, studies on sleep duration and hand grip strength are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of sleep duration and hand grip strength among a large sample of Korean older adults. Methods: This study is based on data from 2014–2015 from the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The total number of participants who were over the age of 65 years was 2,104. Participants were classified into four groups according to self-reported sleep duration. Muscle power was estimated using hand grip strength. The association between sleep duration and hand grip strength was analyzed using ANOVA and ANCOVA. Results: There was a statistically significant correlation between sleep duration and hand grip strength; After controlling for covariates, a sleep duration of shorter than 4 hours (estimated mean [95% confidence interval, CI]: 25.91±0.44) was associated with a weaker dominant hand grip strength than an average sleep duration of 7–8 hours (estimated mean [95% CI]: 27.20±0.25) (P=0.027). However, when stratified by sex, only female with a sleep duration of longer than 9 hours (estimated mean [95% CI]: 18.88±0.41) had a significantly weaker non-dominant hand grip strength than those with an average sleep duration of 7–8 hours (estimated mean [95% CI]: 19.85±0.24). Conclusion: An inappropriate sleep duration in older adults was associated with a lower hand grip strength. This finding suggests that decreased muscle power may mediate the relationship between short sleep duration and adverse health outcomes.

        김은영(Eun Young Kim),최윤선(Youn Seon Choi),김선미(Seon Mee Kim),최선영(Sun Young Choi),김은혜(Eun Hye Kim),김정은(Jung Eun Kim),김이연(E Yeon Kim),정재훈(Jae Hoon Jeong),진로사(Rosa Jin),정상아(Sang Ah Jung) 대한임상노인의학회 2014 대한임상노인의학회지 Vol.15 No.1

Background: Despite the large number of epidemiological studies linking obesity and short sleep duration, there is paucity of data carefully examining the relationship between body composition and sleep duration. So, through national undertaking Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES), we examined the relationship between sleep duration and BMI, waist circumference, and percent body fat in Korean adults. Methods: From the data of KNHANES in the year of 2008∼2010, over 19 years old 4337 men and 5543 women, relationship between sleep duration and indices of body composition was examined. Anthropometric and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measures of body composition were used. Sleep duration was measured using information obtained from self-reported questionnaires. Results: The study results revealed a negative association between sleep duration and most of body composition variables - body mass index, waist circumference, truncal fat percentage, muscle mass - and positive association with truncal lean mass percentage. In men, increasing sleep duration 1 hour, prevalence of obesity (BMI≥25 kg/㎡) is decreasing (OR=0.89, CI:0.837-0.939), risk of waist circumference over 90 cm is decreasing (OR=0.90, CI:0.851-0.966), truncal fat percentage (OR=0.93, CI:0.869-0.992) and muscle mass (OR=0.89, CI: 0.835-0.949) are also decreasing. Conclusion: Our results are consistent with previous findings that sleep duration is associated with obesity. However, the relationship between sleep duration and body composition may be stronger in men than in women. Short sleep duration was associated with increased truncal fat. And it supports that short sleep duration may increase prevalence of central obesity in Korean men.

Vol.2019 No.2

This study empirically examined the various measures of sleep for human resources and organization research with the sample of 237 day-shift and night-shift undergraduate students in the Hansung University. The data was gathered during two semesters. In each semester, respondents answers two questionnaires with an 1-month interval. Although the PSQI had been developed and selected on clinical grounds of medical doctors in the University of Pittsburgh, the Cronbach’s α of PSQI 7 dimensions from the data was the low level around 0.5, and the number of factor and the factor structure extracted from the data were inconsistent and unstable. They were also different from the results of prior studies, such as Guo et al.(2016), Sohn et al.(2012), and Buysse et al.(1989). Prior studies of this area had been adopted various measures of sleep duration and sleep quality. The measures of sleep duration include the PSQI sleep duration, the PSD sleep duration, and the subjective sleep duration. The measures of sleep quality include the subjective sleep quality, the insomnia scale, and the PSQI qualitative dimension. The PSQI qualitative dimension was not preferred for it had no clinical grounds and an inconsistent factor structure from the data. The subjective sleep duration was not preferred for the answers of respondents might be affected by their sleep quality. This study suggests a combination of the PSQI sleep duration or the PSD sleep duration, and the subjective sleep quality or the insomnia scale as good measures of sleep. Furthermore, the best measures of sleep might be the PSD sleep duration and the insomnia scale, because the PSD sleep duration explained the ego depletion on the regression models better than the PSQI sleep duration did, and the subjective sleep quality had only one item impossible to analyze the reliability and validity of the measure.

        박윤현(Pack, Yun Hyun),박지은(Park, Ji Eun),김대웅(Kim, Daewoong),서지연(Sheo, Jiyeon),최나야(Choi, Na Ya) 한국열린유아교육학회 2019 열린유아교육연구 Vol.24 No.3

The purpose of this study is to investigate the pattern of change in children’s sleep duration along with the structural relationship among electronic media usage time of four-year-olds, sleep duration and third-grader’s peer attachment. For this purpose, 6th year, 7th year, 8th year, 9th year, and 10th year data of the Korean Children and Youth Survey were used to examine whether children’s sleep duration changes in a nonlinear pattern and the suitability of structural equation model. Subjects include 1435 children. Results reveal several conclusions. First, average sleep duration of four-year- olds per day was 9.9 hours and sleep duration decreased with age. Second, electronic media usage time of four-year-olds had a significant effect on initial sleep duration and secondary changes in sleep duration. As electronic media usage time increased, the average sleep duration per day decreased and the ratio of decrease in sleep duration was greater with age. Third, both linear strain changes and secondary changes in sleep duration had a significant effect on third-grader’s peer attachment. Children with longer sleep duration formed better peer attachment. Overall findings suggest that nonsocial factors such as sleep duration can affect children’s peer attachment and hence, diverse aspects of children’s lifestyle are to be considered for their healthy socio-emotional development.

The Effect of Sleep Duration on the Risk of Unintentional Injury in Korean Adults

2014 Journal of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Vol.47 No.3

Objectives: The decrease or increase in sleep duration has recently been recognized as a risk factor for several diseases, including hypertension and obesity. Many studies have explored the relationship of decreased sleep durations and injuries, but few have examined the relationship between increased sleep duration and injury. The objective of this research is to identify the risk for injury associated with both decreased and increased sleep durations. Methods: Data from the 2010 Community Health Survey were used in this study. We conducted logistic regression with average sleep duration as the independent variable, injury as a dependent variable, and controlling for age, sex, occupation, education, region (cities and provinces), smoking, alcohol use, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and depression. Seven categories of sleep duration were established: ≤4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and ≥10 hours. Results: Using 7 hours of sleep as the reference, the adjusted injury risk (odds ratio) for those sleeping a total of ≤4 h/d was 1.53; 1.28 for 5 hours, for 1.11 for 6 hours, 0.98 for 8 hours, 1.12 for 9 hours, and 1.48 for ≥10 hours. The difference in risk was statistically significant for each category except for the 8 and 9 hours. In this study, risk increased as the sleep duration decreased or increased, except for the 8 and 9 hours. Conclusions: This research found that either a decrease or increase in sleep duration was associated with an increased risk for injury. The concept of proper sleep duration can be evaluated by its associated injury risk.

Factors related with quality on sleep of daytime workers

        Bu-il Kim,Seong-yong Yoon,Jin-seok Kim,Kuck-Hyeun Woo,Seong-yong Cho,Ho Lee,Jong-min An 대한직업환경의학회 2018 대한직업환경의학회지 Vol.30 No.-

Background: This study was conducted to identify the sleep status of daytime workers who do not work in shifts. This study analyzed factors affecting sleep duration and sleep quality. Methods: This study was conducted on 1171 daytime workers at a manufacturing workshop. We used a selfadministered questionnaire to investigate demographic variables, work type, working period, musculoskeletal symptoms and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to assess sleep. Regular health checkup was conducted for the worker’s clinical examination. Results: The mean sleep duration was 6.36 h and the mean score on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was 4.46. Work type and obesity were related to sleep duration. Age, obesity and musculoskeletal pain were significantly related to sleep quality. The prevalence ratio of researcher group for short sleep duration was 1.27 (95% confidence interval: 1.02–1.58). The prevalence ratio of those aged 50 years and over was 0.47 (0.25–0.91) and of those in their 40s was 0.56 (0.35–0.91) for poor sleep quality compared to those in their 20s. The prevalence ratio of the obesity group for poor sleep quality was 1.53 (1.10–2.12). The prevalence ratio of musculoskeletal pain group for poor sleep quality was 1.92 (1.29–2.84). Conclusions: Age, obesity and musculoskeletal pain were factors affecting the poor quality on sleep of daytime workers. In addition, work type related to short sleep duration.

Associations between Self-Reported Sleep Quality and Duration and Dietary Consumptions, Psychological Symptoms, and Obesity in Korean Adults

2017 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.22 No.4

Sleep pattern disruptions have been reported to be associated with an increased risk of obesity. This study was performed to investigate the association between sleep quality and sleep duration with dietary consumption, psychological factors, and obesity in Korean adults. A total of 288 Korean men and women who visited a public health center were included in this study. Data on general characteristics, health-related habits, psychological symptoms, dietary intake, and sleep patterns (including quality and duration) were collected using self-report questionnaires. Approximately half of the included Korean adults experienced sleep of low quality and short duration. Subjects who reported short sleep durations had a significantly higher weight (P=0.015), body mass index (P<0.001), and prevalence of obesity (P=0.012) than those reporting proper sleep durations. After adjustment for covariates, subjects reporting short sleep durations consumed more dietary carbohydrates (P=0.043) and higher levels of perceived stress (P=0.001), depression (P=0.001), and anxiety (P<0.001) than subjects reporting proper sleep durations. However, obesity-related variables, dietary intake and psychosocial symptoms did not differ significantly by reported sleep quality. The results of this study demonstrated that sleep duration but not sleep quality was associated with dietary macronutrient intake and psychological symptoms, which might affect obesity.
