      • A PSYCHOPHYSICAL STUDY ON WEIGHT SENSITIVITY BY THE FOOT AND HAND

        The weight of shoes may serve as a determining factor of perceived comfort and feel to the consumer in their purchase and repurchase decisions of footwear. People, however, seem to have trouble in accurately judging the feeling of weight of shoes on their feet. This paper made a psychophysical study of subjects′ sensitivity to weight on their feet and in their hands. The experiment consisted of 3 tests according to the motions people make when they evaluate the feel of shoes: 1) vertical lifting of a shoe on the foot (hefting in on the foot) 2) swing the shod foot back and forth; 3) holding and lifting a shoe by hand (hefting it in the hand). The method of constant stimuli and magnitude estimation were used for the experiment with 20 subjects. Weber′s ratios and the power law exponents obtained for each of the three tests were 0.156 and 0.713, 0.108 and 0.970, and 0.065 and 1.249, respectively in the same order of the previously listed tests.

        발달성 협응력 장애인의 운동감각에 대한 심리물리학적 분석

        Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and controls matched on age were tested on a linear positioning aiming task to determine the physical stimulus-psychological response relationship in kinesthenic processing. Specifically, this investigation attempted to quantify the ability and to discover a possible explanation for perceptual continua in psychophysics of kinesthesis which have been described by a prothetic or metathetic continuum. Twelve right-handed elementary school-aged students and 12 right-handed matched students with DCD were required to make distinctions of location movements. They moved their right arm to three criterion locations on a linear positioning device while blindfolded. Seven standard comparison combinations were presented randomly over 20 blocks equaling a total of 140 trials for location movements. The method of constant stimuli was utilized to determine the point of subjective equality, just noticeable difference, constant error, and Weber ratio. The results were discussed in terms of the theoretical constructs as well as the effects of DCD on kinesthetic processing.

        CRT 모니터의 감성품질 정량화를 위한 심물리학적 접근: White Uniformity 품질 평가

        White uniformity is one of the important inspection factors determining the image quality of CRT screen. In the full white pattern, white uniformity means the degree of uniform distribution of white color across the whole screen. To elicit the sensitivity factors affecting the decision of the white uniformity quality, experiments in which participants were confronted with 6 evaluation points embedded in 3 measurement groups on a CRT screen were conducted to gather the psychophysical data that are the level of white uniformity subjects perceived and CA100 produced. These data were used to develop a modified CIE1976 equation for calculating white uniformity. Performance comparison between the original CIE1976 equation and the modified equation was conducted in terms of accuracy test and magnitude estimation. It was concluded the modified equation is more sensitive in the change of white uniformity, compared to the original CIE1976 equation.

        노화가 운동감각의 변별력에 미치는 영향 : 과제 목적의 작용 The Influence of Task Goals

        The purpose of this study was to describe possible age-related differences in the physical stimulus-psychological response relationship in kinesthetic processing. Specifically, this investigation attempted to quantify the ability and to discover a possible explanation for perceptual continua in psychophysics of kinesthesis which have been described by a prothetic or metathetic continuum. This study consisted of two experiments in which the subjects were required to make distinctions of location and extent movements. Twenty-four right-handed college-aged students and 24 right-handed healthy older adults moved their right arm to three criterion locations and extents on a linear positioning device while blindfolded. Seven standard comparison combinations were presented randomly over 20 blocks equalling a total of 140 trials for location and extent movements, respectively. The method of constant stimuli was utilized to determine the point of subjective equality, just noticeable difference, constant error, and Weber ratio. The results were discussed in terms of the theoretical constructs as well as the effects of aging. The failure to find differences between the age groups suggested that age-related declines cannot be generalized to all perceptual systems and that location and extent movements can best be described by a metathetic continuum.

        저 채도 색 자극의 색상을 조사하기 위한 정신물리학 실험 방법 제안

        The psychophysical experimental methods were investigated to find an effective method for measuring color perception for low chroma color. Hue of the display stimuli was measured by two psychophysical experiments. One is the forced-choice experiment. The participants classified the hue of the stimulus as either yellow or blue and red or green. The proportion from the repeated responses was plotted on the chromaticity diagram with two hue axis. The angle from the positive x-axis to the point induced from the hue proportion represents the hue angle. The hue angle was converted to the 400-hue quadrature scale to express the hue as the percentage of two neighboring unique hues. The other experimental method is the magnitude estimation. The participants judged the hue of the stimulus as a number. As the result, the participants evaluated the color of the stimulus easily with the forced-choice method. In addition, the standard deviation between participants was small in the forced-choice experiment. It means that the forced-choice method is reliable. Therefore, this study expects to use the forced choice method to measure hue of low chroma color.

        밝기 척도를 위한 정신물리학 실험 방법 비교: 크기 추정법과 크기 생성법

        The psychophysical experimental methods affect the observer’s evaluation because of the bias error. Therefore, it is necessary to design experiments properly. In this study, the experimental methods were compared for the brightness scale experiment, and the effect of stimuli setting was investigated. Magnitude estimation and magnitude production were used for comparison. There were three brightness scale experiments which have different stimuli settings. Each experiment had two phases. The magnitude estimation and magnitude production were conducted in each phase. The neutral patches were used for stimuli. In magnitude estimation, observers evaluated the brightness of test stimuli by number compared with reference. Magnitude production is the inverse of magnitude estimation. Observer was provided with a number representing the magnitude of a stimulus and adjusted the luminance of the stimulus to produce corresponding brightness with given number. As an overall result, there are large differences between magnitude estimation and magnitude production. As the luminance of test stimulus increases or decreases compared to reference stimulus, the difference between results of two methods is increased. The range of test stimuli and the number of stimuli also affect the result. As the range of test stimuli became wider and the number of test stimuli increased, the effect of the experimental method decreases in a mid-range. Therefore, to reduce the bias according to the psychophysical experimental method, it is necessary to set a wide stimulus range and the number of stimuli properly when conducting a brightness scale experiment.

        Analytical and Psychophysical Comparison of Bilateral Teleoperators for Enhanced Perceptual Performance

        <P>This paper focuses on the human perception capabilities for haptic interaction with remote environments. The perception capabilities are compared for two well-known control methods with two kinds of haptic cues. Analytical and psychophysical methods are used to analyze the performance. The first control method aims at maximizing the transparency of the remote interactions (i.e., transparency-based method), whereas the second one aims at maximizing the detection and discrimination abilities of the human operator (i.e., perception-based method). For each of these two control methods, two kinds of haptic cues are studied, which use position and force cues from remote environments. Hybrid matrix formulation is employed, and it is analyzed in the frequency domain for these studies. Psychophysical experiments are then conducted for human-centered evaluation and comparison of the control methods. Analytical and experimental results clearly show that the perception-based method, when compared with the transparency-based method, enhances the human operator's perceptual capabilities of remote environments irrespective of force cues. For each of the two control methods, the force cues always contribute more to the increase in perceptual sensitivity when compared with the case of position cues.</P>

        로더러의 『음악 물리학 및 음악 심리 물리학』의 서사 분석

        이 논문은 저명한 음악 과학 교재인 로더러의 음악 물리학과 심리 물리학의 수사 비평을 위해서사 분석을 수행한다. 비서사적 장르의 텍스트에 대해서도 묵시적 서사에 대한 분석이 가능하다. 과학 교재에서는 구조적, 교육적, 연구적 맥락에서 묵시적 서사를 분석할 수 있다. 로더러의 교재는구조적 맥락에서 소리의 발생, 전달, 수용의 단계를 따라 음고, 음량, 음색, 협화, 화음의 인지를 다루는방식으로 책을 구성하여 구조적 일관성을 충족시킨다. 교육적 맥락에서는 학생들이 음악에 대한 과학적이해를 위해 관심을 가질 수 있는 내용으로 책을 구성하여 재료적 일관성을 충족하고 과학적 지식구축 방법을 따라 경험 데이터와 개선된 관찰 장비를 통한 신뢰할 만한 지식의 추구를 통해 서사적충실성의 타당성을 충족한다. 연구적 맥락에서는 4판에 걸쳐 지식의 최신화를 통해 서사적 충실성의진실성을 충족하고, 주요 연구자들의 활약을 통해 음악 과학의 지식이 구축되어 가는 것을 잘 드러냄으로써 성격적 일관성을 확보하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. This paper conducts narrative analysis for the rhetorical critique of Roederer's The Physics and Psychophysics of Music,a prominent textbook of music science. It is possible to analyze implicit narratives even for texts in non-narrative genres. In science textbooks, implicit narratives can be analyzed in structural, educational, and research contexts. Roederer's satisfiesstructural coherence by composing a book in a way that deals with the perception of pitch, volume, timbre, and harmonyaccording to the stages of sound generation, transmission, and acceptance in a structural context. In an educational context,a book is composed of content that students may be interested in for a scientific understanding of music to satisfy materialcoherence, and the validity of narrative fidelity is satisfied through the pursuit of reliable knowledge through experiencedata and improved observational equipment according to the method of constructing scientific knowledge. From the researchcontext, we can confirmed that characterological coherence is secured by satisfying the truthfulness of narrative fidelity throughthe update of knowledge throughout the four editions, and by revealing that the knowledge of music science is being builtthrough the activities of major researchers.

      • 프렌치 도어 냉장실 손잡이 높이의 적정 범위 결정

        The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the recessed handle height and stature on the joint flexion angle, joint flexion moment, muscle activity of the upper extremities and low back, satisfaction, and preferred range of handle height during user’s door opening task of the French door refrigerator. The repeated-measures laboratory study was conducted with 28 participants. The results showed that joint angle, joint moment, and muscle activity were significantly decreased, and satisfaction was increased as the handle height increased. The middle stature group showed lower muscle activity of the wrist compared to short and tall stature groups. Based on the psychophysics, tall stature group had approximately 3 times greater range of preferred handle height than short stature group. Considering biomechanics and psychophysics, the recommendable range of the recessed handle height was 800mm~860mm. These results can be useful to design and improve the handles of the refrigerators.
