In Perfect Harmony – How Music Leads Us Towards the Highest Good

2021 Journal of Humanities Therapy Vol.12 No.2

In the Western world today, music is thought of more as an entertainment than as a source of enlightenment. So, it might seem odd to be connecting music with enabling a person to achieve their highest psychological and moral development, which in philosophical terms is known as the highest good. And yet, since the beginning of written history, great thinkers around the world have been interested in why music is such a powerful guiding force, both for individuals and whole cultures. This article takes a closer look at the world of music in order to better understand not only how it contributes to the highest good, but also how it creates greater harmony – not only within the individual, but also between people. It relies on philosophy, psychology, spirituality, and neuroscience to make its points. Perspectives from the East, and examples of music from other cultures, will also give insight into music’s value. One of the aims of these reflections is to move the reader towards a more conscious use of music. To that end, ways in which an individual can more fully extend the musical experience in his or her life are presented. When a larger consciousness surrounds it, more people will be able to take greater advantage of all the good that music has to offer. In turn, this will make our world a better, more harmonious place to live.

Vol.28 No.-

How is musical training related to language learning? To answer this question, this paper reviews recent research on the relation of music and language competence in the field of neuroscience and cognitive science. Both music and language are processed in the common auditory pathway and the auditory pathway shaped by musical training facilitates the processing of linguistic sounds. In addition, by reviewing studies on the rhythm and reading ability, this paper explains how rhythm training improves reading skills. The possibility of a new music program converging musical rhythm and language is also discussed based on the results of scientific research on language and music.

Kognitive Musikwissenschaft: naturalisierte Erforschung musikalischen Geistes

Vol.18 No.-

Vol.30 No.2

Vol.18 No.3

This paper conducts narrative analysis for the rhetorical critique of Roederer's The Physics and Psychophysics of Music,a prominent textbook of music science. It is possible to analyze implicit narratives even for texts in non-narrative genres. In science textbooks, implicit narratives can be analyzed in structural, educational, and research contexts. Roederer's satisfiesstructural coherence by composing a book in a way that deals with the perception of pitch, volume, timbre, and harmonyaccording to the stages of sound generation, transmission, and acceptance in a structural context. In an educational context,a book is composed of content that students may be interested in for a scientific understanding of music to satisfy materialcoherence, and the validity of narrative fidelity is satisfied through the pursuit of reliable knowledge through experiencedata and improved observational equipment according to the method of constructing scientific knowledge. From the researchcontext, we can confirmed that characterological coherence is secured by satisfying the truthfulness of narrative fidelity throughthe update of knowledge throughout the four editions, and by revealing that the knowledge of music science is being builtthrough the activities of major researchers.

Vol.34 No.3

To become skilled in singing, one needs the ability to accurately perceive music and the capacity to vocalize it. Recognition of music can be distinguished by the perception of pitch and rhythm. Pitch perception is often determined by genetics and neurological differences, whereas rhythm perception is influenced more by environmental factors than genetics. Tone deafness, or amusia, can stem from difficulties in perceiving pitch or from an inability to sing despite accurate pitch perception, known specifically as “purely vocal tone deafness.” This condition involves a disconnect between perception and the act of singing. And this can also arise from problems in the memory of perceived musical notes. Tone deafness not only affects musical abilities but also impacts language processing and communication.

Vol.12 No.7

Purpose This study to aims to examine and compare the brain activity during various types of piano performance, including representation, variation, and improvisation, and analyze the factors that affect the differences of the brain activity. Methods The brain activity during the performances was measured by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) and the comparative analysis was performed with statistical models. In addition, the subject carried out a survey about flow, difficulty, self-efficacy and density which were used for multiple linear regression to examine their effect on the brain activity. Result The analysis results revealed inhibitory activity in the right middle frontal gyrus and right superior frontal gyrus during improvisation, which was influenced by subjective difficulty levels of the musical pieces and the number of notes played. Conclusion In this study, we found the relationship between the musical improvisation and deactivation of prefrontal cortex and various factors relevant to the brain activity. These findings can contribute to expanding our neuroscientific understanding of musical creativity and clarifying the potential efficacy of music therapy and education especially for diseases or disorders regarding the brain deactivation
