Vol.38 No.2

The basin characteristics reflect the attributes of geomorphological pattern of basin and stream networks affect the rainfall-runoff. In order to analyze the relationship between the basin runoff and stream morphometric characteristics, the morphometric characteristics were investigated for 27 water-level observation stations on 19 rivers in the Han River basin using Arc-map. The morphometriccharacteristics were divided into linear, areal and relief aspects for calculation while the annual mean runoff ratio as a basin responseby rainfall was estimated using the measured precipitation and discharge to analyze the rainfall-runoff characteristics. The correlation among the morphometric parameters were schematized to analyze the correlations among them. The multiple regression equation for rainfall-runoff ratio was provided with morphometric parameters of stream length ratio, form factor ratio, shape factor, stream area ratio, and relief ratio and the coefficient of determination was 0.691. The RMSE and MAPE between the measured and the estimated annual runoff rates were found as 0.09, 11.61% respectively, the suggested regression equation showed good estimation.

Morphological Differences Between Three Groups of Luciogobius guttatus on the Korean Peninsula

2016 Ocean science journal Vol.51 No.2

Three ecological and geographical forms of Luciogobius guttatus from the western and eastern coasts of the Korean Peninsula as well as the coasts of, Jeju Island which is located to the south of the peninsula are described and compared based on morphological characteristics. The environments of these three coastal areas are different, and the morphometrics show a clear pattern of differentiation and reveal the discreteness of the western, eastern and Jeju groups. In addition, a discriminant analysis (DA), a principal component analysis (PCA) of morphometric characteristics, and a t-test for meristic characteristics all show that the three populations of L. guttatus differ from each other. Three divergent lineages of L. guttatus are described with the possibility of niche differentiation between the western, eastern and Jeju coastal habitats. The standard length of eastern populations was greater than that of western and Jeju populations, and those with morphometric characteristics had a longer body. In addition, eastern populations had a higher number of vertebrae. We speculate that the characteristics of eastern populations evolved through the difference in tide level and gravel density, whereas the difference between western and Jeju populations is due to geographical distance.

Vol.24 No.1

This research was classified mountain areas with high ecological, environmental and resource value among the macro scaled terrain that can be checked at the space scale of less than 1:1,000,000 and analyzed the topographical characteristics. It has been confirmed that the mountains of the Korean peninsula belong to the groups IV, V, VI(classification by Kapos et al.(2000)) as a result of applying the quantitative standards for designation of mountain areas to the global mountain system. The area of mountains calculated using high resolution DEM is equivalent to 48% of the area of the Korean peninsula, and the result is quite different from the general idea of which 70% is the mountain area of the Korean peninsula. The mountain areas show the distribution of geomorphons, that is different from the plains and the hills and also, it shows the differences between the mountains of the groups IV ~ VI classified according to the altitude. As a result of analyzing the relations among type pattern, slope, and relief, specific geomorphons are concentrated at 10˚ and 20˚ and it shows the possibility to classify the mountainous areas into two groups based on the result that the distribution of landform patterns are bimodal in the relation to the amount of relief.

Morphometric Characteristics and Fin Dimorphism between Male and Female on the Marine Medaka, Oryzias dancena

Vol.20 No.4

Sexual dimorphism is the most conspicuous difference between the sexes. This study examines possible sexual dimorphism and the relative growth patterns of morphometric characteristics in the marine medaka, Oryzias dancena for their potential to help differentiate between males and females of this species. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated by a non-linear regression method were L∞=30.2 mm, K=3.22/year, and τ0=-0.05. All 18 characteristics measured showed a difference between males and females from 70 days after hatching. Each of these characteristics were significantly different between sexes (ANCOVA, P<0.05), and the ratio of standard length between sexes showed that males were larger than females for all five morphometric measurements. Fin length measurements were taken for 21 distances of anal fin and 7 distances of dorsal fin between landmarks. There were all differences for all dorsal fin rays between the males and the females and there is significant difference in 70 days after their hatch when the sexual dimorphism is presented. The significant difference (P<0.05) in fin ray for male and female was more greatly seen as they grow. Male marine medaka showed more rapid growth than females, with longer length, dorsal fins and anal fins. Differences in these characteristics will be useful during experiments when it is necessary to differentiate between sexes of marine medaka.

Vol.16 No.3

A closely associated set of characteristics was analysed to discriminate to species of catfish(Siluridae) in Korea. After arc sin square root transformation, 19 measurements relative to the standard length and another four measurements relative to the head length of each species of catfish were compared statistically. Classical and truss dimensions of each seven morphometric traits in the far eastern catfish, Silurus asotus, showed higher values than the of slender catfish, S. microdorsalis, respectively. Truss dimensions of three morphometric traits in slender catfish showed higher values than those of far eastern catfish. There were no significant differences between four morphometric traits in this Siluridae. The dimensions used in this study may be useful as taxonomic indicators to discriminate the species of Silurus in Korea.

Vol.21 No.12

This paper suggests a method of detecting traffic lights for vehicles by combining the HSV(hue saturation value) color model, morphometric characteristics, and location information appearing on consecutive images in daytime. In order to detect the traffic light, the color corresponding to the signal lights should be explored. It is difficult to detect traffic lights among colors of lights from buildings, taillight of cars, leaves, placards, etc. The proposed algorithm searches for the traffic lights from many candidates using morphometric characteristics and location information in consecutive images. The recognition process is divided into three steps. The first step is to detect candidates after converting RGB channel into HSV color model. The second step is to extract the boundaries between the housing of traffic lights and background by exploiting the assumption that the housing has lower brightness than the surrounding background. The last step is to recognize the signal light after eliminating the false candidates using morphometric characteristics and location information appearing on consecutive images. This paper demonstrates successful detection results of traffic lights from various images captured on the city roads.

Morphometric Characteristics of Diploid and Triploid Marine Medaka, Oryzias dancena

Vol.22 No.2

The morphometric truss characteristics and classical dimensions of the marine medaka, Oryzias dancena, that might distinguish diploid and triploid fish were examined. Significant differences in all the classical and truss dimensions of the diploid and triploid fish were observed in both sexes (p<0.01). All the dimensions of the triploid fish were greater than those of the diploid fish. The triploid marine medaka shows sexual dimorphism in these characters, and the sexual dimorphism of the triploid marine medaka is similar to that of the diploid marine medaka. Thus, when their classical dimension and truss dimension was measured, the growth of triploid marine medaka is faster than that of the diploid fish, and it displays clear sexual dimorphism, with male fish having longer dorsal and anal fins than female fish.

For identification of morphometric characteristics in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, coho salmon, O. kisutch, and their allotriploid, twenty one body traits were measured, and the ratios of each trait to fork length, length from postorbital to the origin of caudal fin and head length were calculated. The ratios of fin length to fin height in anal, dorsal and adipose fins showed significant differences among these two species and their allotriploid $(p\leq0.01)$. Allotriploid could be distinguished easily from two parents species in the ratios of length of origin of ventral fin to fork length and anal fin length to anal fin height.
