      • Factors affecting application developers' loyalty to mobile platforms

        Ryu, M.H.,Kim, J.,Kim, S. Pergamon 2014 Computers in Human Behavior Vol.40 No.-

Mobile platform providers, including Apple and Google, have grown quickly to become central players in the mobile ecosystem. They now act as gatekeepers of information among multiple niche players in the mobile ecosystem. Many players from different industry sectors have tried to build their ecosystem centered on their own mobile platform, but only a few have succeeded so far. In the so called 'ecosystem war', one of the key issues for platform providers is how to retain a sustainable relationship with other niche players in the ecosystem. This paper investigates the factors influencing application developers' loyalty to mobile platforms. To do this, this paper develops a model with key variables based on loyalty theory and adds variables that reflect the specific context of mobile platforms. The empirical analysis that was conducted in South Korea shows that satisfaction is a direct antecedent of application developers' loyalty to a mobile platform. The results also show that the quality of a mobile platform's software development kit (SDK) is one of the important determinants of application developers' satisfaction with a particular mobile platform and also of the platform's credibility. However, there is no significant relationship between the credibility and loyalty, which is not consistent with previous studies in different research settings. This provides us a clue to understand how the mobile platform market works and that mobile platform providers have less incentive to create a fair relationship with developers when they have a large customer base.

A Study on the Influence Factors of Users’ Complex Continuance Intention of Mobile Reading Platform

Vol.40 No.4

In recent years, a series of mobile reading platforms have emerged with the rapid development of digital reading. Their distinct advantages, such as extensive content, strong selectivity, rich information resources, easy access and use, and interaction, have brought users a more fresh reading style and experience. However, the unfriendly design of the mobile reading platform and many interaction dysfunction are affecting the users' continuance intention. Previous studies have often neglected the impact of user experience on users' continuance intention on mobile reading platforms. To explore the impact of mobile reading platform users' digital reading experience on their continuance intention, this study builds a mechanism model of mobile reading platform users' mobile digital reading experience on their continuance intention based on the information system continuous use model. In this study, users of mobile reading platform in China were used as the research object to carry out a questionnaire survey, and the questionnaire data were analyzed in the way of structural equation model. The results show that the digital reading experience of mobile reading platform users has a significant positive impact on expectation confirmation, perceived usefulness and user satisfaction; perceived usefulness and user satisfaction play a full mediating role between users' digital reading experience on mobile reading platforms and their intentions to continue using them. Therefore, this study is of theoretical significance to fully understand the user experience value of mobile reading platform, and has practical guiding significance for mobile reading platform designers and operation personnel to improve the mobile reading platform that is more suitable for users.

Vol.23 No.4

This study examines how mobile service platforms improve users’ platform value which in turn leads to increased satisfaction and continuance intentions of the platforms, by adopting the theoretical framework of customer value – satisfaction – loyalty. The framework has been used to explain the impacts of customers’ cognitive and emotional evaluation in predicting their behaviors. Moreover, this study attempts to extend the framework by considering the concept of user habit as a moderator on the relationships between platform value and platform satisfaction and continuance intentions. That is, this study verifies the interaction effect of repetitive, habitual factors and cognitive, affective factors on continuance intention. A total of 180 data collected on users with experience in Kakao’s various mobile service platforms was used to perform the partial least squares (PLS) analysis. The key findings are provided as follows. Firstly, our results confirm the effectiveness of the framework of platform value – satisfaction – continuance intention in the context of the use of mobile service platforms. Secondly, platform value is increased by platform synergy and platform quality as well as information disclosure risks. It is noteworthy that contrary to our expectations, information disclosure risks are also positively related to platform value, which could be interpreted as the paradox of personalization and privacy. Finally, the moderating effect of user habit on the relationships between platform value and satisfaction and continuance intention has not been verified. The discussion and implications of the results are presented.

A Convergence Study on the Influence Factors of User Experience of Mobile Medical Platform - Taking Ping An Good Doctor APP Users as an Example -

Vol.40 No.4

As an extension of existing medical services, the mobile medical platform uses mobile Internet terminals as a carrier to build a real-time, dynamic medical service platform. It shares medical resources with brick-and-mortar hospitals. And it has become a powerful tool for people to obtain and use medical health information and services. However, mobile medical APPs suffer from poor user experience and low user stickiness. Therefore, this study focuses on the factors that affect the user experience of the mobile medical platform, aiming to improve the user experience and enhance the user stickiness of the mobile medical platform. It constructs a theoretical model of the factors influencing the user experience of mobile medical platforms from a health literacy perspective. To test the hypothesized model, we conducted a questionnaire survey of 305 users about the platform usage of the mobile medical platform. At the same time, we empirically tested the constructed model using the research tools AMOS and SPSS. The results of the data analysis showed that most of the hypotheses were supported. Specifically, visual attractiveness has a significant positive effect on user experience; demand satisfaction has a significant positive effect on user experience; health information acquisition ability in the health literacy construct has a positive effect on the user experience through the full mediating effect of demand satisfaction. However, the health information evaluation and utilization ability in the health literacy construct had no significant impact on user experience. This study studied the influencing factors of user experience from the perspective of health literacy. It provides a unique perspective for future research on the user experience of mobile medical platforms and has essential theoretical contributions and practical implications for mobile medical platform operators and designers to improve their services and optimize their design.

Vol.13 No.4

Kakaotalk which is top level of mobile instant messenger in Korea has evolved from one-sided market to two-sided market as a biggest mobile service platform. The minimum necessary condition of two sided market is to have cross network externality in the platform. The platform provider commonly uses instruments of cross-subsidization to strengthen the cross network externality. Kakaotalk is the first mobile service platform progressed to two-sided market because it has not only secured cross network externality but also made full use of instruments of cross subsidization effectively. This is a exploratory case study focusing on Kakaotalk that has been evolved to two-sided market with cross network externality. This study verified the following research thesis. First, it verified a mobile service requires constant growth stage when it develops two-sided market as platform. Second, it verified if a mobile service utilizes instruments of cross-subsidization in order to enforce cross network externality which is necessary condition of the two-sided market through exploratory case study on detailed event analysis of Kakaotalk. The study on two-sided market of mobile service platform focusing on the Kakaotalk case proposes what a mobile service is to be required to evolve from one-sided market to two-sided market as constant platform. In particular, this study investigated strategic usage of instruments of cross-subsidization for securing cross network externality and how the instruments of cross-subsidization can intensify the cross network externality.

        이보경(Bokyoung Lee),심선영(Seonyoung Shim) 한국IT서비스학회 2012 한국IT서비스학회지 Vol.11 No.2

Contemporary smartphone competition is generally described as the battle between Apple's proprietary platform and Google's open platform. However, this competition is not limited within smartphone adoption itself. User's pre-adoption of one mobile platform via smarphone can be connected to the post-adoption of the same mobile platform based on the other smart devices (e.g. smart pad). In this study, we investigate whether user's preference to a certain platform is persistent over mobile ecology, from the pre-adoption of one smart device to the post-adoption of following devices. For this investigation, we adopt the dual-model as the ground theory, where post-adoption of IT product is explained by both dedication and constraint factors. The empirical testing first evidences that dual model works well as our research model for identifying the reasons of post-adoption. Next, we group our data into two parts in order to compare the switching behavior of iPhone users and Android phone users. iPhone users show much lower switching rate to Android based smart pads, while Android phone users show higher churn rate to iPad (49.3%:96.3%). Especially, satisfaction showed much stronger effect than switching cost on the continuing intention of existing platform, when the analysis is given to the iPhone user's group. From this result, we can conjecture the relatively stronger loyalty of iPhone users. More managerial implications on the mobile platform strategy are driven.

Development of a Reference Model to Analyze Value Co-Creation in Mobile Platform Business

Vol.17 No.2

A mobile platform business is characterized by a value network in which stakeholders collaborate to create value centered around a mobile platform. This value network is viewed as an ecosystem because its structure is re-organized to the dynamic, changing relationships among the stakeholders. By using the e3-value, which is an ontological modeling approach, this study proposes a reference model for examining this value architecture of mobile platform businesses. In the proposed reference model, a mobile platform business is viewed as a structure for resource exchange among actors for value co-creation. In this study, this model is further adapted to real business cases to identify how mobile platform business varies in dynamic business contexts. The results provide guidelines for the development of a business model for mobile platform business, and will be applicable to make policy strategies for establishing a collaboration network in different innovation contexts including industrial and regional innovations.

Vol.17 No.5

This paper explores the concept of mobile gaming platforms and changes in game play through mobile parameters, focusing on the role of role-playing mobile games through mobile parameters. As a move, the Player combines the mobile media with the game platform. The daily time of the mobile mid-dividualization is reconstructed with the principle of superposition, which affects play experience on the mobile gaming platform. The character of a mobile role-playing game plays a non-integrated play where the player is staying, rather than an avatar character, and exhibits a non-dwelling character as a residential space. Automatic battle also regenerates unused combat forces in the form of explicit integration. The experience of combat in overlapping hours serves as a visual spectacle, and the player inhabits the fighter jets.
