Vol.13 No.6

The preservation of historic buildings in Korea has been considered to be the responsibility of the public sector. Recently, however, due to the increasing number of buildings to be preserved as well as the diversification of historic buildings induced the private sector to take a part in the preservation activity. The purpose of this study is to seek the direction of NPO?s activity in Korea on the preservation by analyzing the cases of Historic Boston Incorporated(HBI) which has played a significant role in preserving historic buildings and activating local community by utilizing those buildings. The activity of HBI provides following implications on domestic NPO activity. First, on-going stewardship, in which the profit from selling or leasing the preserved buildings is reinvested to preserve and reuse historic buildings, needs to be brought in. Secondly, the efficiency of preserving historic building business should be improved by adopting the preservation easement. Third, the preservation and reuse of historic buildings should be connected with the regeneration, reinforcement and revitalization of communities. Fourth, regional leaders must participate in preserving and reusing historic buildings in order to maximize the effects of preservation business.

Vol.18 No.3

(Background and Purpose) Hong Kong tried to maximize the economic and socio-cultural benefits of historical buildings and proceed as a long-term urban regeneration project through the ‘Revitalizing Historical Buildings Through Partnership Scheme’ in 2008. The project aims to promote public participation in the preservation and utilization of historical buildings, with a total of 22 historical buildings designated as of June 2022, and 10 projects are in operation so far. In the case of the opened case, it is regarded as an excellent cultural regeneration case in terms of relationship with local communities and tourism resources, preserving historical buildings through partnerships with non-profit organizations. Therefore, this study aims to examine the changes in historical buildings planned by the government and non-profit organizations in Hong Kong, which faces rapid urban aging, analyzes cases activated through cultural regeneration, and examines the direction of cultural regeneration of Hong Kong historical buildings. (Method) The geographical scope of this study targets Hong Kong's historical buildings in 18 districts and will be considered as of 2008 when the ‘Revitalizing Historical Buildings Through Partnership Scheme’ was implemented. As for the spatial scope, four cases of historical buildings corresponding to Grades 1 to 3 designated by the Hong Kong Antiquities Advisory Committee were selected. The method of the study is largely three parts, and first, prior researches on cultural regeneration are conducted, and case analysis elements are summarized based on the characteristics derived through them. Second, a case analysis is conducted focusing on the current status and changes of cultural regeneration in Hong Kong, policy review, and finally, cultural regeneration characteristics. As for the data for analysis, field trips, interview materials with officials and experts, and overseas architectural websites were used. (Results) The analysis results showed excellent physical characteristics including identity and functionality. In this background, the ACBHC, a group of historical building experts, adopted and managed the proposal based on a close analysis of the size of the space to be newly changed and the space needed. Based on the physical characteristics of existing buildings, the excellence of the revitalization plan, which faithfully reflects social and cultural characteristics could be confirmed through the utilization of links with local communities and the number of visitors. (Conclusions) Until now, the revitalization of historical buildings in Hong Kong has been examined from the perspective of cultural regeneration, and as a result, the 'preservation-development type' model and the 'public-private partnership governance type' model have been integrated. This study believes that the concept of cultural regeneration and the initial case study of cultural regeneration of Hong Kong historical buildings are valuable, and hopes to be used as basic data for establishing the direction of cultural regeneration plans for domestic historical buildings.

Fire was and remains a great threat to historic buildings of wood. This threat is omnipresent and often results to irreparable property losses especially cultural heritages. Fire of historic buildings continues to increase every year. The purpose of this study is to preserve a life safety, historical heritages and architectural & cultural values by pursuing for fire safety in the historical buildings. This study shall employ a literature review and fire protection method. The literature review shall focus on the observations of characteristics noted in fire codes. A method is proposed to investigate fire codes related historical buildings, reported fire history Fire Codes and Regulations for modern buildings are not always applicable on the historic buildings. Old buildings, and some new buildings with architectural, historical or cultural importance may have values which cannot be measured on a monetary scale. Their protection against the damage caused by fire is considered to be one of the basic moral duties of society. It is strongly recommended , therefore, legislation for fire safety in historical buildings must be extended to a complementary relationship with "active" fire protection measures, to provide safety in real historical building in real fire situations. The development and application of performance based Codes and the Fire Safety Engineering approach seems to be a rather reasonable and effective way to deal with these historical buildings.

Vol.27 No.3

Fire is one of the greatest threats to historical buildings not only to the building`s occupants but also to the building`s structure and contents. The purpose of this research is to evaluate fire risk in historical buildings in Korea through a series of survey and review. In this research, a multicriteria decision-making approach involving Analytical Hierarchy Process has been designed to determine a weighted index to identify factors and quantify fire risk. Fire risk ranking systems of historical building has been developed in some applications, for example, BOCA, WISCONSIN, FSES and HFRI. According to the such derived fire risk indexing, the Human Activity index showed the highest risk, followed by Historic Buildings, Fire Safety Systems, and then Natural Environmental Causes. Comparison of these factors indicates that the derived risk values differ from case to case. It is proposed that a performance-based design approach should consider the building & occupant characteristics, locations and historical significance, resulting in a more accurate and effective evaluation of fire risk

Vol.38 No.7

This research aims to identify the present status and suggest future considerations for historic building preservation in Korea from a perspective of sustainable green remodeling. To achieve these research goals, historical reconstruction cases certified by LEED, a representative eco-friendly architecture certification program in the United States were examined. Examples of green remodeling with Korean eco-friendly architectural certification, and historically restored structures in the United States concentrating on LEED-certified projects were used. The results from the literature review showed there were relatively few examples of historical architecture preservation and sustainable remodeling in Korea; the United States cases appeared to have active links to the LEED program that served as a guideline for eco-friendly historical architecture restoration. An intensive case study targeting the Christman building, a triple-platinum LEED certified project, showed the integration of green remodeling into historic preservation. A site visit with a checklist was conducted to examine its design features driven by green remodeling of a historic building. During the site visit, a representative from the Christman Company accompanied researchers and explained their entire process for building remodeling and historic preservation; its green remodeling features were identified during the site visit and analyzed through the lens of the LEED criteria of Sustainable Site, Energy and Atmosphere, Material and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality. Finally, this study proposed future considerations for green remodeling of historic buildings. Sustainable Site, Energy and Atmosphere, Material and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality

A Cloud Model-based Knowledge Mapping Method for Historic Building Maintenance based on Building Information Modelling and Ontology

        Pin-Chan Lee,Wei Xie,Tzu-Ping Lo,Danbing Long,Xiaofei Tang 대한토목학회 2019 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.23 No.8

The maintenance of historic buildings requires a systematic approach to construct and reuse maintenance knowledge. Maintenance knowledge of historic buildings has extensive and specific knowledge, but a small number of experts provide most of experience. With the rapid development of building information modelling (BIM), it can facilitate maintenance management of historic buildings. Recently, research on connecting ontology and BIM was discussed to promote building knowledge management (BKM). However, BKM is less applied in historic buildings and connection strength is also less discussed. Connection strength of knowledge mapping can increase the performance of knowledge retrieval. Therefore, this study aims to build connection between maintenance ontology of historic buildings and BIM, and also proposes a cloud model-based knowledge mapping method to evaluate the connection strength. This study uses FMEA (failure mode and effects analysis) to connect ontology and BIM, and the grey relational analysis to evaluate the connection strength. Meanwhile, cloud model is integrated into FMEA to better deal with uncertain information to increase the reliability. This study adopts a real case to valid the practicability. The results show the proposed method can evaluate the connection strengths with uncertain information and obtain the maintenance knowledge more efficiently.
