        The Significance of the Collaborative Design Process in the Institutional Context

        Industrial design typically interacts with variousdisciplines such as engineering, business, sociology, and psychology, as well as diverse organizations ranging from local companies to government agencies. In educational environments, such collaboration can serve as an excellent pedagogical tool and a model for maintaining the relevance (and future viability) of industrial design programs in large research universities. Depending on the nature of the collaborative project and team members, however, the design solution turns out differently. For a new product development, it is significant to understand the importance of collaboration and how it can affect the final solution. In order to explore them, special attention will be devoted to case studies describing collaborative design and showing the different design considerations in which the author was involved to develop productsin the university environment. The primary purpose of this study is to demonstrate the significance of design collaboration and to discover how the design concentration can be decided in collaborative design in educational environment. The case studies are part of an ongoing relationship between bioengineering, industrial design, and mechanical engineering on a major university campus along with a local company, and will demonstratehow expertise in a wide range of disciplines is necessary when developing products. While focused on a specific project, this case study has broader implications for anyone interested in leveraging collaboration to spark new forms of education and faculty research in industrial design.

        Collaborative Design Intervention in the Traditional Chinese Handicraft Sector for Enhancing Cultural Sustainability: New Channel Social Innovation Project

        Background Rapid industrialization brought new challenges to the handicraft sector. Recently, it has been a significant concern for designers to preserve the traditional handicraft industry and to develop cultural sustainability. A culturally sustainable future is faced on how to blend traditional handicraft and contemporary social needs. This paper aims to study the status of collaborative design intervention in the traditional handicraft domain in order to investigate characteristics and potentials of the design processes, as well as to suggest the developmental tendency of Chinese handicraft on improving cultural sustainability. Methods First, to identify existing problems, literature related to the traditional Chinese handicraft was reviewed and outlined. Second, to improve cultural sustainability, three representative projects of the “New Channel Social Innovation Project” that play a prominent role in the collaborative design intervention model in the Chinese handicraft sector, were selected for comparative analysis by investigating official websites and formal documents. The characteristics of the design model were based on the results. Third, to verify the consequences, the research of the features specific to the collaborative design and the future direction were followed through a comprehensive comparison with relevant expert theory. Results The results of this study indicate the advantages of the collaborative design intervention method. Three commonalities were uncovered: strategically promote intangible cultural heritage protection; actively adopt the “rethinking and making” procedure before adjusting the design; and follow diverse “interdisciplinary methods” to find a creative solution. The findings reveal the crucial knowledge that the function, by design, in social and cultural issues is not to offer a solution unilaterally but to engage in the environment for drawing bidirectional communication with group members. By employing the comprehensive comparison with a "transition design" concept, a relevant expert theory suggests the significant ways for the transition to the culturally sustainable future. The results show that the future goal of Chinese handicraft is to achieve cultural sustainability based on locality knowledge through collaborative design. Conclusions This research allows us to have a deep understanding of the current situation of collaborative design intervention in the Chinese handicraft sector and the enthusiasm of a collaborative design intervention method for enhancing cultural sustainability. Furthermore, the study presents a critical argument of the design ways, which is the formulated strategies in interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance cultural sustainability. This study demonstrates that for improving cultural sustainability of the handicraft domain, the design processes and characteristics of collaborative design intervention in traditional handicrafts are of great significance.

        Development and experimental testing of a collaborative design rationale method for early-stage ship layout design

        Design: rationale is a promising way of capturing design decisions and considerations for later retrieval and traceability to improve collaborative design decision-making. To achieve these perceived benefits for early-stage complex ship design, this paper first elaborates on the development of a proof-of-concept design rationale method. The method aims to aid ship designers in the continuous capturing and reuse of design rationale during the collaborative concept design process. Second, the setup and results of an experiment conducted with marine design students and with experts are discussed. This experiment shows how the developed design rationale method benefits collaborative design decision-making such that it leads to improved insight into design issues across the design team during a single design session.

      • 원격공동설계 시스템 구축을 위한 에이전트 기반 접근 및 사례기반 의사충돌 해결

        Under the concept of global economy, the enterprises are assigning design and production environments around the world in different areas. A serious problem of information exchange emerges as companies use traditional hardware and very distinct softwares appropriate to their field of expertise. To overcome the decreased productivity due to the interruption of information, the concept of simultaneous engineering and concurrent design becomes very significant. In this article, an agent-based ship design system is developed in order to support a cooperation in distributed ship design environments. Above all, the conflicts that occur in the middle of knowledge sharing in the system must be resolved. An approach to do this is the case-based conflict resolution strategy formulated to resolve current conflict on the basis of previous resolved similar cases in agent-based collaborative design system environments. To do this conflict cases that occur in initial ship design stage are extracted. On the basis of the extracted cases, case-base is constructed. In addition conflict resolution handler located in the facilitator is developed to treat conflict problems effectively by reasoning of the case-base and thus presenting an appropriate solution. The validation of developed case-based conflict resolution strategy is evaluated by applying to collaborative design process in initial ship design stage, especially the machinery outfitting design, the preliminary design, the hullform design, and the structural design. Through the help of the cooperation of the design agents, the facilitator, the conflict resolution handler, and the case-based system, a designer can be supported effectively in his/her decision-making based on the previous cases resolved similarly.

        Concurrent Engineering Based Collaborative Design Under Network Environment

        Concurrent Engineering (CE) is a popular method employed in product development. It treats the whole product design process by the consideration of product quality, cost, rate of progress, and demands of customers. The development of computer and network technologies provides a strong support to the realization of CE in practice. Aiming at the characteristics of CE and network collaborative design, this paper built network collaborative design system frame. Through the analysis of the network collaborative design modes based on CE, this paper provided a novel network collaborative design integration model. This model can integrate the product design information, design process, and knowledge. Intelligent collaboration was considered in the proposed model. The study showed that the proposed model considered main factors such as information, knowledge, and design process in collaborative design. It has potential application in CE fields.

        디자인 협업에 의한 부티끄 호텔 디자인 특성에 관한 연구

        With the environmental changes of the times, consumers expect new experiences and seek hotels with various leisure facilities and sensuous design rather than existing static and conservative ones. In particular, boutique hotels connected to all the aspects of lifestyle including architecture, culture, art and fashion are trying out a variety of designs through collaborations in the ways of enhancing their brand images in the design industry. Design through collaboration between different fields has an infinite possibility of breaking from classicism and creating a new type of space in hotel design. Thus, this study attempts to analyze a few cases of boutique hotels by collaborative design that has recently been vitalized and to seek for a direction by suggesting the methods of utilizing design by collaboration for the hotel industry that will further be expanded in the future.<br/> For this purpose, first, the theories of collaboration and boutique hotel will be reviewed and the characteristics will be drawn out based on the examples of boutique hotels to which collaborations have been applied by enterprises and designers. By analyzing and classifying the cases of the domestic and foreign boutique hotels through practical experiences among the hotels recently designed by the collaborations between enterprises and designers based on the basic frame of the five characteristics drawn out: identity, symbolism, temporality, locality and interaction, objective values will be drawn out and data for presenting the future orientation will be built. In the Korean hotel industry that is gradually expanding, boutique hotel designs through the appropriate collaboration between enterprises and designers should be considered for the extensive development of the future hotel industry.

        궁서와 디와니서체 캘리그래피를 컬래버레이션한 섬유&패션 제품디자인 개발연구

        Recently, the Korean cultural wave (Hallyu) has been gaining great popularity in the Arab world and spreading rapidly. It has broken the cultural and linguistic barrier between the Koreans and Arabs through (Korean dramas, popular songs, movies, food, fashion, literature, language, etc.). Collaboration across cultures seeks to harmonize people with diverse cultures to benefit from each other and discover a new vision and concept for society. Thence, the purpose of this study is to collaborate two types of calligraphy scripts, “Korean Gungseo script” and “Arabic Diwani script” to innovate contemporary collaborative calligraphy designs for textile and fashion products. Which reflects the Korean and Arabic cultural heritage beauty while preserving the identity of each culture and displaying its calligraphy characteristics and aesthetics. The collaborative designs will provide consumers with a new experience that grape their attention to unique designs. In addition, keep pace with the modern trend in the design and implementation of textile and fashion products. Enhance opportunities to establish new markets and economic channels in fashion industry and strengthen design competitiveness. The scope of the study is first, selecting two scripts that have the same commonalities in terms of the place of use in ancient imperial palaces and calligraphy characteristics. The Korean “Gungseo” script was used in the “Korean” palace, and the Arabic “Diwani” script was used in the “Ottoman palace”. As for calligraphy characteristics, both scripts are distinguished by the curved lines. Second, two words were selected “Love and Hope” for the design concept to be implemented in the selected textile & fashion design products to suit female consumers in the age of their twenties and thirties. These words were inspired by the “king’s Sejong” policy and philosophy to improve the lives of his people through love and hope. As for the research method, the collaboration definition and types besides the history of Korean “Gungseo script” and the Arabic “Diwani script”, will be reviewed through related literature, papers, books, specialized websites, museums, and other publications domestic and foreign research. Then, designing motifs and sources will be developed by using computer graphics software Photoshop and illustrator, and simulations are conducted to produce prototypes. Analyzing the new collaborative design scripts through the four calligraphy elements such as the sensory element, the semantic element, the constitutive element, and the emotional element. Accordingly, the following conclusion could be obtained from the development of the textile and fashion design products in collaboration between “Gungseo” and “Diwani” scripts. The two calligraphy styles above have their own distinct visual language and cultural significance, and their collaboration can create a harmonious fusion of two different artistic traditions. Both calligraphy scripts have a rich tradition of flexible connection, the strokes are clear and the shape is neat, and there is a variety of thickness in which combining them can create a vibrant and dynamic visual Image. The first design suggestion with the word “Love” was designed to meet the needs of customer’s attention at the age of thirty. Women at this age are practical and effective, and warm-hearted. The second design with the word “Hope” was designed to attract customers in their twenties. People at this age are active, looking to the future, and enthusiastically promote the Korean wave culture. Finally, the newly collaborated calligraphy design is expected to open new markets and economic channels to Korean and Arab consumers who are enthusiastic about the Korean cultural wave (Hallyu). For this reason, this study is expec... 최근 세계에서 한류가 큰 인기를 얻고 있으며 빠르게 확산되고 있다. 한국 드라마, 대중가요, 영화, 음식, 패션, 문학, 언어 등을 통해 한국과 아랍 사이의 문화적, 언어적 장벽을 깨지고 있다. 따라서 문화 간 컬래버레이션으로 하여금 다양한 문화를 가진 사람들을 조화롭게 만들며 서로 혜택을 주고 사회에 대한 새로운비전의 개념을 발견하고자 한다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 ‘한국 궁서체’와 ‘아라빅 디와니체’의 두 가지 서체를 컬래버레이션하여 섬유&패션제품의 현대적 캘리그래피 컬래버레이션 디자인을 혁신하는 것이다. 이는 한국과 아랍 문화유산의 아름다움을반영하면서도 각 문화의 정체성을 보존하고 서체적 특성과 미학을 보여준다. 컬래버레이션 디자인은 소비자들에게 독특한 디자인에 대한 관심을 높이고 새로운 경험을 제안함과 동시에 섬유&패션 제품의 디자인과 구현에 있어 현대적인 추세에 발맞춤하는 것이다. 이로 인하여 패션산업의 새로운 시장과 경제 채널을 구축할 수있는 기회를 선도하고 디자인 경쟁력을 강화한다. 연구범위는 첫째, 한국(조선)과 아랍(오스만 튀르크) 궁중에서 각각 고대 황궁의 사용처와 특성의 측면에서공통점이 있는 서체인 ‘한국 궁서체’와 ‘아라빅 디와니체’를 선정하였다, 이 두 서체의 특징은 모두 곡선의부드러움이 강조된 것이다. 둘째, 한글을 창제하신 세종대왕의 한글 창제 정신을 담은 사랑(Love), 희망(Hope)을 콘셉트로 하여 20~30대 소비자에게 적합한섬유&패션 상품에 응용하였다. 연구방법은 이론적 고찰을 위한 국내외 선행연구를바탕으로 관련 논문, 박물관 자료, 서적, 인터넷, 기타각종 간행물 등에서 수집한 자료를 분석하는 것으로시작하였다. 이러한 제안을 위해 두 서체의 공통점과특징을 살리고 4가지 요소로서 감각적 요소, 의미적요소, 구성적 요소, 감성적 요소를 파악하고자 했다. 컴퓨터 그래픽 소프트웨어 포토샵, 일러스트를 이용한디자인 리소스와 모티프를 전개하였고, 시제품을 제작하기 위하여 시뮬레이션을 진행하였다. 이에 따라 한글 궁서와 아라빅 디와니 서체의 컬래버레이션 섬유&패션 제품디자인 개발이 가능하다는 결과를 도출시켰다. 위의 두 서체 양식은 그들만의 독특한시각적 언어와 문화적 의미를 가지고 있으며, 그들의 협력은 두 가지 다른 예술적 전통의 조화로운 융합을 만들어 낼 수 있다. 이 두 서체는 글자의 연결이 유연하며획이 깔끔하여 이를 조합하면 생동감 있고 역동적인 다양한 시각적 이미지를 만들 수 있다. 첫 번째 제안 ‘사랑’은. 실질적이고 효과적인 감각, 따뜻한 가정의 느낌즉, 활동적인 30대 여성의 니즈를 부합하도록 디자인하였다. 두 번째 제안 ‘희망’은 역동적인 미래를 내다보며, 한류 문화를 열정적으로 증진할 에너지를 가진 20대들이 열광하는 한류문화의 느낌을 표현하였다. 마지막으로 새롭게 컬래버레이션한 캘리그래피 디자인이 ‘한류’에 열광하는 한국과 아랍 소비자들에게 새로운 시장과 경제 채널들을 열어줄 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 또한 이를 컬래버레이션한 현대 디자인 제품의 다양성을 통해 한국과 아랍 국가 간 장벽을 제거되고 문화적 다리가 놓여지길 기대한다. 이러한 이유로본 연구는 한국과 아랍권의 문화적 협력을 통해 섬유&패션 제품디자인의 발전에 중요한 영향을 미칠 것으로 강조된다.

        홈 인테리어 제품디자인에 나타난 콜라보레이션 사례연구

        현대인들이 점차 많은 시간을 가정에서 소비하게 되면서 신체적 편안함과 정서적 안정감, 심리적 만족감을 줄 수 있는 홈 인테리어 제품디자인에 대한 관심이 점점 증가되고 있는 실정이다. 기존의 단순한 물리적인 기능의 개념에서 탈피하여 미적인 측면과 함께 사용하는 사람의 감성과 심리적인 측면까지 고려하는 추세로 변화하고 있다. 주거공간의 인테리어 제품디자인은 벽지, 침구류, 커튼(Drapery), 소파(Upholstery)와 쿠션(Cushion)을 비롯하여 카펫(Carpet), 테이블웨어(Tableware)등 소품에 이르기까지 실내 곳곳에서 그 활용 범위와 가치가 높을 뿐 아니라 소비자들 욕구도 점차 다양하며 고급화되고 있다. 이에 따라 제품디자인에 관한 보다 폭넓고 전문적인 홈 인테리어 제품디자인 분석 연구가 절실히 요구 되어지고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 홈 인테리어에 적용된 콜라보레이션 현황을 조사하고, 제품에 적용된 콜라보레이션 사례를 제시하여 연구, 분석함으로써 높아진 소비자 욕구에 맞출 수 있는 다양한 홈 인테리어 제품디자인 전개와 기업 브랜드이미지를 차별화 시켜 새로운 시장을 개척 하는데 도움을 주고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위한 연구 방법은 국내외 문헌 및 인터넷 자료를 중심으로 콜라보레이션의 정의와 유형 및 특성을 고찰 분석하였다. 연구 범위로는 홈 인테리어에 적용된 콜라보레이션 제품디자인을 중심으로 벽지와 침구, 거실제품과 주방용품(Kitchen Appliance)등 제품 디자인 사례를 조사 분석하여 다음과 같은 결론을 도출하였다. 첫째, 벽지제품은 패션 디자이너와의 콜라보레이션 사례가 증가하고 있는 경향이 나타났다. 다양한 연령층을 타겟으로 한 심플하면서도 고급스러운 디자인과 예술성과 실용성을 지닌 디자인들이 상품화 되어 출시되었다. 이는 중국 등 해외 시장을 공략하는 발판이 될 수 있을 것이라고 사료된다. 둘째, 국내 콜라보레이션이 적용된 침구류 사례는 적은편이지만. 해외에서는 눈에 띄게 늘어나고 있는 추세라고 할 수 있다. 국내외 제품디자인 사례는 미흡하였으나, 기존 콜라보레이션이 적용된 제품들 반응은 매우 인기가 높았으므로 향후 콜라보레이션이 적용된 침구 제품디자인이 점차적으로 증가될 것으로 예측된다. 셋째, 거실제품은 침구류와 마찬가지로 국내의 사례는 그다지 많지 않았으나, 다양한 각도의 창의적인 아이디어 도출로 콜라보레이션 하여 실용성을 가미한 독특한 소파가 선보였으며, 디자인 측면에서의 새로운 문양과 색상이 연출되어져 있음을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 주방용품에서는 국내외 디자이너와 기업 간의 콜라보레이션 된 제품사례들이 많은 것이 특징이다. 이는 디자이너의 이미지를 살려 기업과 콜라보레이션 함으로서 소비자들이 지니고 있는 기존 이미지를 탈피시키는 즉 브랜드 및 기업이미지 마케팅 전략의 수단이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 콜라보레이션을 통한 홈 인테리어 제품디자인 개발 시도는 새로운 시장 창출과 소비자 타겟 확장을 위한 노력으로 해석할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 미흡한 국내시장은 물론, 해외시장에서의 경쟁력 강화와 새로운 시장창출, 매출 증대 향상에 도움이 될것이라 생각되며, 홈 인테리어 관련분야와 기업 및 관련 학계에 새로운 제품디자인 개발의 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이라 사료된다. As modern people are spending more time at home, there has been increasing interest in home interior product design that can bring physical comfort, emotional stability, and psychological satisfaction. The meaning of function is changing toward broader concept including not only the basic physical features, but also the aesthetic aspects and the emotional and psychological characteristics of users. The home interior product design is widely used throughout living space for products such as wallpaper, bedclothes, drapery, upholstery, cushions, carpets, tableware, and interior accessories, and is important to satisfy the consumers` needs which are getting personalized and classy. Consequently, additional study is urgently required to analyze the home interior product design more specifically and professionally The aim of this study was to give insight for the design development to meet consumer demand and to contribute exploitation of a new market by investigating current state of collaboration applied to the home interior, presenting cases of collaboration of products, and discussing them. By reviewing published literatures and web-based sources, the authors investigated and analyzed the concept, the types, and the characteristics of collaboration. The subjects of our study were collaboration product design applied to home interior products such as wallpaper, bedclothes, living room products, and kitchen appliance. The following conclusions were drawn after researching and analyzing these subjects. First, in the field of wallpaper product it appeared the trend of increasing cases collaborated with fashion designers. The simple and luxury designs for all age groups and the artistic and practical designs were commercialized. These could be footholds to improve the domestic companies` competitiveness in overseas markets such as China. Second, in the field of bedclothes the domestic companies` interest in collaboration was insufficient, but the concern of foreign companies was remarkably increasing. Although were not so many, these collaborated products were very popular, so the number of these collaborated bedclothes design products would be gradually increased from now on. Third, in the field of living room products although there also were not many cases, a unique and practical sofa was created by collaboration with various and creative ideas and the utilization of new patterns and colors were produced. Fourth, in the field of kitchen appliance there were so many products were commercialized. Especially, they were characterized by collaboration between domestic or foreign designers and manufacturing firms. These could be used as marketing strategies to break away from companies` typical images with fresh images of designers-that is the brand marketing strategy to ameliorate corporate image. The attempt to develop home interior product design by these collaborations could be considered as the effort for new market creation and expansion of business target. Therefore, we suggest that this study would help to enhance the competitive power in worldwide market, to pioneer a new market, and to increase sales. And it would be utilized as preliminary data for development of product design by companies and academia related to home interior.

        The configuration of design technology in 21st century requires collaborative design system, in which distributed design organizations and their related enterprises can mutually cooperate by overcoming time and regional restrictions, and by exchanging and sharing design data. The design system can properly deal with the dynamically changed 3-D data, and can edit data between regionally distributed designers. Designers can use the several modules that help design process. To archive the objectives, we implement the dynamic collaborative design system based on CORBA, the standard of distributed environment, and the new technologies of internet such as Java and VRML. The system is verified by applying to typical design problems.

        디자이너 토이(Designer Toy)를 활용한 패션 기업의 콜레보레이션 효과 연구

        Fashion company's art collaboration contributed fashion brand's value up and diversification of fashion design. One type of this art collaboration, designer toy marketings stand out recently. Designer toys are toys and other collectibles produced in limited editions and created by artists and designers. Fashion company made full use of designer toy to improve their corporate image through corporate campaign and giving back to the community. First, fashion company's art collaboration using designer toy contributed company corporate communication: coloring brand logo and prints, brand shop display, event marketing, storytelling advertisements. Second, fashion company's art collaboration builded convincible company image through returning their profits to society. And last designer toy used as fashion design source, 2d or 3d form. In case of fashion brand's collaboration with artists, artist masterpiece imposed upon fashion merchandise as textile. On contrary, fashion brand's collaboration with designer toy throughout introducing fashion brand logo and color upon fashion merchandise to improve corporate image.
