포스트모더니즘 관점에서 본 Anthony Browne의 어린이 그림책 특징 연구

본 연구는 Anthony Browne 그림책의 특징을 포스트모더니즘 관점에서 조명하는데 목적을 두었다. 연구대상은 Anthony Browne이 글ㆍ그림의 저자로 저작한 그림책 30권이다. 연구결과, Anthony Browne 그림책들은 포스트모더니즘의 요소들을 다분히 포함한 것으로 판단되었다. 즉 포스트모더니즘 문학의 특성인 탈정격화, 상호 텍스트성, 아이러니, 메타픽션의 요건을 충족시키며, 궁극적으로는 다원주의를 지향하는 것으로 평가할 수 있었다. 이러한 그의 그림책이 유아교육에 시사하는 바를 다음과 같이 논의하였다. Browne의 어린이 그림책은 첫째, 인식의 차원에서, 유아들이 포스트모더니즘 시대사조를 경험할 수 있는 중요한 대상이자 통로를 제공한다. 둘째, 시각적 문해의 차원에서, 그림책의 그림 읽기가 단순한 직관과 지각의 대상이 아니라 지적, 심미적 대상으로서 다루어지도록 확장시킨다. 셋째, 소통의 차원에서, 유아를 작가와 동등한 위치의 독자로 격상시킴으로써 다중의 목소리를 중시여기고 상호 이해와 존중이 중시되는 문화를 창조하는 통로를 마련한다. 넷째, 자기 삶을 이야기 하는 것이 상상력과 창의성의 주요 통로가 될 수 있음을 보여준다. The purpose of this study was to feature out Anthony Browne's picture books from a postmodernism perspective. The research questions were to investigate his artworks and personal history, to comment the distinguishing features on his picture books from the Postmodernism perspective, and to discuss the implication of it on the early childhood education. For these purpose and questions, Anthony Browne's 30 picture books were selected, which were almost all of the books he both wrote and illustrated from 1976 to 2008. According to the results of the study, definitely, Anthony Browne's picture books include enough features to be evaluated as Postmodernism artworks. He used many noticeable devices of the Postmodernism artworks such as decanonization, intertexuality(parody, pastiche), irony, and metafiction. Ultimately, he aimed the pluralism. So, Anthony Browne's picture books have some implications to early childhood education as follows: First, his picture books contribute as objects and channels that children could experience the trend of the time. Second, his picture books contribute as intellectual and esthetical artworks for visual literacy. Third, his picture books contribute to create the child-adult discussion culture of reading through reciprocal, and respectful communication. Fourth, showing a way of narrating his own life, his picture books encourage young children tell their own stories creatively.

Anthony Browne의 <겁쟁이 윌리>의 세계관 분석

『겁쟁이 윌리(Willy the Wimp)』는 세계적으로 사랑받는 Anthony Browne의 윌리시리즈를 탄생시킨 작품이다. 주인공 윌리는 Anthony Browne의 내면의 자아를 상징하며 윌리의 삶의 모습이나 방식은 작가가 생각하는 아동의 삶을 반영한다. 본 연구에서는 Vanhoozer의 문화해석 방법론에 따라 『겁쟁이 윌리』를 평론하였다. 텍스트 자체의 세계에서는 이 그림책에 Darwin의 진화론과 실존주의적 부조리가 반영되어 있음이 나타났으며, 텍스트 뒤의 세계를 조사함을 통해 Anthony Browne에게 실존주의와 초현실주의가 영향을 미쳤으나 이 역시 Darwin의 진화론에 그 기초를 두고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 텍스트 앞의 세계인 독자의 반응과 평가를 살펴본 결과, 독자들은 내용에 대한 이해가 부족하더라도 작가의 명성을 신뢰해 그림책을 긍정적으로 평가하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 결론적으로 그림책 『겁쟁이 윌리』에는 다윈의 진화론적 세계관이 투영되어 있으며, 이는 모든 의미와 가치를 부정하는 의미론적 허무주의로 귀결시킨다는 것을 알아냈다. 본 연구는 Anthony Browne의 사상적 기저가 Darwin의 진화론에 있음을 밝혔다는 의의를 가진다. 그러나 성인 독자는 이를 알아채지 못하고, 이 그림책이 아동에게 교육적으로 좋은 그림책이라고 평가하고 있다. 하지만 본 연구는 독자의 반응을 살피는 텍스트 앞 세계에서 인터넷 서평만을 가지고 분석을 하였기에 한계를 지닌다. 그리하여 본 연구는 성인 독자의 도서 선택과 평론에 윤리적 책무가 있음을 시사하며, 성인 독자들의 읽기 역량에 관한 심층 분석에 대한 후속 연구를 제안하고자 한다.

The Aspect of ‘Imagination’ and Its Educational Implicationsin Anthony Browne’s Picture BooksYoojung Jung Abstract: This study aims to explore the educational significance of various imaginations in Anthony Browne’s picture books by studying and analyzing it. The research method was to analyze the ‘aspects of imagination’ in the 3 Anthony Browne picture books. When analyzing Anthony Browne’s picture books in various ways, his picture books express various themes that only children can imagine, focusing on writing and painting. The writings and pictures in Anthony Browne’s picture books suggest the various possibilities of imagination to the children, and second, they unconsciously experience the importance of time and third, provide various experiences for the children to show abundant and diverse imaginations in the future world. Therefore, his picture books are a good medium that helps young children grow into imaginative and creative future talents. 앤서니 (Anthony Browne) 그림책에 나타난 아버지, 어머니의 모습

본 연구에서는 앤서니 브라운이 직접 글을 쓰고 그림을 그린 그림책 35권 에 나타난 아버지와 어머니의 등장 횟수를 분석하였고 그 중에 아버지와 어머니가의 성격이 중요하게 나타나는 그림책 총 9권을 분석하였다. 분석을 위하여 Blair(1991)의 연구를 바탕으로 부모의 역할을 생계부양자역할, 양육자역할, 정서적 역할, 사회적 도구 및 가치 전달역할, 성격형성역할, 부모의 부재의 6가지로 범주화 하였다. 분석 결과, 앤서니 브라운의 그림책에는 아버지와 어머니 모두 점차 변화되는 모습을 보여준다. 첫째, 아버지의 모습은 전통적인 생계부양자, 사회적 가치 전달자의 역할에서 정서적 역할, 양육자의 역할로 변화한다. 둘째, 어머니의 역할은 양육자의 역할, 정적 지지자의 역할에서 성격 형성자, 생계부양자의 역할로 변화되는 모습을 보여주지만 어머니의 역할에서 정서적 지지의 역할은 그대로 유지됨을 알 수 있었다. The purpose of this study is to analyze the parents' image referred to in children's literature as represented by Anthony Browne's picture books. Appearance number of father and mother in 35 Anthony Browne's picture books were analyzed and among them, 9 picture books were selected to do an in-depth analysis. The characteristics of the father's and mother's respective roles were analyzed in six categories such as breadwinner, fosterer, emotional supporter, social value transmitter, character former and absentee. The results showed that Anthony Browne's promote a transformation of father’s role and image in that it transformed from breadwinner to emotional supporter. The study also demonstrates more transformation in terms of the mother’s image rather than the father’s image.

Anthony Browne 그림책에 나타난 아이의 자기대상과의 관계 분석

This study aims to analyze the selfobjects of children in Anthony Browne’s literature. There has been a research of Ahn et al.(2011) on this topic which argues that the alienation of children is a prominent characteristic in Browne’s works. Although it is started from Ahn``s research, this study concentrates more on how the alienated children overcome their isolated situation with the help of their selfobjects. For the purpose of this study, 33 works both written and illustrated by Anthony Browne are collected and analyzed from the perspective of Heinze Kohut’s self psychology theory. Based on Kohut’s theory, this study examines the identity of the selfobjects of children, the functions of the selfobjects, and the process and the results of maturity of children in Browne’s literature. As a conclusion, it is argued that peers, toys, and parents appear in order as the children’s selfobjects. Among several functions of the selfobjects, the twinship function is proved to be the most common one. The following in order are mirroring, nurturing functions. Furthermore, it is argued that the majority of children in Browne’s works experience their optimal frustrations and finally reach their own maturity.

Anthony Browne (b. 1946) is a renowned contemporary author and illustrator of children’s books known for his diverse methods of portraying children’s inner worlds in his works. His works are well-received across many countries including Korea, and have thus garnered many children readers across the world. This study hypothesizes that although readers around the world are essentially reading the same material albeit translations of the text, they each have differing order of preference for Browne’s works depending on their home culture. This study also speculates that Browne’s works will have varying effects on the children of different countries. In order to provide an analysis to support the hypothesis, this study surveyed Browne’s top ten bestsellers at major booksellers in Korea, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, China, and Japan. The variation in preference between each culture will likely reflect the impact Browne’s books have on the local children. The study found that different cultural climates fostered differing orders of preference for Browne’s works. The readers of each country also appear to look for different qualities in Browne’s books compared to their counterparts across the globe.

앤서니 브라운(Anthony Browne)의 그림책에 나타나는 회복탄력성 내용 분석: 좌절과 극복의 과정을 바탕으로

The purpose of this study was to select picture books related to resilience in Anthony Browne's picture books and to examine how resilience appears. For this purpose, the criteria for selecting picture books related to resilience were set and selected. Thus, 7 picture books written and drawn by Anthony Brown published in Korea were examined. The results of this study are as follows. In Anthony Browne's picture books, situations that negatively affect small and soft-hearted characters arise, and the characters experience trying on their own or getting help from others to solve them. In addition, through overcoming these frustrations and hardships, the characters gained a positive perception of themselves, psychological stability, and experience of success. The contents of resilience shown in Anthony Brown's picture book convey that children can overcome hardships and adversity and solve them in various ways, with interesting writings and pictures. Through this indirect experience, it is expected that children will be able to recognize the value of resilience.

디자인 수사학적 관점에서 본 유아·어린이 그림책 일러스트레이션의 상징성에 관한 연구 : 앤서니 브라운(Anthony Browne)의 작품을 중심으로

In the children's picture book, when text and illustration are in perfect harmony with each other, they can be interpreted in various ways and give us great pleasure. Writers usually describe images with words and illustrators make a story with their individual images using a variety of materials and techniques. Children's Picture book implies all kinds of design, namely, image, typography, color, layout and so on. Especially visual language in the illustrations or understanding about symbols is necessary to read a picture book. Anthony Browne's Works stand conspicuous in the visual expressions and they can be interpreted in various ways. The more readers have large repertories and backgrounds, the more interested readers become. Also they can find the numerous symbol, understand contents in a variety of directions, have the pleasure of literature. In the picture book's illustrations, it is important to maximize imaginations through the unique production, the expression of a variety of image and the expression of design rhetoric and symbolic element. In this paper, I studied on symbolic elements in the illustrations of Anthony Browne's Works in the point of design rhetoric and investigated the interrelationship of design rhetoric between the symbolic elements and illustrations. 그림책에서 글과 그림이라는 두 가지 다른 시각기호가 조화를 이룰 때, 책에 실린 글과 그림은 각기 다른 해석의 가능성과 함께 즐거움을 줄 수 있다. 작가는 글을 통해 독자가 머릿속으로 상상할 수 있는 이미지를 묘사하며, 일러스트레이터는 다양한 재료와 기법을 사용하여 자신만의 이미지로 이야기를 만들어낸다. 어린이 그림책은 디자인의 모든 요소 즉 이미지, 타이포그래피, 색채, 레이아웃, 마케팅 등이 함축되어 있으며, 특히 일러스트레이션 속의 시각 언어, 즉 상징에 대한 이해는 그림책을 읽는데 필수적이다. 많은 그림책 일러스트레이션 중에서 앤서니 브라운(Anthony Edward Tudor Browne)의 작품은 읽는 사람에 따라 다양한 해석이 가능하며 시각적 표현도 뛰어나다. 독자가 가지고 있는 레퍼토리와 배경 지식이 많을수록 흥미가 더해지며, 더 많은 상징을 찾고, 다양한 방향에서 내용을 이해하며, 문학의 즐거움을 가질 수 있다. 그림책 일러스트레이션에서 글에 맞는 개성적인 연출, 다양한 이미지의 표현, 디자인 수사학적 표현과 상징 요소를 통해 상상력을 극대화시켜 주는 것이 중요하다. 본 논문은 오랫동안 정리되고 연구되어 온 수사법에서 발전한 디자인 수사학 관점에서 어린이 그림책 작가인 앤서니 브라운의 어린이 그림책 일러스트레이션에 등장하는 상징적 요소를 살펴보고, 상징적 요소에 대한 디자인 수사학과 일러스트레이션의 상호연관성을 연구해 보았다.

Anthony Browne의 [고릴라]에 그려진 전복(subversion)의 이미지

Anthony Browne’s [Gorilla] has been regarded as a representative postmodern picture book. The characteristics of postmodernity in his work such as uncertainty, parody, intertextuality, self-referentiality, polyphony, and open ending are results of the modality of texts and images. The visual allusions of images, especially, amplify the difficulty of interpretation due to their complexity and multi-layered meanings. This study paraphrased the intents of visual allusions in [Gorilla] as a form of subversion. To this end, the implications of four themes were analyzed. The four themes in this study were the following: the parody of famous art works, the visual allusion of celebrities, the image of the freemason, and, Gorilla and Hannah’s late-night date. The conclusion of this study suggests that when criticizing picture books for children, the hermeneutic attitude to discover an author’s intentions is related to the critic’s ethical aspect. Anthony Browne의 [고릴라]는 포스트모던 그림책의 대표 격으로 간주되어 왔다. 그의 작품이 보여주는 포스트모던 텍스트의 특징인 불확정성, 패러디, 상호텍스트성, 자기참조성, 다성성, 열린 결말 등은 주로 글과 그림의 양태(modality)의 불일치에 기인한다. 특히 그림 이미지의 시각적 암시(visual allusion)는 그 복잡성과 의미의 다층성으로 인해 해석의 어려움을 증폭시킨다. 본 논의는 [고릴라]의 시각적 암시가 의도하는 바를 ‘전복’(subversion)으로 요약하였으며, 이를 입증하기 위해 다음의 네 개의 주제를 살펴보았다. 첫째, 예술작품의 패러디가 함축하는 것은 무엇인가? 둘째, 유명인의 시각적 암시가 함축하는 것은 무엇인가? 셋째, 프리메이슨 상징의 이미지가 함축하는 것은 무엇인가? 넷째, 고릴라와 한나의 심야 외출이 함축하는 것은 무엇인가? 본 연구의 결론은 어린이가 읽는 그림책 텍스트를 평론하는 작업에 있어서 작가의 의도를 발견하려는 해석학적 태도가 평론가의 윤리적 책무와 관련되어 있음을 시사한다.

앤서니 브라운(Anthony Browne)의 그림책 속 등장인물의 ‘상상’의 구조 및 의미 탐색

본 연구는 앤서니 브라운(Anthony Browne)의 그림책 속에 나타나는 등장인물의 ‘상상’이 어떻게 표현되고, 어떤 의미를 가지는지 알아보고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 앤서니 브라운이 직접 글을 쓰고 그림을 그린 그림책 중 상상하기의 내용이 나타나고 있는 15권을 선정하여 분석하였다. 앤서니 브라운의 그림책에 나타나는 ‘상상’을 분석하기 위하여 상상의 3차원적 구조모형을 바탕으로 상상의 원인, 상상의 대상, 상상의 표현 방식 및 결과, 상상이 주는 영향을 분석하였다. 분석 결과 상상은 내적 요인과 외적 요인에 의해 시작되며, 상상의 주체에게 의미 있는 인물이나 공간이 상상의 대상으로 선택되고 있었다. 상상의 표현은 주로 외형적인 변화가 많았으며, 다른 대상과 조합되는 형태도 있었다. 상상은 맥락과 정서를 통합하여 일관성 있는 흐름을 갖추고 구체적으로 표현되었지만, 현실적으로 실현될 가능성은 낮았다. 앤서니 브라운의 그림책에 나타나는 상상은 개인적인 차원에서 나타나고 현실에 기반을 두고 표현되고 있었으며, 등장인물의 인지, 행동이나 정서에 영향을 주고 있었다.
