The Suitability Assessment for Recycling Inorganic Wastes in Korea

As of July 21, 2016, the Ministry of Environment in Korea introduced and enforced the Environmental Assessment of Recycling (EAoR) system for effective waste management and the reduction of environmental burden of recycled products. On the basis of the purpose of EAoR system, Recycling methods and assessment items for non-matrix/matrix contact recycled products are investigated including the management about leaching toxicity and the concentration of hazardous materials in designated wastes. However, there is growing concerns about environmental/human health issue with regard to the recycling of inorganic wastes; High concentration of hexavalent chromium was detected from landfill cover material recycling ferro-silt in Japan, phenol detected from waste foundary sand and arsenic detected from the sludge in water treatment plant. In this study, the sludges discharged from water treatment plant and waste foundry sands in Korea are investigated to evaluated the suitability for matrix contact recycling of inorganic wastes in Korea. sludge and sands samples are collected to investigate the hazardous substances affecting environment and human health. This study introduce the physical, chemical properties of inorganic waste and various leachate test methods including up-flow permeability test designed to simulate the flow of percolating groundwater through a porous bed of granular material.
보육시설 등에서의 실내공기질에 대한 측정 및 설문조사와 그 결과의 상관성 연구

Recently, interest in the Indoor Air Quality is increasing. However, only a few studies have been conducted on the Indoor Air Quality in child-care centers. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between the measurement and survey results of Indoor Air quality in child-care centers. CO₂, PM10, HCHO and VOCs were measured in 2 places of 63 child-care centers and survey about satisfaction for Indoor Air Quality in child-care center was conducted to the manager in each center. Correlation coefficient was calculated by SPSS. The results show that there is no correlation between measurement and survey results. Consequently, subjective satisfaction of the manager does not indicate Indoor Air Quality in child-care centers.
Advanced Strategy for plastic wastes to response to the Basel Convention

Since joined in the Basel Convention in 1994, South Korea has established policies and strategies to minimize risks to human health and the environment caused by hazardous wastes and other wastes, and participated in the Conference of the Parties to deliberate and adopt amendments to the Basel Convention and its annexes and protocols. In this presentation, we summarized the issues that Korea needs to respond to from the discussed items in various fields, such as Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment(WEEE) and End of Life Vehicles(ELV) at the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Waste and Their Disposal Fifteenth meeting(COP-15) held in April 2022, and also our future commitment plan to response the Basel decision briefly. In addition, we would like to introduce recently domestic policy trends such as ‘Master Plan for Resource Circulation (2018 to 2027)’, ‘De-Plastic Measures’ and the challenges of the current plastic waste management system as well as the future direction of plastic waste which is referred to as the main culprit of environmental pollution such as marine plastic litter and microplastics in the world.
보육시설에서 공기청정기와 환기가 실내공기질에 미치는 영향

Recently, the number of disease, atopy, rhinitis and asthma, caused by poor Indoor Air Quality is being increased so that the standard become strict. For this reason, we measured the Indoor Air Quality in child care facilities and checked whether air cleaners were installed or not in the space and their sense of satisfaction. This study was proceeded as following. First, PM10 and CO2 measurements from child care facilities. Second, questionnaire and interview for employees' satisfaction. Third, investigation of correlation between PM10 concentration and satisfaction.

According to the growing population and increased the use of machinery, indoor noise which is invisible pollution, is threatening human health. Indoor noise can be absorbed, deflect, refract, and reflect sounds. In addition, the vibration of a sound wave is absorbed by leaves, branches and soil. Therefore, by understanding the properties of indoor sound environment in accordance with the availability of indoor plants, a basic study on the indoor noise reduction effect of plantation in an indoor space was conducted. In this study, experiments were conducted by grouping into the space with no plantation, the space where 3% of total room volume was planted with Spathypyllum, and the space where 3% of total room volume was deployed with paper-based structures. High frequency non-directional sound source (Supper Tweeter Source) was set up in an indoor space (5.0m×5.0m×2.5m) to measure indoor noise. We could know that 1) in terms of reverberation time under different frequency range, reverberation time significantly decreased under 1 ㎑, 2 ㎑ and 4 ㎑ frequency range on the plantation status. And 2) Each arrangement type had substantial effect on reducing reverberation time and on increasing acoustic absorptivity in low frequency range. 3) Among arrangements types, equipartition type of plantation was most effective in reducing reverberation time. 4) Sound absorption effect of the plantation status was better and in particular, it was much more effective in a low frequency band. In overall, it showed that it is effective in reducing the noise stress of people in a room.

Objectives: Deletion in the short arm of chromosome 3 is common in many human cancers, including sporadic and hereditary renal carcinomas, small cell lung carcinomas, non-small cell lung carcinomas, and carcinomas of the ovary, breast, and cervix. A high frequency of chromosomal aberrations in head and neck cancers involving chromosome 3p has also been reported. These findings suggest that multiple tumor suppressor genes may be present on the short arm of chromosome 3. Materials and Methods: To investigate the possibility of chromosome 3p deletions in the Korean head and neck cancer patients, we applied a polymerase chain reaction(PCR)-based Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism analysis to the DNA samples of matched normal mucosa and head and neck squamous cell carcinomas from 19 patients. Results: In the 19 normal samples heterozygosity at the polymorphic loci varied: 6 at the D3F15S2 locus(on telomeric 3p21), 2 at the D3S32 locus(on centromeric 3p21), and 4 at the THRB locus(on centromeric 3p24). In 12 matched carcinoma specimens, LOH(loss of heterozygosity) was observed at D3F15S2 in 1 of 6(17%), D3S32 in 1 of 2(50%), and at THRB in 2 of 4 cases(50%). Conclusion: The frequency of chromosome 3p deletion in the Korean head and neck carcinomas appear as other country did.
