Properties analyses and treatment characteristics of waste slurry discharged in the wetted flue gas desulfurization process using Mg(OH)₂as a absorbent were investigated. Aeration and coagulation test were carried out to evaluate variation of some factors such as COD, SS, T-N, etc. related to waste slurry treatment. The hydraulic retention time(HRT) and coagulant dosage rate were applied as operating variables in experiment. As experimental results, the reduction effects of COD, SS in aeration test were distinct, due to oxidation of SO₃ and floc, formation of suspended solids. It was also found that the reduction efficiencies of SS and T-P in coagulation test are higher than 90%.

This bench-scale research investigated the aeration cycle(on/off) as the controlling factors for nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a 2-stage, intermittent aeration process. At this experiment, the aeration cycle time(air-on/air-offJ was 30min/30min, 60min/60min, 90min/90min. Organic matter removal was observed more than 90% regardless of the aeration cycle and phosphorus removal was relatively high when the aeration cycle time was 60min/GOmin. On the other hand, For all of the aeration cycle, TN removal was appeared less than 55%. This result was probably due to the limitation of the external substrate for heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification.

In this study, we made investigation into water permeation, solute separation, concentration and Na^(+), K^(+), Mg^(2+), Ca^(2+), Cl^(-), SO^(2)_(4)-, HCO^(-)_(3) ions separation of seawater by the revers osmosis process using a suitable semipermeable membrane. The different thickness of membranes were prepared. On heat treatment, temperature was 80℃ and thier effects were also investigated. The flat single module system was made to be capable of treating feed solution at 200-2000cc/min and 120 atm. The experimental results can be summerized as follows: 1) As the effective operating pressure increased, permeability of pure water proportionally increased. 2) As the exposure period of the manufactured membrane in air increased, permeation rate increased, but as the thickness of the membrane increased, permeation rate decreased. 3) The capacity for being reproductive of the manufactured membrane (CA: 30wt%, Formamide: 45wt%, Acetone: 25wt%) in their performance was less than 10-30% and agreed with that reported in the literature. 4) We could separated about 85-95% of salt ion in seawater using a flat single module system.

Background: It is known that the prevalence and social burden related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is increasing. Previous survey published at 2008 demonstrated that 13.4% of subjects aged over 40 years had airflow obstruction (FEV1/FVC <0.7) in Korean population. However, current status of prevalence and characteristics of elderly who have obstruction airway disease (OAD) is not well investigated yet. Methods: A total of 2566 adults (1109 of male and 1457 of female; mean age 73.4±6.4) were included from public health survey during 3 years. Pulmonary function was measured by portable flow-volume device. A standard questionnaire (CAT score), smoking status, respiratory symptoms such as cough, sputum, dyspnea, and comorbid illness were collected. Results: The prevalence of person with OAD which was defined as FEV1/FVC <0.7 was 18.5% (Male 29.2%, Female 10.4%). Mean FEV1 change was -33mL per year in both men and women. There was significant correlation between age and prevalence of OAD. Former or current smoking was significantly more common in group of OAD. Among persons with OAD, 56.2% have FEV1 below 80% of predicted. The proportion of person according to GOLD stage A-D was 50.6%, 37.9%, 4.6%, and 6.9% respectively. Comparing GOLD stage A with B, persons with GOLD stage B were tent to have low BMI and comorbid illness such as hypertension and diabetes. In multivariate analysis, factors associated with higher CAT score in OAD were advanced COPD stage, history of smoking, and female gender. Conclusions: Our data indicate that the prevalence of COPD in elderly is still high and large number of person is undiagnosed and untreated.

Therapy using stem cells for the liver fibrosis is a prospective alternative to overcome the insufficiency of transplantable liver donor. Here, we demonstrated xenogeneic human cell therapy for the treatment of rat liver fibrosis without the use of an immunosuppressant. Liver fibrosis was induced by dimethylnitrosamine for 5 weeks in six-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats. Human umbilical cord blood- and adipose tissue-derived multipotent stem cells were injected intravenously by the tail vein after one week. Blood samples were collected and liver samples were stained with Masson`s trichrome in order to evaluate the amount of fibrosis. After the cell injection, the level of total protein, albumin, alanine transaminase and aspartic acid transaminase was recovered to the similar level of the normal rats. The liver weight per body weight increased after the cell injection. Collagen fiber, near the portal triad and marginal region, was reduced, significantly. Taken together, it is suggested that xenotransplantation of multipotent stem cells might be a candidate for the treatment of liver fibrosis without the use of an immunosuppresant.

Regulatory B cells, also well-known as IL-10-producing B cells, play a role in the suppression of inflammatory responses. However, the epigenetic modulation of regulatory B cells is largely unknown. Recent studies showed that the bromodo-main and extra-terminal domain (BET) protein inhibitor JQ1 controls the expression of various genes involving cell pro-liferation and cell cycle. However, the role of BET proteins on development of regulatory B cells is not reported. In this study, JQ1 potently suppressed IL-10 expression and secretion in murine splenic and peritoneal B cells. While bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4) was associated with NF-κB on IL-10 promoter region by LPS stimulation, JQ1 interfered the interaction of BRD4 with NF-κB on IL-10 promoter. In summary, BRD4 is essential for toll like receptor 4 (TLR4)-mediated IL-10 expression, suggesting JQ1 could be a potential candidate in regulating IL-10-producing regulatory B cells in cancer.
