Comparative Investigation of Flavors in Cigarettes by Electronic Nose and GC/MS

An Electronic Nose(E-Nose) and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS) are meanwhile conventional technique to analyze volatile materials in many industries (e.g., food, medicine, environment) and have broad acceptance in the analysis of tobacco products. In this study, an experiment where tin oxide gas sensor array responses and GC/MS profiles are used to characterize the volatile compounds of different cigarettes at the same time is performed and the measurements of two instruments are compared for cigarette samples with a known chemical information. E-Nose and GC/MS were employed to differentiate and match flavored cigarettes with commercial tobacco flavoring agents (lavender, vanilla, peppermint, orange, star anise). For verifying reliability of two systems, the analyses were conducted in terms of amount of flavors in each cigarettes using partial least squares (PLS) and with the principal components analysis (PCA). Various chemical sensors and GC/MS data was reduced into two principal factors (PC1, PC2) for being distinguished with visualized regions. Both systems provided adequate results for odor characteristics of cigarettes in this study with each instrument having its own advantages and disadvantages.

최근 무선통신 분야에서 UAV(unmanned aerial vehicle) 관련 연구가 매우 활발히 진행되고 있다. 이에 따라 3차원 공간에서 네트워크 성능 향상을 위한 무선 자원의 효율적인 사용은 매우 중요하다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 무선 통신 환경에서의 캡처효과(capture effect)를 이용하여 채널 사용률을 향상시키기 위하여, 커넥티드-UAVs의 수평 거리 분포에 따른 랜덤 접속 프로토콜 별 캡처효과 성능을 비교 분석한다.
Solventless solid‐phase extraction using Zn ion‐imprinted polymer detected by colorimetric method

Ion-imprinted polymers attract a lot of attention and are actively studied because of easy preparation and their high selectivity. Zn is known to be essential mineral in human body; however, when it is absorbed into our body, it is hardly discharged completely and causes various disease or side effects. To suggest new method for selective Zn extraction, Zn ion-imprinted polymer (ZIIP) was synthesized by bulk polymerization and NZIIP (non-ZIIP) was prepared as a control. Then, ZIIP and NZIIP were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate structural changes during polymerization. Adsorption isotherm studies indicated that sigmoidal Langmuir isotherm equation was fitted well and the maximum adsorption capacity and affinity of Zn on ZIIP was superior to NZIIP. Dithizone was used to chelate with Zn in supernatant for colorimetric determination. ZIIP-solid-phase extraction potentially used as Zn ion filter was investigated showing good removal efficiency.

<P>Stem cell therapy for damaged cartilage suffers from low rates of retention, survival, and differentiation into chondrocytes at the target site. To solve these problems, here we propose a two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) nanocomposite system. As a new two-dimensional (2D) material, hexagonal layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with a uniform lateral length of 23 pcm were prepared by a hydrothermal process. Then, tonsil-derived mesenchymal stem cells (TMSCs), arginylglycylaspartic acid-coated LDHs, and kartogenin (KGN) were incorporated into the gel through the thermal-energy driven gelation of the system. The cells exhibited a tendency to aggregate in the nanocomposite system. In particular, chondrogenic biomarkers of type II collagen and transcription factor SOX 9 significantly increased at both the mRNA and protein levels in the nanocomposite system, compared to the pure thermogel systems. The inorganic 2D materials increased the rigidity of the matrix, slowed down the release of a soluble factor (KGN), and improved cell material interactions in the gel. The current 2D/3D nanocomposite system of bioactive LDH/thermogel can be a new platform material overcoming drawbacks of hydrogel-based 3D cell culture systems and is eventually expected to be applied as an injectable stem cell therapy.</P>
