<P><B>Stealth Nod Factor Recognition</B></P><P>Legumes' symbiotic interaction with nitrogen fixing bacteria supplies the plant with nitrogen. Many important crop plants, however, cannot establish these symbioses and, thus, agriculture depends on externally applied fertilizers. Surprisingly, <B>Liang <I>et al.</I></B> (p. 1384, published online 5 September) found that several nonleguminous plants, including <I>Arabidopsis</I>, tomato, and corn, were able to respond to the same Nod factors that initiate the microbial symbiosis in soybean.</P>

A series of the modified Pt/SiO2–Al2O3 diesel oxidation catalysts with different WO3 loading were prepared through co-impregnation method. With an optimum additive loading of 2 wt% WO3, the catalyst significantly improved the performance and its stability. Compared to the free-tungsten sample, the catalyst increased the maximum conversion of NO by 5–10% and decreased the reaction temperature for 30% NO conversion by 7–28 C. It was found that there exist the electron and structure interaction between platinum and tungsten species. The interactions can generate and maintain more Pt sites in metallic state for the catalytic oxidation with enhanced activity and stability.

Background/Aims: Serum fibrosis scores comprised of common laboratory tests have high utility to assess severity of liver fibrosis. We aimed to derive and validate a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk score based on serum fibrosis scores to predict HCC in treatment-naive chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. Methods: Fifteen thousand one hundred eighty-seven treatment-naive adult CHB patients were identified to form the training cohort in this retrospective study. Individual fibrosis score was included to construct a new HCC prediction score. The score was externally validated in an independent treatment-naive Korean CHB cohort. Results: 180/15,187 patients (1.2%) in training cohort and 47/4,286 patients (1.1%) in validation cohort developed HCC during a mean follow-up of 52 and 50 months, respectively. The newly developed HCC risk score, Liang score, is composed of gender, age, hepatitis B virus DNA, fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index, and ranges from 0 to 22. Area under the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve of Liang score was 0.79 (95% confidence interval, 0.70-0.89). A cutoff value of nine provided an extremely high negative predictive value of 99.9% and high sensitivity of 90.0% at 5 years in the validation cohort. Patients with Liang score ≤9 had HCC incidence <0.2% per year in both training and validation cohorts, in whom HCC surveillance might be exempted. Conclusion: A novel HCC risk score, Liang score, based on FIB-4 index, is applicable and accurate to identify treatment-naive CHB patients with very low risk of HCC to be exempted from HCC surveillance. Reticulon 3 (RTN3) is an endoplasmic reticulum protein that has previously been shown to play roles in neurodegenerative diseases, but little is known about its function in the kidneys. The aim of the present study was to clarify the roles of RTN3 in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney fibrosis. In this study, RTN3 levels were measured in kidney tissues from healthy controls and CKD or kidney fibrosis patients. An RTN3-null mouse model was generated to explore the pathophysiological roles of RTN3 in the kidneys. The underlying mechanisms were studied in primary proximal tubular epithelial cells and HEK293 cells in vitro. The results showed that (1) a reduction in RTN3 in mice induces CKD and kidney fibrosis; (2) decreased RTN3 expression is found in patients with CKD; (3) RTN3 plays critical roles in regulating collagen biosynthesis and mitochondrial function; and (4) mechanistically, RTN3 regulates these phenotypes by interacting with GC-Rich Promoter Binding Protein 1 (GPBP1), which activates the IGF2-JAK2-STAT3 pathway. Our study indicates that RTN3 might play crucial roles in CKD and kidney fibrosis and that a reduction in RTN3 in the kidneys might be a risk factor for CKD and kidney fibrosis.

Transferring the recombinant S. cerevisiae T73-63 from 30 oC to 4 oC resulted in 41.4% increment of β-carotene concentration (3.96mg/g dry cell weight) relative to that of 30 oC, which was accompanied with the accumulation of fatty acid and ergosterol. The comparisons of the transcriptional levels of mevalonate pathway genes indicated that the expressions of HMG1, ERG9, ERG19, ERG20 and IDI1 at 4 oC were all higher than those of 30 oC, respectively. This suggested that increased transcriptions of mevalonate pathway genes contribute to the improvement of β-carotene production at low temperature. We also found that supplementation of 30mg/L triclosan, an inhibitor of fatty acid synthesis, led to further 28.3% enhancement of β-carotene concentration (4.94mg/g DCW), which was 18.8% higher than that of 30 oC with the same concentration of triclosan. The higher expressional levels of HMG, ERG19 and ERG20 and the simultaneous increment of ergosterol content (17.8%) suggested that more carbon source was transferred from fatty acid synthesis to mevalonate pathway under the circumstance of appropriately blocking fatty acid synthesis at low temperature (4 oC), which resulted in a higher increment of β-carotene production compared to that of 30 oC. The results of this study collectively suggest that the combination of reducing temperature and adding fatty acid synthesis inhibitors is a potential approach to improve the production of desirable isoprenoid compounds such as carotenoids.

It is an important foundation for the in-depth application of the propositional logic to compute all reductions, and this is a hot subject at present. This paper defines the identity element concept and the zero element concept in concept lattice. It proves that the minimal transversal of waned values hypergraph of zero element concept is a reduction in inducible context, and it also proves that the minimal transversal set is a full reduction set. Furthermore, the paper presents a new method based on intent waned values and hypergraph minimal transversal of concept lattice. By this method, all reductions can be quickly computed all at once. It develops the reducing algorithm. Compared with the original algorithm, which compute a reduction every time in first and gradually aggregate all reductions, the operating number of the improved algorithm is remarkably reduced. The approach has the remarkable advantages and good results.

A new compound, 4-methoxyl 5-hydroxymethyl benzoic 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), has been isolated from the leaves and stems of Acer mandshuricum, along with nine known compounds (2-10). Their structures were determined by a variety of spectroscopic analyses. The effect of compounds 1-10 on the function of osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells was examined by determining alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, collagen synthesis, and mineralization. Compound 1significantly increased the function of osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells; 5.0 μM of 1 increased ALP activity, collagen synthesis,and mineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells to 114.7, 119.5, and 108.2% (P < 0.05) of the basal value, respectively. In addition, compounds 2-10 also potently increased the function of osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells.
Dynamic Thermal Rating of Overhead Transmission Lines Based on GRAPES Numerical Weather Forecast

Dynamic thermal rating technology can effectively improve the thermal load capacity of transmission lines. However, its availability is limited by the quantity and high cost of the hardware facilities. This paper proposes a new dynamic thermal rating technology based on global/regional assimilation and prediction system (GRAPES) and geographic information system (GIS). The paper will also explore the method of obtaining any point meteorological data along the transmission line by using GRAPES and GIS, and provide the strategy of extracting and decoding meteorological data. In this paper, the accuracy of numerical weather prediction was verified from the perspective of time and space. Also, the 750-kV transmission line in Shaanxi Province is considered as an example to analyze. The results of the study indicate that dynamic thermal rating based on GRAPES and GIS can fully excavate the line power potential without additional cost on hardware, which saves a lot of investment.
