N/A Vascular endothelial cells were isolated from freshly obtained human umbilical cords by trypsin or collagenase digestion of the interior of the umbilical vein. Selective isolation of endothelial cells were identified through histologic examination of the cord vein before and after the enzyme digestion, The eluent cells were grown in culture as a homogenous population and subcultured for periods of up to 2 months. The cultured human endothelial cells grew as monolayers of closely opposed, large, polygonal shape with indistinct cell borders, whereas mixed human smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts grew as overlapping layers of parallel arrays of slender, spindle-shaped cells. Cultured endothelial cells also expressed factor VIII antigen. This study demonstrated that it is possible to culture morphologically and immunologically identifiable human endothelial cells eluted from the umbilical vein for periods of up to 2 months.

Objective: To compare the incidence and clinical characteristics of tuberculosis (tbc) between patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and kidney transplantation (KT) recipients. Methods: Six hundreds and twenty-two patients who were diagnosed as SLE from 1990 to 2001 in Kang-Nam St. Mary`s hospital were reviewed, retrospectively. As a control group, 347 kidney transplant recipients in the same center were evaluated. The extent of tbc was categorized into two groups: (1) limited disease (2) extensive disease. Cumulative steroid dosage and disease activity index including SLEDAI, serum complement levels, and anti-dsDNA titers were compared between the two groups. Results: The cumulative incidence rate of tbc was similar in both groups (37 cases and 5.7% in SLE versus 17 cases and 4.9% in KT). Mean interval from SLE diagnosis or KT to tbc development was not different between the two groups. The most common site of tbc was lung/pleura, and the others included lymph nodes (2 cases), knee joint (1), bone marrow (1), critecentral nervous system (1), kidney (1), colon (1), liver (1), and skin (1) in SLE. In contrast, most of tbc (16/17) developed exclusively in the lung and pleura in KT recipients. Cumulative doses of prednisolone 1 or 6 months before tbc diagnosis were not different between the two groups. Interestingly, extensive disease tended to be more frequent in SLE patients than in KT recipients although immuno-suppressants such as cyclosporine and azathioprine were more frequently administered in KT recipients. There were no differences in disease activity index including SLEDAI, complement levels, and anti-ds DNA titers at the time of tbc diagnosis as well as in the cumulative doses of steroid between extensive and limited diseases of tbc in SLE. Conclusion: The cumulative incidence rate of tbc was higher in SLE patients than in general population. The patterns of tbc tended to be more extensive in SLE compared to KT recipients in whom a stronger immuno-suppression was required, suggesting that immune dysfunction implicated by SLE itself may play an important role in determining the incidence and patterns of tbc infection.

PURPOSES: This study aims to establish the priority of introducing anti-icing spray system for regions of the National Highways in South Korea. Using this study, a logical plan for instituting such an anti-icing spray system can be established for the National Highways. METHODS : The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed to prioritize the implementation of an anti-icing spray system on Korean highways. For this purpose, an existing scoring table developed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure Transport Affair was slightly modified in order to reflect recent trends in winter maintenance. A survey was conducted to gather the preferences regarding the developed hierarchy of road experts and agencies. Finally, the final score was produced by integrating the scoring results with estimated weights for each evaluation criterion. RESULTS: In general, Honam and the metropolitan areas have relatively high priority while other areas such as Chungcheong, Young Nam, and Gang Won appear to be uniform in importance in terms of establishing an anti-icing spray system. This result may indicate that historical weather data and traffic volumes are significant factors in deciding in winter maintenance polices CONCLUSIONS : In this study, useful insights are suggested regarding winter maintenance by simultaneously performing rapid snow removal and proactive treatment. Issues of resource allocation may be potential research items in the field transportation engineering.
Helicobacter pylori 감염은 상부위장관 및 대장 병변을 동시에 일으킬 수 있는가?

Background/Aims: Some studies showed the higher prevalence of K. pylori infection in the patients with colon adenoma and carcinoma than control subjects. The association between H. pylori infection and colonic diseases is controversial. We evaluated K. pylori infection rate and the related upper gastrointestinal lesions in the patients with colon polyp and cancer. Methods: Ninety-four subjects, 67 with colonic lesions and 27 without colonic lesions were enrolled. Colon polyp and cancer were confirmed by colonoscopic biopsy or polypectomy. The enrolled subjects were received gastroduodenoscopic examination. K. pylori infection was evaluated serologically and/or with rapid urease test. The fasting serum gastrin level was measured. Results: H. pylori infection rates in the patients with and without colonic lesions were 67.2% and 44.4%, respectively (p$lt;0.05). Upper gastrointestinal lesions were observed in 27 of 67 patients (40.3%) with colonic lesions and in 11 of 27 patients (40.7%) without colonic lesions (p=l.0). Mean levels of serum gastrin with and without colonic lesions were 91.7±31.1 pg/mL and 88.1±37.7 pg/mL, respectively (p=0.15). Conclusions: Our study supports the relationship between H. pylori infection, colorectal neoplasia. Although there was no significant difference, the possibility of the simultaneous presence of upper gastrointestinal lesions in the patients with colorectal polyp and cancer was suggested. But the relationship between serum gastrin and the development of colorectal polyp and cancer was not documented.
Evaluation of Prediction Models for Road Surface Temperature Change Patterns using Machine Learning

The road surface condition in winter is important for road maintenance and safety. To estimate the road surface condition in winter, the RWIS(Road Weather Information System) is used. However RWIS is not measured the continuous road surface information but measured the locational road surface information. To overcome the current RWIS limitation, the thermal mapping sensor which can collect the road surface condition employed in some countries. Although the thermal mapping sensor can collect the continuous road surface information, it is difficult to collect vast data due to apply few probe car. This study suggests a specific methodology for the prediction of road surface temperature using vehicular ambient temperature sensors and collect road surface and vehicular ambient temperature data on the defined survey route in 2015 and 2016 year, respectively. To find out the correlation between road surface and ambient temperature which may affect patterns of road surface temperature variation, the various weather and topographical conditions along with the test route were considered. For modelling, all types of collected temperature data should be classified into response and predictor before applying a machine learning tool such as MATLAB. In this study, collected road surface temperature are considered as response while vehicular ambient temperatures defied as predictor. Through data learning using machine learning tool, models were developed and finally compared predicted and actual temperature based on average absolute error. According to comparison results, model enables to estimate actual road surface temperature variation pattern along the roads very well. Model III is slightly better than the rest of models in terms of estimation performance. When correlation between response and predictor is high, when plenty of historical data exists, and when a lot of predictors are available, estimation performance of would be much better.

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a type of non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma, and this tumor is predominantly composed of large lymphoid cells that have a strong expression of CD30. Two major groups of ALCL have been described. The first is a spectrum of CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorders, including primary cutaneous ALCL and lymphomatoid papulosis. The second is systemic nodal ALCL, which can be subdivided into two groups: anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive and ALK-negative. The relative frequency of ALCL in Korea is about 19% of all cutaneous lymphomas. Solitary or multiple large nodular tumoral lesions confined to one body compartment are the most common presentation. We report here on a case of CD30 (+)/ALK (-) primary systemic ALCL in a 77 year-old-male, and the skin lesion manifested as multiple papules, plaques and tumors on the trunk, buttocks and upper and lower extremities.
