Plants have evolved complex signaling networks that enable them to adapt to adverse environmental conditions. The dehydration-responsive element-binding (DREB) transcription factors are important for plant responses to abiotic stresses. In this study, a new member of the AP2/ERF transcription factor gene family, PcDREB2A, was cloned and characterized from Polygonum cuspidatum, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. PcDREB2A, which includes a typical AP2 domain, was clustered in the A-2 subgroup of the DREB subfamily. At the seedling stage, PcDREB2A expression was induced by cold, salt, and drought stresses. A yeast one-hybrid assay and an analysis of transiently transformed tobacco revealed that PcDREB2A can specifically bind to the DRE motif and transactivate reporter gene expression. Following 200 and 250 mM mannitol treatments, the PcDREB2A-overexpressing Arabidopsis thaliana lines had longer roots and a significantly higher fresh weight than the wild-type plants. Furthermore, under drought stress conditions, the PcDREB2A-overexpressing A. thaliana plants accumulated less malondialdehyde than the control plants. These results indicate that PcDREB2A encodes a novel DREB transcription factor in P. cuspidatum. Furthermore, the data generated in this study may be useful for researchers and breeders interested in genetically engineering plants to increase drought tolerance without inhibiting growth.

The compaction characteristics of porous asphalt (PA) mixtures are significantly different from those of traditional dense-graded asphalt mixtures. Compaction efforts are critical for PA mixtures to exhibit good performance in terms of strength, functionality, and durability. The objective of this study was to determine the optimum number of gyrations for typical PA mixtures compacted using a Superpave gyratory compactor. The compaction characteristics and the influence of seven gyration levels on the indicators of air voids (AV) content, Marshall Stability (MS), multi-directional permeability, stone-on-stone contact, and durability of PA mixture were investigated through laboratory experiments. A multi-directional permeameter was designed to evaluate the multi-directional permeability of PA mixtures, including vertical, horizontal, and combined horizontal-vertical permeability. The AV content, multi-directional permeability decreases with the increasing gyrations. Based on the requirements of each indicator, the minimum and maximum gyrations for each indicator were determined. Balancing the performance of strength, functionality, and durability, the optimum number of gyrations for the PA mixtures was determined to be between 45 and 75 gyrations, which allows for different gyrations depending on the application of the PA mixture. Finally, the requirements of MS, horizontal permeability, and combined horizontal-vertical permeability are recommended for improving the performance of PA mixture.

The white-backed planthopper Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) is a major pest of rice in Asia. In spring and summer, this species migrates thousands of kilometers northward from tropical and subtropical regions into temperate climate zones, such as northern China, Korean Peninsula, and Japan. Previous studies on the migration behavior of S. furcifera have been done mainly in southern and eastern China. However, the species' pattern of seasonal migration in northern China remains unknown. In northern China, occurrence and flight trajectories of S. furcifera migration across the Bohai Sea were studied on Beihuang Island (BH) in the center of the Bohai Strait from spring to autumn 2003–2016 using searchlight trapping and trajectory simulation. During the period 2003–2016, all S. furcifera adults were captured in July, August and September; the earliest capture occurred on 12 July 2013 and the latest on 26 September 2007. The longest annual migration span at BH was 60 d in 2014. Simulation of possible migration trajectories demonstrates that S. furcifera mainly migrates between Shandong Province and Liaoning Province (or the Korean Peninsula) in both directions. Overall, our research will contribute to a better understanding of the occurrence of S. furcifera in China and to the construction of a real-time prediction system in future.

A practical application of a supercapacitor energy storage system in a polarization instrument is proposed on the basis of theenergy storage requirements of an induced polarization (IP) transmitter for geophysical exploration. We focused on the energystorage system of a supercapacitor, the topology of the power converter, and the system control strategy as key technologies, andwe performed theoretical research and experimental tests on the system and developed an experimental platform. Theexperiments validated the theoretical research on the key technologies of the supercapacitor energy storage system anddemonstrated the effectiveness of the innovation. Results showed that the storage system is efficient and satisfies the energystorage needs of the IP transmitter.

Neogambogic acid relieves myocardial injury induced by sepsis via p38 MAPK/NF-κB pathway

Sepsis-associated myocardial injury, an invertible myocardial depression, is a common complication of sepsis. Neogambogic acid is an active compound in garcinia and exerts anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification properties. The role of neogambogic acid in sepsis-associated myocardial injury was assessed. Firstly, mice were pretreated with neogambogic acid and then subjected to lipopolysaccharide treatment to induce sepsis. Results showed that lipopolysaccharide treatment induced up-regulation of biomarkers involved in cardiac injury, including lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), and troponin I (cTnI). However, pretreatment with neogambogic acid reduced levels of LDH, CK-MB, and cTnI, and ameliorated histopathological changes in the heart tissues of septic mice. Secondly, neogambogic acid also improved cardiac function in septic mice through reduction in left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, and enhancement of ejection fraction, fractional shortening, and left ventricular systolic mean pressure. Moreover, neogambogic acid suppressed cardiac apoptosis and inflammation in septic mice and reduced cardiac fibrosis. Lastly, protein expression of p-p38, p-JNK, and p-NF- κB in septic mice was decreased by neogambogic acid. In conclusion, neogambogic acid exerted anti-apoptotic, anti-fibrotic, and anti-inflammatory effects in septic mice through the inactivation of MAPK/NF-κB pathway.

휴대폰의 보급 증가와 내장 카메라 기술의 발달에 따라 무선 인터넷을 이용한 각종 서비스가 활발하게 연구ㆍ보급되고 있다. 따라서 차량민원, 주차단속, 실시간 뉴스 등 카메라를 이용한 컨텐츠의 제작이 다양하게 이루어지고 있는 것이 현실이다. 그러나 실제 휴대폰 카메라의 보급이 포화상태에 이르렀으나 기존의 모바일 컨텐츠의 아이템 고갈과 한계로 이제는 카메라를 이용한 새로운 컨텐츠의 개발이 필요하게 되었다. 또한 휴대폰 카메라의 성능 및 기능 또한 지속적으로 개선되어 향후 컨텐츠의 수요의 증가는 당연한 사실이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 국민 대다수가 소지하고 있는 휴대폰 카메라를 이용한 실시간 차량 변호 인식시스템을 구현하였다. 본 논문에서 구현한 시스템은 현재 경찰영역 등의 특수한 분야에서만 사용되고 있는 시스템을 일반인들에게도 서비스하여 각종 분야에서 다양한 응용 서비스가 가능하다.
