Conceptual design of light bascule bridge

Weiwei Xu,Hanshan Ding,Zhitao Lu 국제구조공학회 2008 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.29 No.4

This paper proposed a conceptual design of bascule bridge, which is a new kind of movable bridge with an aim of reducing the weight of superstructure. Compared with the traditional bascule bridge, the light bascule bridge chooses cable-stayed bridge with inclined pylon as its superstructure; therefore, the functions of balance-weight and structure will fuse into one. Otherwise, it adopts moving counterweight to adjust its center of gravity (CG) to open or close the bridge. In order to lighten the superstructure, it uses contact springs to auxiliary retract, and intelligent prestressing system (IPS) to control the main girder's deformation. Simultaneously the vibration control scheme of structure is discussed. Starting from establishing the mechanical model of bridge, this article tries to analyze the conditions that the design parameters of structure and attachments should satisfy to. After the design procedure was presented, an example was also adopted to explain the primary design process of this kind bridge.

Facile Synthesis of CdTe Nanorods from the Growth of Te Nanorods

        Weiwei Xu,Jinzhong Niu,Guimin Tian,Xinghui Wu,Yongguang Cheng,Xiaoyang Hu,Haoshan Hao 대한화학회 2017 대한화학회지 Vol.61 No.4

One-dimensional CdTe nanorods (NRs) are obtained by the reaction of various Cd precursors with single crystalline Te nanorod templates, which are pre-synthesized from Te precursors by a simple and reproducible solvothermal method. Throughout the process, the diffraction intensity of different crystal facets of single crystalline Te NRs varied with reaction times. Finally, by alloying Cd ions along the axial direction of Te NRs, polycrystalline cubic phase CdTe NRs with diameters of 80–150 nm and length up to 1.2–2.4 μm are obtained. The nucleation and growth processes of Te and CdTe NRs are discussed in details, and their properties are characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman scattering, and UV-vis absorption spectra. It was found that the key elements of synthesizing CdTe NRs such as reaction temperatures and Cd sources will strongly influence the final shape of CdTe NRs.

Characterization and functional analysis of a MYB gene (GbMYBFL) related to flavonoid accumulation in Ginkgo biloba

        Weiwei Zhang,Feng Xu,Shuiyuan Cheng,Yongling Liao 한국유전학회 2018 Genes & Genomics Vol.40 No.1

Flavonoids are a group of metabolites in Ginkgo biloba thought to provide health benefits. R2R3-MYB transcription factors (TFs) play key roles in the transcriptional regulation of the flavonoid biosynthesis in plants. In this study, an R2R3-MYB transcription factor gene, GbMYBFL, was isolated from G. biloba and characterized. Results of bioinformatic analysis indicated that GbMYBFL is more closely related to the R2R3-MYB involved in flavonoid biosynthesis and displayed high similarity to MYB from other plants. The genmomic sequence of GbMYBFL had three exons and two introns, with its upstream sequence containing cis-acting regulatory elements Myb binding site, Myc recognition sites, and light, SA, MeJA responsive elements. Subcellular localization analysis indicates that GbMYBFL was located in the nucleus. Quantitative realtime PCR revealed that GbMYBFL was expressed in leaves, stems, roots, young fruits, male flower and female flower, and the level of transcription in male flower and leaves were higher than that in female flower, stems, roots, and young fruits. During G. biloba leaf growth, the transcription of GbMYBFL is positively correlated with the flavonoid content, suggesting that the GbMYBFL is involved in the flavonoid biosynthesis. Overexpression of GbMYBFL under the control of the CaMV35S promoter in Ginkgo callus notably enhanced the accumulation of flavonoids and anthocyanin compared with non-transformed callus. This finding suggested that GbMYBFL positively related to flavonoid biosynthesis, and the overexpression of GbMYBFL was sufficient to induce flavonoids and anthocyanin accumulation.

      • Controlling Major Cellular Processes of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells using Microwell Structures

        Xu, Xun,Wang, Weiwei,Kratz, Karl,Fang, Liang,Li, Zhengdong,Kurtz, Andreas,Ma, Nan,Lendlein, Andreas Wiley (John WileySons) 2014 Advanced healthcare materials Vol.3 No.12

<P>Directing stem cells towards a desired location and function by utilizing the structural cues of biomaterials is a promising approach for inducing effective tissue regeneration. Here, the cellular response of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hADSCs) to structural signals from microstructured substrates comprising arrays of square-shaped or round-shaped microwells is explored as a transitional model between 2D and 3D systems. Microwells with a side length/diameter of 50 관m show advantages over 10 관m and 25 관m microwells for accommodating hADSCs within single microwells rather than in the inter-microwell area. The cell morphologies are three-dimensionally modulated by the microwell structure due to differences in focal adhesion and consequent alterations of the cytoskeleton. In contrast to the substrate with 50 관m round-shaped microwells, the substrate with 50 관m square-shaped microwells promotes the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation potential of hADSCs but reduces the cell migration velocity and distance. Such microwell shape-dependent modulatory effects are highly associated with Rho/ROCK signaling. Following ROCK inhibition, the differences in migration, proliferation, and osteogenesis between cells on different substrates are diminished. These results highlight the possibility to control stem cell functions through the use of structured microwells combined with the manipulation of Rho/ROCK signaling.</P>

Nonlinear aerostatic stability analysis of Hutong cable-stayed rail-cum-road bridge

        Xu, Man,Guo, Weiwei,Xia, He,Li, Kebing Techno-Press 2016 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.23 No.6

To investigate the nonlinear aerostatic stability of the Hutong cable-stayed rail-cum-road bridge with ultra-kilometer main span, a FEM bridge model is established. The tri-component wind loads and geometric nonlinearity are taken into consideration and discussed for the influence of nonlinear parameters and factors on bridge resistant capacity of aerostatic instability. The results show that the effect of initial wind attack-angle is significant for the aerostatic stability analysis of the bridge. The geometric nonlinearities of the bridge are of considerable importance in the analysis, especially the effect of cable sag. The instable mechanism of the Hutong Bridge with a steel truss girder is the spatial combination of vertical bending and torsion with large lateral bending displacement. The design wind velocity is much lower than the static instability wind velocity, and the structural aerostatic resistance capacity can meet the requirement.

A Multi-objective Optimization Approach to Workflow Scheduling in Clouds Considering Fault Recovery

( Heyang Xu ),( Bo Yang ),( Weiwei Qi ),( Emmanuel Ahene ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2016 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.10 No.3

Workflow scheduling is one of the challenging problems in cloud computing, especially when service reliability is considered. To improve cloud service reliability, fault tolerance techniques such as fault recovery can be employed. Practically, fault recovery has impact on the performance of workflow scheduling. Such impact deserves detailed research. Only few research works on workflow scheduling consider fault recovery and its impact. In this paper, we investigate the problem of workflow scheduling in clouds, considering the probability that cloud resources may fail during execution. We formulate this problem as a multi-objective optimization model. The first optimization objective is to minimize the overall completion time and the second one is to minimize the overall execution cost. Based on the proposed optimization model, we develop a heuristic-based algorithm called Min-min based time and cost tradeoff (MTCT). We perform extensive simulations with four different real world scientific workflows to verify the validity of the proposed model and evaluate the performance of our algorithm. The results show that, as expected, fault recovery has significant impact on the two performance criteria, and the proposed MTCT algorithm is useful for real life workflow scheduling when both of the two optimization objectives are considered.

Comparison of the effect of oral megestrol acetate with or without levonorgestrel-intrauterine system on fertility-preserving treatment in patients with early-stage endometrial cancer: a prospective, open-label, randomized controlled phase II trial (Clin

        Zhiying Xu,Bingyi Yang,Jun Guan,Weiwei Shan,Jiongbo Liao,Wenyu Shao,Xiaojun Chen 대한부인종양학회 2023 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.34 No.1

Objective: To evaluate the effect of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) plus oral megestrol acetate (MA) as fertility-preserving treatment in patients with early-stage endometrial cancer (EEC). Methods: In this single-center, phase II study with open-label, randomized and controlled design, young patients (18–45 years) diagnosed with primary EEC were screened, who strongly required fertility-preserving treatment. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) into MA group (160 mg oral daily) or MA (160 mg oral daily) plus LNG-IUS group. Pathologic evaluation on endometrium retrieved by hysteroscopy was performed every 3 months. The primary endpoint was complete response (CR) rate within 16 weeks of treatment. The secondary endpoints were CR rate within 32 weeks of treatment, adverse events, recurrent and pregnancy rate. Results: Between July 2017 and June 2020, 63 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned. Totally 56 patients (26 in MA group; 28 in MA + LNG-IUS group) were included into primary-endpoint analyses. The median follow-up was 31.6 months (range, 3.1–94.0). No significant difference in 16-week CR rate were found between MA and MA + LNG-IUS groups (19.2% vs. 25.0%, p=0.610; odds ratio=1.40; 95% confidence interval=0.38–5.12), while the 32-week CR rates were also similar (57.1% and 61.5%, p=0.743), accordingly. More women in MA + LNG-IUS group experienced vaginal hemorrhage (46.4% vs. 16.1%; p=0.012) compared with MA group. No intergroup difference was found regarding recurrence or pregnancy rate. Conclusion: Compared with MA alone, the addition of LNG-IUS may not improve the early CR rate for EEC, and may produce more adverse events instead.
