We know more about how Joseon people wrote, and the texts they produced, than about how and why they read. Existing scholarship has primarily investigated Korean premodern texts from a linguistic and bibliographical perspective, while comparatively few approaches have centered on the social and cultural aspects of their reading. The present paper offers an understanding of how the practice of reading represented a key component of the ideological and institutional configuration of the state during King Sejong’s reign (1418-1450) by analyzing reading activities taking place in the context of the royal court as recorded in the Joseon wangjo sillok (Veritable records of the Joseon Dynasty) and other selected documentary and literary sources, mainly from the Kyujanggak archives. The paper starts by exploring the practice of reading in state rituals, assessing its significance as a public demonstration of royal authority. It then investigates how reading constituted a primary activity performed by the king, the crown prince, and other young male members of the royal family. Finally, it considers how the ruler actively used reading as an instrument of governance, assigning the reading of specific books as a strategy for reinforcing ideological and administrative control in and outside the royal palace.
Proton Radiography for Inertial Confinement Fusion
L. Volpe,D. Batani,S. Baton,F. Perez,M. Koenig,Ph. Nicolai,B. Vauzour,J. J. Santos 한국물리학회 2011 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.59 No.51
Generation of high intensity and well collimated multi energetic proton beams from laser-matter interaction extend the possibility to use protons as a diagnostic to image imploding target in Inertial Confinement Fusion experiments in the framework of experimental road map of Hiper project (the European High Power laser Energy Research facility Project). Due to the very large mass densities reached during implosion processes, protons travelling through the target undergo a very large number of collisions which deviate protons from their original trajectory reducing Proton Radiography resolution below our expectations. Here We present a simple analytical model to study the Proton Radiography performance as a function of the main experimental parameters such as proton beam energy and target areal density. This approach leads to define two different criteria for PR resolution (called "strong" and "weak" condition) describing different experimental conditions. Finally numerical simulations using both Hydrodynamic and Monte Carlo codes are presented to validate analytical predictions.
The Power of Sound: Rethinking the Invention of the Korean Vernacular Script
Giovanni Volpe 성균관대학교 동아시아학술원 2025 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.25 No.1
Scholars have long debated the original motivations behind the invention of the Korean vernacular script, emphasizing both vernacular and phonological functions. However, less attention has been given to its role in regulating oral and aural engagement with the written word, a feature that profoundly influenced both individual and societal interaction with texts. This article investigates how the new script facilitated control over the auditory dimension of writing and explores the broader implications of this control for governance. By standardizing Sino-Korean readings and transcribing Chinese vernacular pronunciations, the script recognized the significance of accurate vocalization for reading Confucian classics and enhancing diplomatic communication with China. This ultimately legitimized Chosŏn as a Confucian state and a genuine member of the Ming imperial order. Moreover, the script had a crucial role in enabling the oral performance and auditory reception of court-sponsored glossed texts and literary works, thereby increasing the effectiveness of these texts in conveying court-approved political, ideological, and religious messages. Finally, challenging the prevailing view that the script primarily aimed to promote universal literacy, this article argues that its true purpose lay in facilitating oral delivery and auditory comprehension, thereby extending the reach and impact of written knowledge in Chosŏn society.

The purpose of this study is to consider the implications of diversity management by investigating the influence of team diversity on team effectiveness and the mediating effects of shared leadership and team dynamic capability. Sixty four teams were selected from Korean companies and 292 team members participated in the questionnaire survey. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS 23. The results of the study shows that there were significant correlations among team diversity, shared leadership, team dynamic capability and team effectiveness, and that team diversity had a negative correlation with the rest of the variables. Second, team diversity had a negative influence both on shared leadership and team effectiveness, and did not have a valid influence on team dynamic capability. Shared leadership and team dynamic capability both had a positive influence on team effectiveness. Third, shared leadership partially mediated between team diversity and team effectiveness, and fully mediated team diversity and team dynamic capability. Lastly, shared leadership and team dynamic capability had double mediated effect between team diversity and team effectiveness. The findings of the study implies that in order to minimize the negative influence of team diversity, sharing visions, objectives, task method or norms with team members is crucial and providing diversity management systems and educational programs could be a starting point for developing organizational culture for managing team diversity. Facilitating shared leadership among team members will enhance team dynamic capability that could bring out the positive influence of team diversity and ultimately lead to company’s success.

In this study, clusters were identified according to individual cognitive characteristics (occupational future time perspective) and motivational factors (goal orientation) for employees to accept changes and increase their adaptability. In addition, the study checked for differences in employee engagement by cluster. The study sample consisted of 514 employees working for Korean companies. The research problem was verified through cluster analysis and analysis of variance. Three groups were clustered; cluster 1 (‘cognitive lack performance type’), cluster 2 (‘time-aware learning type’), and cluster 3 (‘opportunity-aware performance type’). Employee engagement differed between the clusters, with cluster 2 showing the highest level of employee engagement, followed by cluster 3 and cluster 1. Existing studies have focused on the direct relationship between individual cognitive characteristics and motivational factors underlying employee participation. The present study adds value in that it combines two characteristics to distinguish and verify employee types.

The paper describes the key points contained in the short term HiPER (High Power laser Energy Research) experimental road map, as well as the results of two phases of the experiment performed in “HiPER dedicated time slots. Experimental and theoretical results of relativistic electron transport in cylindrically compressed matter are presented. This experiment was achieved at the VULCAN laser facility (UK) by using four long pulse beams (∽4 × 50 J, 1 ns, at 0.53 µm) to compress a hollow plastic cylinder filled with plastic foam of three different densities (0.1, 0.3, and 1 g cm−3). In the first phase of the experiment, protons accelerated by a picosecond laser pulse were used to radiograph a cylinder filled with 0.1 g/cc foam. Point projection proton backlighting was used to measure the degree of compression as well as the stagnation time. Results were compared to those from hard X-ray radiography. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations of proton propagation in cold and compressed targets allowed a detailed comparison with 2D numerical hydro simulations. 2D simulations predict a density of 2-5 g cm−3 and a plasma temperature up to 100 eV at maximum compression. In the second phase of the experiment, a short pulse (10 ps, 160 J) beam generated fast electrons that propagated through the compressed matter by irradiating a nickel foil at an intensity of 5 × 1018 Wcm−2. X-ray spectrometer and imagers were implemented in order to estimate the compressed plasma conditions and to infer the hot electron characteristics. Results are discussed and compared with simulations.
The Impact of South-South Preferential Trade Agreements on Industrial Development: An Empirical Test
( Pablo Sanguinetti ),( Iulia Siedschlag ),( Christian Volpe Martincus ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 (구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2010 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.25 No.1
Preferential trade agreements could lead to a reallocation of resources across sectors and countries. Production patterns resulting from North-North regional integration initiatives have been documented in several studies. However, empirical evidence on South-South trade agreements is limited. The purpose of this paper is to fill this gap in the empirical literature by looking at the effects of the establishment of MERCOSUR on manufacturing production patterns in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay over the period 1985-1998. We find that deepened preferential trade liberalization has fostered a reshaping of manufacturing production structures according to regional comparative advantage in labor and skilled labor. Furthermore, declining internal tariffs have weakened agglomeration forces determined by the distribution of market sizes. By using GMM estimation techniques, we ensure that these results are robust to endogeneity and serial correlation.
Reverse engineering of mechanical parts: A template-based approach
Buonamici, Francesco,Carfagni, Monica,Furferi, Rocco,Governi, Lapo,Lapini, Alessandro,Volpe, Yary Society for Computational Design and Engineering 2018 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.5 No.2
Template-Based reverse engineering approaches represent a relatively poorly explored strategy in the field of CAD reconstruction from polygonal models. Inspired by recent works suggesting the possibility/opportunity of exploiting a parametric description (i.e. CAD template) of the object to be reconstructed in order to retrieve a meaningful digital representation, a novel reverse engineering approach for the reconstruction of CAD models starting from 3D mesh data is proposed. The reconstruction process is performed relying on a CAD template, whose feature tree and geometric constraints are defined according to the a priori information on the physical object. The CAD template is fitted upon the mesh data, optimizing its dimensional parameters and positioning/orientation by means of a particle swarm optimization algorithm. As a result, a parametric CAD model that perfectly fulfils the imposed geometric relations is produced and a feature tree, defining an associative modelling history, is available to the reverse engineer. The proposed implementation exploits a cooperation between a CAD software package (Siemens NX) and a numerical software environment (MATLAB). Five reconstruction tests, covering both synthetic and real-scanned mesh data, are presented and discussed in the manuscript; the results are finally compared with models generated by state of the art reverse engineering software and key aspects to be addressed in future work are hinted at.
The Role of Viruses in the Inception of Chronic Rhinosinusitis
Hyeon Seung Lee,Eugene H Chang,Sophia J Volpe 대한이비인후과학회 2022 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.15 No.4
Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a complex inflammatory disorder that affects between 2% and 16% of adults in the United States, with estimated healthcare costs between 4 and 12 million USD. Viruses are a common etiologic factor for URIs, are frequently identified in the sinuses of patients with CRS, and trigger CRS exacerbations. Therefore, investigating the role of viruses provides an opportunity to identify their role in the pathogenesis of CRS. In this review, we identified the viruses frequently isolated in patients with CRS, as well as their associated immunologic responses and contributions to inflammation. Rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus, influenza virus, and respiratory syncytial virus are the viruses commonly found in patients with CRS. This information allows us to target pathways early in the pathogenesis of CRS, thereby playing a significant role in slowing the progression of this chronic disease.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether there is a difference in the effects of the learning approach in the workplace on subjective career success and to verify the mediating effect of career meta-competency in the relationship of the learning approach on subjective career success. Statistical analysis for 303 survey responses data was conducted using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0. In particular, the learning approach included three components: a deep learning approach, a superficial-rational approach, and a superficial-disordered approach. The results identified that the deep learning approach was positively related to subjective career success. However, the superficial-rational approach and the superficial-disordered approach was not significantly associated with subjective career success. The relationship between the deep learning approach and subjective career success was partially mediated by career meta competency. Organizations and HRD practitioners need to keenly seek ways to promote the deep learning and increase the level of reflection, and organization members should strengthen career identity and career adaptability by engaging in new tasks and educational opportunities, various networking inside and outside the organization, and continuous learning
