During a survey of fungal diversity in insect guts in Korea, two fungal strains, EML-PGH2 and EML-PUKI88, were isolated from the gut of grasshopper and soldier fly larvae inhabiting the bulrush plants at a pond located in the Chonnam National University Arboretum, Gwangju, Korea. Based on their morphological characteristics and a phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1 and ITS2) and 5.8S rDNA sequences, the strains were identified as Blakeslea trispora. To our knowledge, the zygomycete species B. trispora has not been previously described in Korea.
Study on time-dependent mechanical properties of polyurethane foams with various porosity

In this research, one-step bulk polymerization method is used to synthesize the PU matrix foam. The PU matrixes are prepared by the reaction of prepolymers, such as hydroxy terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), polycaprolactone triol (PCL) and ether modified dimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and isocyanate isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) in the presence of different hollow particles (HGM H25, HOM 100MCA, mix of H25 and 100MCA) volume percentage ranging from 0 to 75 %. The viscoelastic behavior in flexible polyurethane composites has a relationship between the recoverability the foam’s shape and behavior after the composites were affected by compression or fatigue. To understand the viscoelastic behavior of the polyurethane foam, the relaxation stress, the compression set, the cyclic compression and the cyclic stress relaxation test are investigated.

During fungal diversity surveys of the order Eurotiales in Korea, two fungal strains, EML-DG33-1 and EML-NCP50, were isolated from samples of rat dung and fig tree leaf collected at a garden located in Gwangju in 2014. To complete the National Species List of Korea, it is a prerequisite to verify whether many questionable species, which were previously recorded but not confirmed, indeed present in Korea. Herein, the isolates were confirmed as undescribed species, Paecilomyces variotii and Talaromyces amestolkiae based on the combination of morphological and phylogenetic analyses of multigenes including the rDNA internal transcribed spacer, β-tubulin, and RNA polymerase II subunit 2.

During screening fungi as potential biological control agents for plant parasitic fungi, a fungal strain, EML-FAM3, was isolated from powdery mildew leaf lesions caused by Erysiphe platani on sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.), and another strain, EML-FAMC1, from Erysiphe australiana on crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica L.). Based on the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) and 5.8S rDNA, the strains were identified as Ampelomyces quisqualis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of new mycohosts, E. platani and E. australiana, of the mycoparasite A. quisqualis on sycamore and crape myrtle plants. The hyperparasite may represent the potential for controlling E. platani and E. australiana epidemics.

While surveying the diversity of fungi of the order Mucorales, two isolates, EML-PUKI12-1 and EML-PUKI06-1, were obtained from the gut of soldier fly larvae inhabiting the bulrush at a pond located in the Chonnam National University Arboretum, Gwangju, Korea. The isolates were confirmed as Mucor irregularis and Mucor fragilis species, respectively, based on the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of rDNA internal transcribed spacer region. Such mucoralean species belonging to undiscovered taxa has not previously been described in Korea.

During a biodiversity survey of undiscovered taxa in Korea, two zygomycetous fungal strains were isolated. The first strain, EML-FSDY6-1 was isolated from a soil sample collected at Dokdo Island in the East Sea of Korea in 2013, and the second strain, EML-DG-NH3-1 was isolated from a rat dung sample collected at Chonnam National University garden, Gwangju, Korea in 2014. Based on the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer, 18S and 28S rDNA, actin and translation elongation $factor-1{\alpha}$ genes. EML-FSDY6-1 and EML-DG-NH3-1 isolates were confirmed as zygomycete species, Absidia pseudocylindrospora and Absidia glauca, respectively. Neither species has previously been described in Korea.
synthesis and properties of polyurethane (PU) from liquefied bacterial cellulose

Cellulose is the most abundant, inexpensive and readily available carbohydrate polymer in the world. In contrast to plant cellulose, bacterial cellulose (BC), with several remarkable physical properties, can be grown to any desired shape and structure to meet the needs of different applications. However, BC alone has limited capabilities to fulfill current demand on high-performance materials. In this study, BC was liquefied in polyethylene glycol - ethylene glycol, with sulfuric acid as a catalyst. The liquefied BC was mixture with hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene and isophorone diisocyanate to prepare polyurethane, under different NCO/OH molar ratios. Polyurethane was analyzed by fourier transform infrared analysis, tensile stress-strain tests, thermo gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry.
