Effect of Ingestion of Rice Bran Drink in Rats Subjected to Forced Swimming and Elevated Plus Maze Tests

Gerson Luis Faccin,Edna Regina Amante,Vera Lucia Cardoso Garcia Tramonte,Márcia Teixeira Pinto,Elisabeth Wazlawik 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.1

Bran cereals are known to contain substantial concentrations of important nutrients, bioactive compounds, fiber, minerals, proteins, lipids, and vitamins. The vitamins present in rice bran include those of the B complex (B1 and B3), which affect the central nervous system (natural antidepressant and tranquilizer effects) acting in schizophrenia, neuralgia, and fatigue. The elevated plus maze (EPM) test is a model widely used for the study of anxiety in animals. The forced swimming (FS) test is the model used most often for evaluating the antidepressant activity in animal models in pharmacology. This study examined the behavior of 32 male Wistar rats, 21 days old, in the FS and EPM tests after treatment with strawberry- or chocolate-flavored rice bran drink for 28 days. The concentration of adrenocorticotropic hormone in the plasma of the animals was determined at the beginning and end of treatment. The values found (<1.0mg/dL) showed no significant difference between the test and control groups in the periods analyzed. In the EPM, ingesting the chocolate-flavored drink showed an anxiogenic trend in the rats, and the strawberry-flavored rice bran drink led to an anxiolytic profile, although the difference was not statistically significant (P>.05). In the FS test, the duration of immobility of rats in groups consuming rice bran drinks was higher than in the control group, but without a statistically significant difference (P>.05). However, this result may indicate a tendency toward an effect on the central nervous system of the animals after the ingestion of the rice bran beverage.

A case report of an unexpected colonic polyp: cavernous hemangioma

        Mascarenhas Miguel,Morais Rui,Teixeira Regina,Macedo Guilherme 대한대장항문학회 2023 Annals of Coloproctolgy Vol.39 No.3

Cavernous hemangiomas of the colon are rare, benign vascular lesions, and the site most commonly affected is the rectosigmoid junction. Surgical treatment is recommended for large diffuse lesions but in the presence of pedunculated lesions, endoscopic resection should be preferred if possible. We report a case of a 65-year-old man referred for colonoscopy after positive fecal occult blood, that revealed at the level of the sigmoid colon, a wide base pedunculated polyp (35 mm) occupying more than half of the lumen, with the covering mucosa with a vinous appearance. In order to remove the lesion, a detachable snare was placed and polypectomy was performed. During the procedure, the detachable snare was cut with active bleeding, controlled after clip placement and diluted adrenaline injection. Afterwards, histology revealed a polypoid lesion with a hyperplastic mucosa and submucosal plane expanded by numerous thick-walled vessels in the context of a cavernous colonic hemangioma.

Effect of the Auricular Acupoint Associated with Physical Exercise in Elderly People: A Randomized Clinical Test

        Roge´ria Gonc¸alves de Carvalho Fonseca,Andre´ia Maria Silva,Luiza Faria Teixeira,Vale´ria Regina Silva,Luciana Maria dos Reis,Adriana Teresa Silva Santos 사단법인약침학회 2018 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.11 No.4

Objective: To analyze the effect of auricular acupoint associated with physical exercise on balance, mobility, and fear of falling in the elderly. Method: The study is characterized as a clinical, controlled, and randomized trial with 22 elderly people divided into two groups: kinesiotherapy group (n Z 11) and kinesiotherapy/auriculotherapy group (n Z 11). The instruments used for evaluation were Falls Efficacy Scale International; Berg Balance Scale, and Timed up and Go Test. The intervention was performed with frequency 2Â/week for 8 weeks. In the kinesiotherapy/auriculotherapy group, in addition to kinesiotherapy, auriculotherapy was applied in specific acupoints. The ShapiroeWilk test was used to determine the normality of the data, and for comparison, analysis of variance was used for repeated measures of two factors.
