Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that involves the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Matrix metalloproteinases-8 (MMP-8), neutrophil collagenase, is a functional player in the progressive pathology of various inflammatory disorders. In this study, we administered an MMP-8 inhibitor (MMP-8i) in Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) G2019S transgenic mice, to determine the effects of MMP-8i on PD pathology. We observed a significant increase of ionized calcium- binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1)-positive activated microglia in the striatum of LRRK2 G2019S mice compared to normal control mice, indicating enhanced neuro-inflammatory responses. The increased number of Iba1-positive activated microglia in LRRK2 G2019S PD mice was down-regulated by systemic administration of MMP-8i. Interestingly, this LRRK2 G2019S PD mice showed significantly reduced size of cell body area of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) positive neurons in SN region and MMP-8i significantly recovered cellular atrophy shown in PD model indicating distinct neuro-protective effects of MMP-8i. Furthermore, MMP-8i administration markedly improved behavioral abnormalities of motor balancing coordination in rota-rod test in LRRK2 G2019S mice. These data suggest that MMP-8i attenuates the pathological symptoms of PD through anti-inflammatory processes.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A single‐walled carbon nanotube rope interconnect is fabricated by utilizing dielectrophoresis and capillary condensation. The rope connects a pair of prefabricated cantilevers with good alignment and outstanding packing density. The diameter and resistance of the rope are readily controlled by adjusting the dielectrophoresis parameters such as applied voltage and frequency. The properties of the rope, including packing density, electron transport, and maximum current density, are investigated. The maximum current density of the rope is measured to be as high as 1 × 10<SUP>7</SUP> A/cm<SUP>2</SUP> in vacuum. </P>
Application study of red tide monitoring to desalination plants using chollian (COMS)

<P>Chollian (Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS)) is a geostationary satellite developed jointly by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT), the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), and the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Chollian serves not only as communications and weather satellites but also as a marine observation satellite capable of detecting ocean surface 8 times a day with Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI). Most of the recent desalination plants use Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) process, and chlorine cannot be used because the RO membrane in the main SWRO process is made of polyamide (PA). Therefore, it is very vulnerable to biofouling due to the influence of red algae and marine micro-organisms contained in seawater. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the red tide monitoring system capable of detecting and preventing the influx of red algae adversely affecting operation and maintenance (O & M) of desalination plants using Chollian in advance. The analysis was performed on Gwangyang Bay in the South Sea, South Korea with desalination plants. According to the results, the chlorophyll-a concentration in the observed values of the Ocean Color Imager was highly correlated with Cochlodinium polykrikoides concentration of the experimental values in the analysis of water sampled from a boat at approximately 95% reliability (R-2).</P>

<P>Electrochemical treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater has attracted considerable interest due to a serious of environmental problems and rigid regulations. The electro-decomposition of organics is strongly dependent on the properties of anode materials. SnO2-Sb2O5 composites are considered to be promising anode materials for use in oxidizing agents due to their low cost and high overpotential for oxygen evolution reactions (OER). In this work, SnO2-Sb2O5 catalyst composites on Ti substrates (Ti/SnO2-Sb2O5) synthesized via sol-gel and thermal spray coating methods were studied for wastewater treatment in an attempt to develop an electrode with a high electrochemical activity and enhanced stability. The physicochemical properties of the as-synthesized samples were investigated via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As an anode material for the electro-degradation of organic matter, Ti/SnO2-Sb2O5 catalysts play an important role in producing active hydroxyl radicals and retaining their original structure, consequently leading to high electrocatalytic performance in the presence of chloride.</P>

In this study, the effect of slot geometry on the film-cooling effectiveness and flow pattern on the squealer tip has been numerically investigated. Numerical analysis was performed on slot film cooling hole having three different aspect ratios, and blowing ratio was varied from 0.5 to 1.0. When the aspect ratio of slot cooling hole is low, coolant from slot cooling hole was injected into the tip floor, resulting in high film cooling effectiveness near the leading edge region. On the other hands, when the aspect ratio is high, coolant could not be injected into the tip floor and escape out of the tip floor due to mixing with tip leakage flow. However, when the blowing ratio is 1.0, coolant is injected into the tip floor regardless of the aspect ratio, and the case where aspect ratio is high has a high film cooling effectiveness over a wide area. Therefore, in designing the slot film cooling, it is necessary to select the aspect ratio considering blowing ratio.
