Facilitating Reflection on Implicit Learner Beliefs through Metaphor Elicitation

This qualitative study aims to develop and evaluate a tool which can be used to help learners autonomously reflect upon their implicitly held learner beliefs, with a view to promoting language learning practices appropriate to the individual and addressing any issues of learner beliefs which may be preventing effective learning. Metaphor was selected to serve this purpose. Metaphor is now widely acknowledged as a cognitive as well as a linguistic phenomenon. This has resulted in a wealth of research utilizing metaphor to investigate aspects of the subconscious, including implicitly held beliefs. In the case of teacher training, metaphor was used to facilitate reflection, which resulted in the development of the beliefs of the subjects. It is the purpose of this study to ascertain whether same can be achieved for learners. Through the use of metaphor elicitation, written explanations and interviews it was found that the metaphors produced by the participants were representative of their implicitly held beliefs and the process resulted in an increase in perspective consciousness in all of the participants.

The calcium-induced structural changes in the skeletal muscle regulatory protein troponin C (NTnC) involve a transition from a ‘closed’to an ‘open’structure with the concomitant exposure of a large hydrophobic interaction site for target proteins. Structural studies have served to define this conformational change and elucidate the mechanism of the linkage between calcium binding and the induced structural changes. There are now several structures of NTnC available from both NMR and X-ray crystallography. Comparison of the calcium bound structures reveals differences in the level of opening. We have considered the concept of a flexible open state of NTnC as a possible explanation for this apparent discrepancy. We also present simulations of the closed-to-open transition which are in agreement with the flexibility concept and with experimental energetics data.

Plastibell is one of the three most common devices used for neonatal circumcision in the United States, with a complication rate as low as 1.8%. The Plastibell circumcision device is commonly used under local anesthesia for religious circumcision in male neonates, because of cosmetic reasons and ease of use. Occasionally, instead of falling off, the device may get buried under the skin along the shaft of the penis, thereby obstructing the normal flow of urine. Furthermore, the foreskin of neonates is highly vascularized, and hence, hemorrhage and infection are possible when the skin is cut. Necrosis of penile skin, followed by urethral obstruction and renal failure, is a serious surgical mishap requiring immediate corrective surgery and medical attention. We report a case of fulminant urosepsis, acute renal failure, and pyelonephritis in a 4-day-old male neonate secondary to impaction of a Plastibell circumcision device. Immediate medical management was initiated with fluid resuscitation and mechanical ventilation; thereby correcting life threatening complications. Pediatricians and Emergency Department physicians should be cognizant of the complications from Plastibell circumcision device in order to institute appropriate and timely management in neonates.
The High Resolution NMR Solution Structure of Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-3

The high resolution solution structure of MCP-3 was determined using multinuclear, multidimensional NMR spectroscopy with an expressed and 13C- and 15N-labeled protein. The MCP-3 has a typical chemokine fold including 3 anti-parallel -sheets, and a C-terminal helix, but it exists as a monomer in solution under the conditions where the structure was determined (2 mM, pH 5.1 at 30°C). Based on the structure and the amino acid sequence compared to other chemokines we propose that Ile20 and Leu25 in MCP-3 play key roles in the formation of N-loop (residues between the 2nd cysteine and the 1 sheet) which has been implicated as a determinant of chemokine specificity. Additional receptor binding surface is supplied by the 40s loop (residues between the 2 and the 3 sheet) and the binding interface of the acidic N-terminal region of chemokine receptor to MCP-3 would resemble the dimerization interface of CC type dimer. 영어논문

A series of bench scale activated sludge units were operated to find the causes of filamentous bulking(Schizothrix calcicola) at the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant. The results shows that the algal bulking problem is caused by the combination of fermented brewery waste and a low/high DO pattern in the aeration basin. The volatile fatty acids in the influent are not themselves the only cause of bulking but indicators of an unidentified substance that either suppresses zoogloeal growth or stimulates algal growth during low DO conditions, because the volatile fatty acids do not stimulate algal growth unless they are added to a sewage that already contains, some fermented brewery waste. 미국 오하이오주 콜럼버스시에 소재한 하수처리장(an conventional activated sludge treatment plant: 일 평균 처리 용량은 46.4 MGD)을 대상으로 filamentous bulking(Schizothrix calcicola)의 원인규명을 위한 연구가 수행되었다. 하수관거 및 하수처리장내에서의 실제 운영조건을 실험실에서 재현하기 위하여 주정폐수와 하수의 혼합액을 산화시키기 위한 산화조와 활성슬러지 처리조를 설치하여 산화조에서의 유출수를 활성슬러지 처리조에 유입수로 투입하였다. 실험결과로 sludge bulking의 주원인은 하수 관거내에서 혐기성으로 산화되어 유입원 주정폐수와 낮은 용존산소임이 밝혀졌다. 아울러 본 연구대상 하수처리장의 일차침전지에서 대량으로 검출된 volatile fatty acids는 sludge bulking의 지표일 뿐 유일한 원인이 아니며 주원인은 낮은 용존산소하에서 정상적인 슬러지의 성장을 억제하거나 혹은 filamentous microorganisms의 과대성장을 촉진시키나 아직은 그 실체가 규명되지 않은 유기물이라고 사료된다.
