In an attempt to define the early biochemical determinants that participate in the pathogenesis of mercuric chloride-induced nephrotoxicity, especially focusing on oxygen free radicals, we studies malondialdehyde(MDA) level and catalase activity in renal cortex of the rats at 24, 48 and 72 hr after the injection of mercuric chloride. Wistar albino rats weighing 180 to 220gm were injected subcutaneously with mercuric chloride(HgCl₂, 2mg/kg). The result obtained can be summarized as follows: 1.The group treated with mercuric chloride showed significantly lower MDA level at 24, 48 and 72hr after the infection as compared to that of control group. 2.The group treated with mercuric chloride showed significantly higher catalase activity at 24hr and lower catalase activity at 72hr after the infection as compared to that of control group. These results suggest that the excessive oxygen free radicals resulting from the depression of catalase activity is an important determinant in pathogenesis of mercuric chloride-induced nephrotoxicity.

Due to globalization and the development of multimedia technology, the use of Korean-English subtitled movies and dramas has dramatically increased around the world, and especially through the Internet. However, the importance of Korean- English subtitling has been under appreciated in the field of translation. It is not difficult to find grammatically misused forms in Korean-English subtitled materials. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of Korean-English subtitling and the necessity of an academic use to subtitling and translating tasks. The subtitling errors in a selected Korean movie and drama currently available on Internet websites in the U.S. were collected and analyzed. Errors in he data were then divided into two groups: Grammatical Errors and Lexical Errors. This paper focuses on the grammatical errors, which were subcategorized into six grammatical groups: Articles, Pluralization, Capitalization, Prepositions, Verbs, and Pronouns. This study hopes to help reduce occurrence of the most common errors made by Korean translators in Korean-English subtitling.

Visual multimedia is believed for many years to be a great enhancement for teaching EFL classes, and the combination of both image and sound significantly helps in the achievement of the pedagogical goals of reading, writing, listening, and speaking English. The impact of captions and subtitles has been discussed for years, and many researchers have found them to be effective. Even so, agreement on them has not yet been attained. Some researchers claim that the use of captions and subtitles in film for the EFL classroom is better than presenting films without them. In contrast, others argue that non-captioned films are more beneficial than captioned ones in the EFL classroom. The purpose of this paper is to analyze, through in-depth study, whether the impact of using captions and subtitles in film is positive, or not, and to find ways to improve listening comprehension through film captioning and oral communication skill through subtitles. It is suggested that keyword captioning according to the level of proficiency and the order of caption use contribute to listening skill improvement, while reversed subtitling on TV improves oral skill. Furthermore, the need for cultural translation of subtitles is suggested.
A Study on the Relationship Between Multiple Intelligence and Listening Proficiency for EFL Leafners

In this study, the relationship between an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners`` Multiple Intelligence and their listening proficiency was investigated by giving 63 male and female undergraduate students from freshman to senior levels an actual TOEIC listening comprehension test and Multiple Intelligences questionnaire. Four main questions were examined in regard to Korean listeners of English as a Foreign Language:(l) "What are the most and the least used types of intelligences among EFL learners? (2) Is there any difference between male and female EFL learners in using different types of multiple intelligences? (3) Is there any relationship between EFL learners`` listening proficiency and their multiple intelligences? If so, what intelligences have relationship with EFL learners`` listening proficiency? (4) Do participants with what kind of intelligences have the most improvement? The findings indicate Interpersonal Intelligence, along with linguistic Intelligence, is a significant predictor of improved listening proficiency.
L2 Learner Corpus Analysis of Modal Expressions in Written Text

This study aims to compare different uses of epistemic modality used in both non-native texts (NNT) and native texts (NT) of writers based on the frequency of epistemic modality. In addition, there is an insightful exploration of how these different usage of modality should be tackled in order to foster the pragmatic competence of L2 learners in second language teaching and learning environment since the use of epistemic modality is a crucial area of pragmatic failure in the work of L2 learners. In order to answer the research questions, the range and frequency corpus program was used to show the total frequency of word usage including different types of epistemic modality. 180 NNT and 152 NT were collected and analyzed based on the categorization of epistemic modality. The study shows that can and should are prominent features, taking a higher frequency in NNT of writers among other modal expressions used. On the other hand, would and might are the ones much less used in comparison to ones in NT. In addition, NNT of writers tend to overuse a number of epistemic modality such as think, know, always, and a lot of, indicating the lack of awareness of using various types of epistemic modality particularly used by NT of writers such as would, might, seem, perhaps, likely and so on. This study also demonstrates a number of misused examples of epistemic modality which are corrected by native writers. These cases indicate the possibility of first language transfer and weak pragmatic competence of learners in second language learning environment.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The Korean government is planning an R&D project to convert existing small diesel trucks for parcel delivery services to diesel-electric hybrid trucks as part of its effort to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and particulate matter (PM). This project started from the realization that parcel delivery trucks have become one of the main sources of PM emissions especially as the parcel delivery service industry has rapidly grown in Korea amid inefficient driving environment for delivery trucks. To evaluate the marketability and feasibility of the project, this study analyzed diesel truck owners’ preferences for converting to hybrid vehicles. Hierarchical Bayesian choice-based conjoint analysis was employed to forecast conversion probabilities and willingness to pay for various vehicle attributes, and the influencing demographic factors were then analyzed. The demand forecasting results are expected to enable decision makers to set a reasonable budget for hybrid conversion. For policy implications, the findings suggest that truck owners should be allowed to pay for the conversion in installments, not in a lump sum, and it would be strategically effective to target the consumer segment that prioritizes fuel cost savings relative to other vehicle attributes to promote hybrid conversion.</P>

내과계 중환자실에 입원한 객혈 환자들에 있어 APACHE 3 점수 체계의 예후적 가치에 관한 연구

Background: Massive hemoptysis is one of the major medical emergency with high risk of mortality. Though the best predictor of mortality associated with hemoptysis appears to be the amount of bleeding within the first 24 hours, catastrophic hemorrhage could be occurred to the patients who were apparently in a stable condition with scanty hemoptysis at the time of admission. We evaluated APACHE III score system to find if it could be a prognostic index that can predict the mortality of the patients with hemoptysis. Methods : We identified all the patients who had admitted with hemoptysis in the Medical Intensive Care Unit of Asan Medical Center between May 25, 1989, and July 31, 1995. A retrospective analysis was done in 66 patients with hemoptysis on APA- CHE III score. Results: The overall mortality rate was 17.4% (12/69). In univariate analysis of possible prognostic factors, independent predictors of mortality were age(P=0.016), amount of hemoptysis(P=0.012), AaDO2 (P=0.017), requirement of transfusion(P=0.036), mechanical ventilatory care(P<0.05) and APACHE III score(P=0.02), In multivariate analysis with sex, age, amount of hemoptysis, AaDO2, requirement of transfusion and APACHE III score, APACHE III score was the only independent predictor of mortality(P=0.015, odd ratio=19.3, 95% confidence interval, 3.4 to 249.7) Conclusion: APACHE IU score may be a clinically significantly important independent predictor of outcome in the patients with hemoptysis. In addition, invasive procedure, such as bronchial artery embolizaticn or operation, could be considered in advance in the patients with more than 30 points of APACHE III.
