<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>β-carotene, a carotenoid that plays a key photo-protective role in plants is converted into zeaxanthin by β-carotene hydroxylase (CHY-β). Previous work showed that down-regulation of <I>IbCHY-β</I> by RNA interference (RNAi) results in higher levels of β-carotene and total carotenoids, as well as salt stress tolerance, in cultured transgenic sweetpotato cells. In this study, we introduced the RNAi-<I>IbCHY-β</I> construct into a white-fleshed sweetpotato cultivar (cv. Yulmi) by <I>Agrobacterium</I>-mediated transformation. Among the 13 resultant transgenic sweetpotato plants (referred to as RC plants), three lines were selected for further characterization on the basis of <I>IbCHY-β</I> transcript levels. The RC plants had orange flesh, total carotenoid and β-carotene contents in storage roots were 2-fold and 16-fold higher, respectively, than those of non-transgenic (NT) plants. Unlike storage roots, total carotenoid and β-carotene levels in the leaves of RC plants were slightly increased compared to NT plants. The leaves of RC plants also exhibited tolerance to methyl viologen (MV)-mediated oxidative stress, which was associated with higher 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity. In addition, RC plants maintained higher levels of chlorophyll and higher photosystem II efficiency than NT plants after 250 mM NaCl stress. Yield of storage roots did not differ significantly between RC and NT plants. These observations suggest that RC plants might be useful as a nutritious and environmental stress-tolerant crop on marginal lands around the world.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Transgenic sweet potato plants were generated by RNAi silencing of the <I>IbCHY-β</I> gene. </LI> <LI> Transgenic sweet potato plants had increased β-carotene and total carotenoid content. </LI> <LI> Transgenic sweet potato plants exhibited strong antioxidant capacity and salt stress tolerance. </LI> </UL> </P>

Cytomegalovirus is a frequent opportunistic pathogen in immunosuppressed patients and CMV colitis is one of its major complications. It usually presents as gastrointestinal ulceration with bleeding or perforation, but it can also take less common forms resembling many other entities, including viral gastroenteritis, ischemic colitis, intestinal pseudo-obstuction, toxic megacolon. We experienced a 49-year-old man with symptom of severe constipation and lower abdominal pain. He was diagnosed as having focal segmental glomerulosclerosis by renal biopsy, but he was an immunocompetent state. An abdominal X-ray showed marked dilatation of descending colon without air-fluid level. At colonoscopy and biopsy, he was diagnosed as having CMV colitis with focal stenosis. Treatment for two weeks with ganciclovir resulted in resolution of colitis, but stenosis was remained. We report a case of toxic megacolon and focal stenosis due to CMV colitis in a FSGS patient. It was not certain whether FSGS was related with immunosuppressive state.
Effect of Korean Medicine Treatments for Fat Pad Syndrome of Knee Joint: A Case Report

Fat pad syndrome is a knee joint condition/disease where acute or chronic inflammation occurs in the fat pad of the knee joint, and it is a cause of anterior knee pain. Fat pad syndrome usually occurs concurrently with other conditions/diseases to collectively cause anterior knee pain. No study to date has reported the treatment of anterior knee pain solely due to fat pad syndrome. Here, we report a case of fat pad syndrome of the knee joint as the sole cause of anterior knee pain in a 49-year-old woman who received integrated Korean medicine treatments (pharmacopuncture, acupuncture, herbal medicine, deep fascial meridian therapy, and chuna). Using patient-reported pain scale scores, the level of the patient’s pain was relieved, and her mobility improved. Integrated Korean medicine treatments could be effective for patients who have fat pad syndrome of the knee joint.
Status of Aircraft Bird Strikes at Airports in Korea

This study was carried out to secure basic data for a plan to reduce bird strikes by analysing information on collisions and bird species. We received 63 unidentified bird strike samples―for example, feathers, blood and tissue―from 8 airports in Korea from August 2009 to December 2010. We considered a bird strike sample as a case of bird strike, and used information on bird species that was identified by using DNA COI segments from the samples. Information was used on collisions from reports of bird strikes from airports and additional information collected from websites of KAC. From the results, 15 bird strikes occurred in Jeju airport and 8 bird strikes occurred in Gimpo airport. The occurrence of bird strikes was related to the number of aircraft movements in airports. However, we could not confirm the major bird strike species in each airport and also could not find the trend of the relation between the size of aircraft and occurrence of bird strikes. More bird strikes occurred during landing than takeoffs and engines made up the highest proportion of bird strikes. Seasonally, the occurrence of bird strikes was higher in October, September, November and May than in other months. This trend seems related to the patterns of the seasonal migration of birds. The daily pattern of bird strikes was higher in the morning and at sunset than at other times, and nocturnal birds were also struck at night time. This trend seems related to the daily patterns of birds.

The purpose of this study is to contribute to the consolidation of representative democracy in Korea by finding measures to increase voters participation in public elections through finding and comparing factors that have impacts on voter activeness and thus finding out the causes of voter abstention. In its preliminary analysis of eight extraneous variables’impact on voter participation, civic responsibility, interest in electoral campaign and voter convenience turned out to have significant impact. Of these three factors, voter convenience turned out to have the most significant impact. In its final analysis on voter self-efficacy, of human factors, civic responsibility and voter self-efficacy turned out to have moderating effects, with positive (+) impact on voter participation. This empirical study result seems to have significance in theorizing voter participation in Korea.
