For small capacity rectifier circuits such as these for consumer electronics and appliances, capacitor input type rectifier circuits are generally used. Consequently, various harmonics generated within the power system become a serious problem. Various studies of this effect have been presented previously. However, most of these employ switching devices, such as FETs and the like. The absence of switching devices makes systems more tolerant to over-load, and brings low radio noise benefits. We propose a power factor correction scheme using a LC resonant in commercial frequency without switching devices. In this method, it makes a sinusoidal wave by widening conduction period using the current resonance in commercial frequency, Hence the harmonic characteristics can be significantly improved, where the lower order harmonics, such as the fifth and seventh order are much reduced. The result are confirmed by the theoretical and experiment implementations.

Background/Aims: There are few available data regarding the association between the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the gene encoding interleukin 28B (IL28B) and a sustained virologic response (SVR) to peginterferon (PEG-IFN) plus ribavirin (RBV) therapy in Korean chronic hepatitis C patients. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of 156 patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who received combination treatment of PEG-IFN plus RBV. Blood samples from these patients were analyzed to identify the IL28B SNPs at rs12979860, rs12980275, rs8099917, and rs8103142. Association analyses were performed to evaluate the relationships between each IL28B SNP and SVRs. Results: Seventy six patients with HCV genotype 1 and 80 with genotype non-1 were enrolled. The frequencies of rs12979860 CC and CT genotypes were 90.4% and 9.6%, respectively; those of rs12980275 AA and AG genotypes were 87.2% and 12.8%, respectively; those of rs8099917 TT and TG genotypes were 92.3% and 7.7%, respectively; and those of rs8103142 TT and CT genotypes were 90.4% and 9.6%, respectively. Among the patients with HCV genotype 1, the SVR rates were 69.7% and 80.0% for rs12979860 CC and CT, respectively (P=0.71). Among the HCV genotype non-1 patients, SVR rates were 88.0% and 100% for rs12979860 CC and CT (P=1.00), respectively. Conclusions: Genotypes of the IL28B SNP that are known to be favorable were present in most of the Korean patients with chronic hepatitis C in this study. Moreover, the IL28B SNP did not influence the SVR rate in either the HCV genotype 1 or non-1 patients. Therefore, IL28B SNP analysis might be not useful for the initial assessment, prediction of treatment outcomes, or treatment decision-making of Korean chronic hepatitis C patients. In this paper we study oscillatory integrals with analytic homogeneous phase functions for smooth radial functions. We give their sharp asymptotic behavior in terms of spherical Newton distance.

In this study, we report the optimal extraction conditions for obtaining organosulfur compounds, such as cycloalliin, from garlic by using principal component analysis (PCA). Extraction variables including temperature (40∼80℃), time (0.5∼12 h), and pH (4∼12) were investigated for the highest cycloalliin yields. The cycloalliin yield (5.5 m㏖/mL) at pH 10 was enhanced by ∼40% relative to those (∼3.9 m㏖/mL) at pH 4 and pH 6. The cycloalliin level at 80℃ showed the highest yield among the tested temperatures (5.05 m㏖/mL). Prolonged extraction times also increased cycloalliin yield; the yield after 12 h was enhanced ∼2-fold (4 m㏖/mL) compared to the control. Isoalliin and cycloalliin levels were inversely correlated, whereas a direct correlation between polyphenol and cycloalliin levels was observed. In storage for 30 days, garlic stored at 60℃ (11 m㏖/mL) showed higher levels of cycloalliin and polyphenols than those at 40℃, with the maximum cycloalliin level (13 m㏖/mL) on day 15. Based on the PCA analysis, the isoalliin level depended on the extraction time, while cycloalliin amounts were influenced not only by extraction time, but also by pH and temperature. Taken together, extraction of garlic at 80℃, with an incubation time of 12 h, at pH 10 afforded the maximum yield of cycloalliin.

Purpose: To determine the activity and the toxicity associated with a low dose regimen of leucovorin (LV) plus 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) combined with oxaliplatin every two weeks (modified FOLFOX 4) as a salvage therapy for advanced gastric cancer patients.Materials and Methods: Between December 2003 and December 2004, 33 patients were enrolled in this study. The patients were treated with oxaliplatin 85 mg/m2 as a 2-hour infusion on the first day plus LV 20 mg/m2 over 10 minutes. Subsequently, the patients were given a 5-FU bolus 400 mg/m2 followed by a 22-hour continuous infusion of 600 mg/m2 on days 1∼2. The treatment was repeated at 2 week intervals.Results: The median age of the patients was 50 years (range: 31∼74), 82% (27/33) had the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status was 0 and 1. Of the30 patients who could be evaluated for their tumor response, 8 achieved a partial response, with an overall response rate of 26.7% (95% confidence interval (CI): 20.5∼32.7%). Fifteen patients (50%) showed stable disease and 7 patients (23.3%) progressed during the course of treatment. The median time from the start of chemotherapy to progression was 3.5 months (95% CI: 2.6∼4.4 months) and the median overall survival time was 7.9 months (95% CI: 5.9∼9.9 months). The major grade 3/4 hematological toxicity encountered included neutropenia (45.4%) and thrombocytopenia (3.0%). Neutropenic feveroccurred during only 2 of the 178 cycles. The most com - mon non-hematological toxicity encountered was grade 1/2 nausea/vomiting, which occurred in 18.2% of patients, diarrhea in 12.1% and neuropathy in 15.2%. There were no treatment related deaths.Conclusion: The modified FOLFOX 4 regimen appears to be a safe and effective salvage therapy for advanced gastric cancer patients. Atropine-induced atrial bigeminy during general anesthesia in a Cocker Spaniel dog

A 12-year-old female Cocker Spaniel (7.5 kg of body weight) was presented for resection of a mammary gland tumor. During surgery, the heart rate was remarkably decreased due to a second-degree type I atrioventricular block. Atropine (0.05 mg/kg) was administered to increase the heart rate. Although the heart rate was elevated, atrial bigeminy occurred and persisted until the dog fully recovered from general anesthesia. These results highlight the possibility of atrial bigeminy caused by atropine administration during anesthesia.
