Isolated Talonavicular Arthrodesis as an Option for Severe Rocker Bottom Foot Deformity: A Case Report

        Stephanie, Stephanie,Choi, Jun Young,Kumar, Abhishek,Suh, Jin Soo Korean FootAnkle Society 2015 대한족부족관절학회지 Vol.19 No.2

We report on a case of post-burn contracture and right foot deformity in a 37-year-old female who underwent two surgical interventions at the age of seven years. The patient remained well without any associated problems until she presented to our hospital at the age of 37 years with severe pain and right foot deformity. A few treatment modalities have been reported, and amputation has been suggested as the best approach. However, our patient was treated with a talonavicular arthrodesis and a soft tissue procedure, which resulted in a stable, plantigrade, and pain-free foot with an unsupported, bipedal gait.

Switching Behavior between Social Networking Sites

        Stephanie Polinar,Hong Joo Lee(이홍주),Jaewon Choi(최재원) 한국전자거래학회 2013 한국전자거래학회지 Vol.18 No.3

Considering the widespread use of social networking sites (SNSs) and the sudden shift of Filipino SNS usage from Friendster to Facebook, this paper examines five factors that affect user intentions to switch SNSs. By surveying switchers from Friendster to Facebook in the Philippines, satisfaction, alternative attractiveness, and social influence were significant factors affecting switching intent.

China`s ASAT Test and the Strategic Implications of Beijing`s Military Space Policy

( Stephanie Lieggi ),( Erik Quam ) 한국국방연구원 2007 The Korean Journal of Defense Analysis Vol.19 No.1

China`s test of an anti-satellite weapon in January 2007 was a surprise to the international community. China has recently made efforts to appear pragmatic in the international arena, which included consistent efforts to prohibit the weaponization of space. As a result of the test, Beijing has seen its international credibility slump and China may face a number of long-term challenges to its economic, political and strategic interests. The destruction of a non-functioning satellite by a Chinese missile created significant space debris that will likely plague satellites in the Earth`s orbit for some time to come. This may also have a negative affect on China`s ability to cooperate fully with other space-faring nations. Although Chinese diplomats have been longtime proponents of space arms control, China`s military analysts have taken another approach to the issue of space weapons. These analysts have examined the effect that U.S. space assets have had on recent conflicts and have identified military space development as essential for a modern military force. China`s recent test, however, has not only influenced its space rivalry with the United States, but may also be the impetus for a regional space race. If this is the case, China may have just started a space race that it has been trying to avoid and cannot afford.

      • A CONCEPTUAL MODEL OF ANTECEDENTS, MODERATORS AND OUTCOMES OF CONSUMER CONFINEMENT IN AIRLINE TRAVEL

        Stephanie Feiereisen,Thorsten Hennig-Thurau,Vincent-Wayne Mitchell 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2016 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2016 No.7

The passenger airline industry is worth $623 billion, transporting around 3,530 million passengers a year (IATA, 2015). Although useful, most prior research focuses only on specific situations and on a minority of passengers, and takes a producercentric view which conceptualizes consumers as the target of airline activities (Reisinger and Movondo, 2005, Wangenheim and Bayón, 2007, Folkes et al., 1987, Bejou and Palmer, 1998). Instead, we focus on a characteristic of airline travel that affects all airline consumers: confinement. Airline consumers are often confronted with restrictions in terms of space and activity which can lead to discomfort, frustration, dissatisfaction, and reduced well-being. The objectives of this study are therefore to: 1) Define the concept of consumer confinement, 2) Develop a model showing how the problems faced in confined contexts, solution strategies used to deal with these, moderators and outcomes are related, 3) Show how confined airline experiences can be managed more effectively to improve consumer and company outcomes. In understanding how companies and consumers play a role in avoiding and reducing these, we investigate how consumers become problem solvers and deal with confinement using a thematic analysis of blogs and forums. Our study shows that long-haul travellers face a wide range of problems and have developed inventive, personalized solution strategies to address these. We also develop a conceptual model which identifies the problems faced by consumers such as boredom and not looking good; moderators such as propensity to plan and claustrophobia; potential confinement solution strategies consumers and companies can action, such as talking with other passengers and watching movies; and how these may affect company and consumer outcomes such consumer emotions, satisfaction and loyalty. The paper contributes to theory development in marketing by conceptualizing confinement, which has received very limited attention in prior work (see Chen, Gerstner, and Yinghui, 2009 for an exception). Second, we build on prior work on negative service experiences, such as the effect of overbooking service capacity (Wangenheim and Bayón, 2007) and service failure (Folkes, Koletsky, and Graham, 1987) that took a more producer-centric view, conceptualizing consumers as the recipient of the company’s activities. We extend and go beyond this work by showing that consumers are actually active co-solvers of their consumption experience problems (Prahalad and Ramaswamy, 2004). Third, our conceptual model provides theoretical relationships between confinement and company as well as consumer outcomes such as satisfaction, emotions and loyalty to show how effective strategies are used to help consumers reduce the problems caused by confined situations. Fourthwe contribute to an understanding of the boundary conditions of when strategies work by showing that in particular, individual differences such as fear of flying could have an effect on the effectiveness of strategies. Fifth, we complement the travel medicine and the general travel literature which has researched travel risk and anxiety (Reisinger and Movondo, 2005) and physical health problems resulting from flying phobias (McIntosh et al., 1998), with a focus on the more common problems and strategies used by the large majority of long-haul flyers to occupy time and improve emotional well-being. We conclude with suggestions for further research.

Turning Hepatic Cancer Stem Cells Inside Out – A Deeper Understanding through Multiple Perspectives

        Stephanie Ma,Lok-Hei Chan,Steve T. Luk 한국분자세포생물학회 2015 Molecules and cells Vol.38 No.3

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a highly malignant disease and the third leading cause of all cancer mortalities worldwide, often responses poorly to current treatments and results in dismal outcomes due to frequent chemoresistance and tumor relapse. The heterogeneity of HCC is an important attribute of the disease. It is the outcome of many factors, including the cross-talk between tumor cells within the tumor microenvironment and the acquisition and accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations in tumor cells. In addition, there is accumulating evidence in recent years to show that the malignancy of HCC can be attributed partly to the presence of cancer stem cell (CSC). CSCs are capable to self-renew, differentiate and initiate tumor formation. The regulation of the stem cell-like properties by several important signaling pathways have been found to endow the tumor cells with an increased level of tumorigenicity, chemoresistance, and metastatic ability. In this review, we will discuss the recent findings on hepatic CSCs, with special emphasis on their putative origins, relationship with hepatitis viruses, regulatory signaling networks, tumor microenvironment, and how these factors control the stemness of hepatic CSCs. We will also discuss some novel therapeutic strategies targeted at hepatic CSCs for combating HCC and perspectives of future investigation.

Epithelial-microbial diplomacy: escalating border tensions drive inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease

        Stephanie J King,Declan F McCole 대한장연구학회 2019 Intestinal Research Vol.17 No.2

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic conditions of the gastrointestinal tract-the main site of host-microbial interaction in the body. Development of IBD is not due to a single event but rather is a multifactorial process where a patient’s genetic background, behavioral habits, and environmental exposures contribute to disease pathogenesis. IBD patients exhibit alterations to gut bacterial populations “dysbiosis” due to the inflammatory microenvironment, however whether this alteration of the gut microbiota precedes inflammation has not been confirmed. Emerging evidence has highlighted the important role of gut microbes in developing measured immune responses and modulating other host responses such as metabolism. Much of the work on the gut microbiota has been correlative and there is an increasing need to understand the intimate relationship between host and microbe. In this review, we highlight how commensal and pathogenic bacteria interact with host intestinal epithelial cells and explore how altered microenvironments impact these connections.
