We experienced a case of acute pyelonephritis which progressed to Escherichia coli bacteremia and later complicated by empyema in a 65-year-old female. She was successfully treated with intravenous antibiotic therapy and percutaneous drainage of empyema.
방역작업자의 브롬화메틸(methyl bromide) 노출수준과 생물학적 모니터링

This study was performed to estimate environmental and biological monitoring of worker exposed to methyl bromide through quarantine fumigation. Airborne methyl bromide and it's metabolites were analyzed by gas chromatography and ion chromatography, respectively. The results are as followings; airborne concentration of methyl bromide(TWA) was 2.08±1.56 ppm(N=8). Dispersion and setting/degas groups were 0.67±0.12 ppm(N=2) and 2.54±1.53ppm(N=6), respectively. Bromide ion concentration in serum was 23.40±14.91㎎/ℓ(N=10) in the exposed workers and 4.74±0.82㎎/ℓ(N=21) in the non-exposed workers. Bromide ion concentration in urine was 35.56±26.89㎎/ℓ(N=11) in exposed group and 6.62±2.31㎎/ℓ(N=21) in non-exposed group. Good correlation was observed between concentration of serum and urine(r^2=0.890 p<0.01). No significant correlations of other determinanats were observed. Calcuated from a regressive curve. the biological half lifes of serum and urine were 10.7 and 5.9 days. In these results, biological monitoring of bromide ion of serum and urine provided useful information for evaluating exposure of workers to methyl bromide, so that an availability of bromide ion of biological samples was showed as biological monitoring indices for methyl bromide.

HClO₄(pH:2) 수용액에서 양극산화 방법으로 HgMnTe(HMT)의 표면에 산화막을 형성 시켰다. 산화막의 두께는 SEM으로 측정하였으며 10㎛였다. 전류-전압 특성곡선을 얻어 산화 피크 전압으로부터 HTeO₂?, TeO?, HHgO₂? 막이 형성되었음을 알 수 있었다. 산화시키지 않은 HMT와 HClO₄수용액에서 산화시킨 HMT에 대해 Hall전압 및 자기저항을 각각 측정하였다. 홀전압과 자기저항은 HMT보다 HMT산화막에서 더 컸으며 이것은 HHgO₂? 공격자가 홀의 역할을 하고, TeO₄? 산화막은 전하의 포획도를 낮게하기 때문으로 생각할 수 있다. Anodic oxidation processes on HgMnTe surface has been studied in standard aqueous HClO₄(pH:2) solution. The 10㎛ thickness of the anodic oxide layers was measured by SEM. The Composition of the anodic oxide layers are evaluated from current-voltage(I-V) characteristic of HgMnTe Oxidation. The layers are composed of mixed oxide. ??, TeO₄, and?? in HClO₄solution. Transport properties have been investigated in HMT oxide layer made in HClO₄solution and virgin HMT samples at 300K. Hall voltage and magnetoresistance are greater in oxide layer HMT than virgin HMT. As a result, we know that the vacancy of ??in an anodic oxide layer acts as hole and the resulting oxide ?? layer exhibit a reduced degree of charge trapping and increase magnetoresistance.

Epidemiological studies suggest that 30-50% of patients diagnosed with symptomatic congestive heart failure(CHF) have electrocardiographic evidence of a major intraventricular conduction delay, which may worsen left ventricular systolic and diastolic dysfunction through asynchronous ventricular contraction and paradoxical interventricular septal wall motion. Biventricular pacing is an emerging therapy allowing simultaneous electrical stimulation of the both ventricles with an implantable pacing system and it improves hemodynamics and well-being of patient by reducing ventricular asynchrony. Recently, we underwent biventricular DDD pacemaker implantation in a patient with CHF and Left bundle branch block and was significantly improved exercise tolerance and quality of life in that patient.

The industries use polymer materials for many purposes because they have many merits. But these materials' costs take up too much proportion in overall cost of products that use these materials as their major material. So it is very economical for polymer industries to reduce these costs. Microcellular foaming process appeared in 1980's to solve this problem and it proved to be quite successful. This process uses inert gases such as CO2, N2. As these gases are dissolved into polymer matrices. many properties are changed. Glass transition temperature is one of these properties. DSC, DMA are devices that measures this temperature, but these are not sufficient to measure the temperature of polymer containing gas. In this paper, we devised a new tester that uses magnetism. We used this device to acquire data of the change of glass transition temperature and made Cha-Yoon model that can predict the change of glass transition temperature. Using this model, the change of this temperature can be estimated as a function of weight gain of gas. Cha-Yoon model proved that Chow's model is inappropriate to predict the change of glass transition temperature of polymer matrices containing gas.

The enzyme, squalene synthase, represents a branch point in the isoprenoid pathway capable of diverting carbon flow specifically to the biosynthesis of phytosterol and Triterpenoid. Transgenic Eleutherococcus senticosus plants were prepared by introducing the genes for squalene synthase derived from Panax ginseng (PgSS1), hygromycin phosphotransferase (HPT) and green fluorescent protein (GFP) through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Establishment of transgenic plantlets were confirmed by the presence of PgSS1 and HPT bands in the genomic DNA preparation using a PCR method and a Southern blotting. In addition, expression of the introduced GFP DNA was confirmed by observing green fluorescence of GFP from the embroyos. In the in vitro analysis of the PgSS1 enzymatic activities the transgenic plants showed to have 1.5 to 3 times higher than wild type plant, indicating that the PgSS1 genes was well over-expressed in the transgenic plants. Especially the PgSS1 acivities of embroyogenic cell was 120 times higher than those of plantlet.

The dissociation constants of phenol and o-chlorophenol were measured by emf method and compared the effects of temperature and pressure with the ordinary state. The constants are varies with the temperature and pressure, i.e. those values are increased as the both temperature and pressure increased. As the hydrogen ion reversible electrode, antimony oxide electrode is qualified until pressure to 2,000 bar in ordinary temperature but at 35℃ only to 1,500 bar. From the observed constants, various thermodynamic properties are calculated and discussed on the dissociation reaction.
