Antiadhesive effect and safety of oxidized regenerated cellulose after thyroidectomy

Purpose: To evaluate the antiadhesive effects and safety of an oxidized regenerated cellulose (Interceed) after thyroidectomy. Methods: Seventy-six thyroidectomized patients were prospectively randomized into two groups with regard to the use of Interceed. We evaluated each group for their adhesive symptoms using four subjective and four objective items at the 2nd week, 3rd and 6th month after thyroidectomy. All patients were examined for vocal cord motility by indirect laryngoscope at each period. Results: Total adhesion scores at each postoperative follow-up period decreased with time, but were not significantly different in each group. The median score for swallowing discomfort for liquid was significantly lower in the Interceed group than in the control group 2 weeks after surgery. In addition, the severity of skin adhesion to the trachea was reduced in the Interceed group compared with the control group 6 months after surgery. During the study, there were no adverse effects or significant differences in postoperative complications between the groups. Conclusion: Interceed appeared to be safe and effective in improving neck discomfort at early postoperative periods and preventing skin adhesion to the trachea 6 months after thyroidectomy.

An epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) is a type I transmembrane protein expressed in the majority of normal epithelial tissues and overexpressed in the human epithelial cancers including breast cancer. Treatment with plant-derived anti-EpCAM mAb (mAbr COK) and Raw264. 7 cells inhibited cell growth in the human breast cancer cell line MCF -7. In MCF-7 treated with mAbr COK and Raw264.7 cells, expression of p53 and p21 increased, whereas the expression of G1 phase-related protein, cyclin D1, CDK4, cyclin E and CDK2 decreased. In addition of treatment with mAbP COK and Raw264. 7 cells decreased the expressiOn of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2, but the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins Bax, TNF-u, caspase-3, caspase-6 and caspase-9, increased. Moreover, cells treated with mAbr COK and Raw264. 7 cells expressed metastasis-related gangliosides GM1 and GD1a. These results suggest that mAbr COK has an effect on anti-cancer activity.
Damping-off of Coastal Hogfennel Caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG-4

Damping-off symptoms were frequently observed on young plants of coastal hogfennel (Peucedanum ja- ponicum) grown in a farmer’s vinyl greenhouse located in Goseong, Gangwon Province, Korea during a dis- ease survey in June 2019. Incidence of the diseased plants was 50-70% in the vinyl greenhouse investigated during the disease survey. Eight isolates of Rhizoctonia sp. were obtained from the diseased plants. All the isolates were identified as Rhizoctonia solani AG-4 based on the morphological characteristics and anastomo- sis test. Three isolates of R. solani AG-4 were tested for pathogenicity on coastal hogfennel by artificial inocu- lation. All the tested isolates induced damping-off symptoms on the inoculated plants. The symptoms were similar to those observed in the farmer’s vinyl greenhouse investigated. This is the first report of R. solani AG-4 causing damping-off in coastal hogfennel.
Damping-off of Indian Lettuce Caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG-4

Damping-off symptoms were frequently observed on young plants of Indian lettuce (Lactuca indica) grown in a farmer's vinyl greenhouse located in Goseong, Gangwon province of Korea during a disease survey in June 2019. 장수풍뎅이는 우리나라 곤충 산업에서 학습애완곤충으로 활용도가 매우 높으며 전국적으로 많은 농가에서 사육 되고 있다. 최근 식용, 약용으로도 허가가 되어 농가의 수가 확대되고 있고, 대부분 번식 개체 암수 비율 증가(2:1 이상), 대형 상자, 대량의 발효톱밥을 이용하여 번식을 한다. 이는 몇몇 농가들에게는 경제적 비용을 늘리는 요인이 되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 비용 절감 방안을 모색하고자, 칸막이 사육 상자를 고안하여 한 쌍으로만 실내 번식(온도 25℃, 습도 60%)을 실시하였다. 조사 결과, 칸막이가 없는 사육 상자에서 평균 산란수는 93.6개였고, 칸막이가 있는 처리구의 경우에는 평균 산란수가 121.3개로 칸막이가 없는 것보다 알을 더 많이 낳는 경향을 보였다. 또한, 발효톱밥의 경도가 높은 처리구에서 산란을 더 많이 하는 경향을 보였다.
Recycling of Al–Si die casting scraps for solar Si feedstock

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Recycling of aluminum die-casting scraps for solar-grade silicon (SOG-Si) feedstock was performed successfully. 3N purity Si was extracted from A383 die-casting scrap by using the combined process of solvent refining and an advanced centrifugal separation technique. The efficiency of separating Si from scrap alloys depended on both impurity level of scraps and the starting temperature of centrifugation. Impurities in melt and processing temperature governed the microstructure of the primary Si. The purity of Si extracted from the scrap melt was 99.963%, which was comparable to that of Si extracted from a commercial Al–30wt% Si alloy, 99.980%. The initial purity of the scrap was 2.2% lower than that of the commercial alloy. This result confirmed that die-casting scrap is a potential source of high-purity Si for solar cells.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Al die-casting scraps represent a source for high-purity Si. </LI> <LI> High-purity Si could be extracted by combined centrifugation and solvent refining. </LI> <LI> The purity of Si is determined by the impurity level and the rotation start temperature. </LI> <LI> The purity of Si extracted from scrap was comparable to that of Si extracted from commercial alloy. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>At sufficiently low supersaturations such that the spiral growth mechanism dominates, β-cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) grows from acetone into a polyhedron surrounded mainly by the (020) and (011) faces. In order to elucidate the morphology, a generalized form of the interfacial structure analysis model is suggested. In this method, the molecular order parameters of crystals are defined to identify the orientation and conformation of the adsorbed growth unit at the interface. This presents a robust method to calculate the orientational and conformational free energy surfaces that are utilized for the spiral growth model of centrosymmetric growth units with polygonal spiral edges. From the metadynamics simulation using these order parameters as collective variables, the free energy surfaces with respect to the collective variables revealed that high conformational free energy of the chair conformation discouraged preordering of the growth units into crystal-like orientation and conformation. The resulting morphology was consistent with the previous experimental and theoretical results, indicating that the anisotropic local concentrations of the growth units at the interface play a critical role in the different relative growth rates of the slow-growing faces.</P><P>The orientation and conformation of a β-cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) molecule at the interface can be identified using order parameters that distinguish crystal-like molecules. Using metadynamics with the order parameters revealed that all the adsorbed molecules act as equivalent growth units. The prediction of the morphology using the anisotropic concentration of these growth units with the spiral growth model exhibited consistency with the experimental morphology of the β-HMX crystal.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
