최근 목구조의 규모제한이 폐지되면서 중대형 목조건축 시장이 확대될 것으로 기대된다. 그러나 5층 이상 건축의 경우 2시간 내화구조가 필요하지만 목구조는 2시간 내화구조가 없어 모두 고비용 장시간의 내화구조 인정절차를 받아야 한다. 본 연구에서는 내화구조 인정절차를 간소화하기 위해 철골구조에서 사용하는 폼형 내화피복도료와 같이 목구조에도 내화를 전적으로 담당하는 내화피복설계를 적용해보고자 하였다. 내화피복설계가 가능하려면 구조부인 목구조가 화염에 의한 구조적 손실이 없어야 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 화재에 버티는 방화석고보드 외에 목구조의 표면을 화염으로부터 보호하기 위한 목섬유단열재를 적용하여 내화피복에 의한 2시간 내화성능을 확보하고자 하였다. CLT 벽체의 일반적인 내화피복방식은 방화석고보드에 유리섬유를 적용하는 방식이다. 개선된 피복방식으로 방화석고보드에 목섬유를 적용하여 표준화염조건에서 2시간 내화시험을 진행하였다. 기존 유리섬유를 활용한 내화피복 방식은 내화성능은 확보하였지만 구조부가 일부 탄화되어 내화피복설계는 적용할 수 없는 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 19㎜방화석고보드 2매와 30㎜목섬유단열재를 적용한 CLT 벽체는 2시간 내화성능을 발휘하면서 목재 표면의 구조적 손상이 나타나지 않아 내화피복설계 가능성을 확인하였다.

Microbial exopolysaccharide (EPS) is a biothickener that can be added to a wide variety of food products, where it serves as a viscosifying, stabilizing, emulsifying, and gelling agent. The objective of this study was to investigate the optimum conditions of pH, incubation temperature, and whey protein concentration (WPC) for EPS production by Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 9595. We found that maximal EPS production was achieved at a pH of 5.5 and temperature of 37℃. At the same fermentation conditions, EPS production was affected by the addition of L. rhamnosus GG (a weak-EPS producer). After growth for 24 hr, total EPS production was 583±15.4 mg/L in the single culture system, and 865±22.6 mg/L in the co-culture system with L. rhamnosus GG. Based on the presence of WPC, EPS production dramatically increased from 583±15.4 (under no WPC supplementation) to 1,011±14.7 mg/L (under supplementation with 1.0% WPC). These results suggest that WPC supplementation and the co-culture systems coupled with small portions of weak-EPS producing strain can play an important role in the enhancement of EPS production.
Initial Experience of High-Volume Plasma Exchange In Patients with Acute Liver Failure

Aims: High-volume plasma exchange (HVP) defined as exchange of 8-12 or 15% of ideal body weight with fresh frozen plasma has shown promising results in improving survival of patients with acute liver failure (ALF). However, real-life clinical evidences are still limited. The aim of this study was to report our initial experience of using HVP as a bridge treatment in patients with ALF. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 32 consecutive patients who were enlisted for liver transplantation (LT) due to ALF between 2013 and 2020 at Samsung Medical Center in Korea. HVP was initiated in patients with ALF since May 2016 at our institution. Results: During study period, 16 Patients received HVP. After HVP, coagulopathy (prothrombin time, INR, 4.46 [2.32-6.02] vs. 1.48 [1.33-1.76], P<0.05), total bilirubin (22.6 [9.1-26.4] vs. 8.9 [5.6-11.3], P<0.05), ALT (506 [341-1963] vs. 120 [88- 315], P<0.05), and ammonia level (130.6 [123.7-143.8] vs 98.2 [84.2-116.5], P=0.033) were improved. Improvement in hepatic encephalopathy grade was observed in four patients, including three case of spontaneous recovery. The overall survival was better in patients who received HVP than that in patients who did not receive HVP (survival rate: 93.8% vs. 68.8% at 30 days) without overlap in survival curve between the two groups, although the difference between the two was statistically marginal (P=0.068). Among 18 patients with high SOFA score (≥13), the overall survival was significantly better for those who received HVP than those did not (90.9% vs. 28.6%, P=0.003). Conclusions: Initial clinical experience with HVP suggests that HVP can be a viable option to improve outcome for patients presenting with ALF, especially for those with high SOFA score.
Anticancer activity of lactoferrin isolated from caprine colostrum on human cancer cell lines

<P><I>In the present study, lactoferrin was purified from caprine colostrum and its anticancer effects were investigated on various cancer cell lines, including lung, colon, cervix, stomach and breast cancer cells. The caprine lactoferrin (CLF) was purified by ultrafiltration and sequential chromatography using a CM-Sephadex C-50-120 ion-exchange column and affinity chromatography on Hi-Trap<SUP>TM</SUP> Heparin HP. The purified CLF exhibited antiproliferative effects on the five tested cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner, with 20–30% survival as compared to the control. Interestingly, the most intense inhibition of cell growth was observed on the ZR-75-1 breast cancer cells (IC<SUB>50</SUB> = 27.5 µg/mL). Our findings suggest, for the first time, that purified CLF from caprine colostrum may constitute a novel anticancer agent for the food industry.</I></P>

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of mixed starter cultures isolated from kimchi on physicochemical properties, functionality and flavors of fermented ham. Physicochemical properties, microbial counts, shear force, cholesterol contents and volatile compounds of fermented ham were investigated during processing (curing and ripening time). Curing process for 7 d increased saltiness, however, decreased hunter color values (L, a, and b values). Ripening process for 21 d increased most parameters, such as saltiness, color values, weight loss, shear force and cholesterol content due to the drying process. The mixed starter culture had higher lactic acid bacteria than the commercial one. While eight volatile compounds were identified from fermented hams during curing process, total fiftyeight volatile compounds were identified from fermented hams during ripening process. The main volatile compounds were alcohols, esters and furans. However, no differences in volatile compounds were observed between two batches. Fermented hams (batch B) manufactured with probiotic starter culture (LPP) had higher sensory score in texture, color and overall acceptability than counterparts (batch A), while the opposite trend was observed in flavor. Therefore, mixed probiotic starter culture isolated from kimchi might be used as a starter culture to be able to replace with commercial starter culture (LK-30 plus) for the manufacture of fermented ham.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>In this paper we consider weighted arithmetic and geometric means of higher orders constructed by the symmetrization method appeared in Ando–Li–Mathias’s definition of multi-variable geometric means and the arithmetic–geometric mean inequality of higher order weighted version. We establish a converse inequality of higher order weighed arithmetic and geometric means via Specht ratio.</P>

The original geometric mean of two positive definite operators A and B is given by <italic>A</italic>#<italic>B</italic> = <italic>A</italic><sup>1/2</sup>(<italic>A</italic><sup>-1/2</sup><italic>BA</italic><sup>-1/2</sup>)<sup>1/2</sup><italic>A</italic><sup>1/2</sup>. In this article we provide a new proof to construct from the two-variable geometric mean to the multivariable mean via symmetrization introduced by Lawson and Lim [5]. Finally we provide an algorithm to find three-variable geometric mean via symmetrization, which plays an important role to construct higher-order geometric means.

<P>Many pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli O157:H7, can control gene expression in a cell density-dependent manner by producing small signaling molecules (autoinducers) in a process known as quorum sensing. In this study, the effects of the autoinducer-2-like activity on the expression of proteins, including virulence factors, in E. coli O157:H7 were characterized by proteomic analysis. Compared with the control, E. coli O157:H7 strains in the presence of autoinducer-2-like activity exhibited elevated virulence by more rapidly forming cell aggregates on epithelial cells and rapidly killing the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, the surrogate host. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis revealed 18 proteins that were upregulated by autoinducer-2-like activity and 4 proteins that were down-regulated. These proteins were further characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and are involved in the metabolic process, adaptation and protection, cell motility, secretion, envelope biogenesis, and protein translation. These results indicate that the newly identified proteins are associated with the control of virulence in E. coli O157:H7 and that these proteins can be potential targets for the development of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents.</P>
