Background: Studies have shown that arterial stiffness is an independent predictor of cardiovascular diseases. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an independent risk factor for early death. It is caused by malignant ventricular arrhythmias due to ventricular hypertrophy. In this study we aimed to investigate the relationships between arterial stiffness parameters and electrocardiographic criteria for LVH. Methods: A total of 59 subjects (30 females, 29 males) were included into the study. The subjects were the patients having arterial stiffness and electrocardiographic measurements applied in the internal medicine out-patient clinics for their chronic diseases or based upon their complaints. Results: The pulse wave velocity (PWV) was signifi cantly associated with Sokolow-Lyon ‘II’ (r=0.269; p=0.041) and the central aortic pressure (CAP) was signifi cantly associated with Sokolow-Lyon ‘II’ and Romhilt-Estes Score (r=0.303; p=0.021 and r=0.275; p=0.037, respectively) in whole group. The augmentation index of aortic (AIXao) was signifi cantly associated with Sokolow-Lyon ‘II’ (r=0.381; p=0.042) in men. The CAP was signifi cantly associated with Sokolow-Lyon ‘II’, Cornell Product and Romhilt-Estes Score (r=0.524; p=0.004, r=0.402; p=0.031 and r=0.444; p=0.016, respectively) in women. Conclusions: These data suggest that some arterial stiffness parameters may be predicted by using R wave amplitude of aVL derivation. Although our small scale preliminary investigation confers some clues for this approach, it is obvious that large scale and more detailed investigations are needed.

Considering the low rate of dipping, the presence of an evening dose seems to be important in elderly hypertensive women when arranging the treatment for their hypertension. In monotherapy, divided doses will be rational.

The partial least squares (PLS-1) calibration model based on spectrophotometric measurement, for the simultaneous determination of sulfite and sulfide is described. This method is based on the difference between the rate of the reaction of sulfide and sulfite with Malachite Green in pH 7.0 buffer solution and at 25 ${^{\circ}C}$. The absorption kinetic profiles of the solutions were monitored by measuring the decrease in the absorbance of Malachite Green at 617 nm in the time range 10-180 s after initiation of the reactions with 2 s intervals. The experimental calibration matrix for partial least squares (PLS-1) calibration was designed with 24 samples. The cross-validation method was used for selecting the number of factors. The results showed that simultaneous determination could be performed in the range 0.030-1.5 and 0.030-1.2 $\mu$g m$L ^{-1}$ for sulfite and sulfide, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to simultaneous determination of sulfite and sulfide in water samples and whole human blood.

Purpose: We hypothesized that the central dislocation of the femoral head does generally not occur in transverse acetabular fractures, although it does usually occur in both column fractures. Material and Methods: Fifty-two transverse and both column acetabular fracture cases were evaluated retrospectively. The distances between (a) the sciatic notch on the fracture side and the vertical axis of the pelvis (VA line) and (b) the contralateral intact sciatic notch and the VA line were measured. The a/b ratio corresponded to the superior iliac segment displacement or rotation. The ratio of the distance between the fracture side femoral head and the VA line (c) and the distance between the contralateral intact femoral head and the VA line (d) corresponded to the femoral head displacement. The width of ischium (e) on fractured side and (f) contralateral side were measured. The e/f ratio increment reflected ischiadic fragment mobility. Results: The median value of femoral head displacement (c/d) of the transverse fracture group (n=25) was 1.02 (1.000-1.07). Ischiadic fragment rotation (e/f ratio) of the transverse fracture group was 1.000. The median value of femoral head displacement (c/d) of the both column fractures (n=27) was 0.78 (0.64-0.85). Ischiadic fragment rotation (e/f ratio) of the both-column group was 1.15 (1.06-1.23). The differences between groups according to measurements were statistically significant. Conclusion: In contrary to Letournel description, our findings showed no medialization of femoral head in transverse acetabular fractures in general. This might be an illusion resulting from external rotation of the superior iliac segment.

In this study, the effects of various ratios of cow milk to soy milk (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100) and three types of commercial culture composition (ABY- 1, MY-720, and YO-Mix 210; all of them containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis, and yogurt cultures) on the biochemical, microbiological, and sensory characteristics of a probiotic fermented composite drink during incubation and refrigerated storage were investigated. It was found that the shortest fermentation time, greatest mean pH drop rate, and mean acidity increase rate were related to the 50:50/ABY treatment. 25:75/ABY and 25:75/MY treatments exhibited the highest viability of B. bifidum and/or L. acidophilus at the end of 21 days of refrigerated storage. The influence of the type of starter culture composition on the sensory properties of the final products was not significant. Based on microbial and sensory evaluations, using the 50:50 ratio with each type of culture composition was considered as the most suitable treatment.
