<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study investigates the flexural behavior of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) with single and hybrid steel fibers. To do this, three different types of steel fibers, i.e., hooked, twisted, and straight fibers, were considered, and a UHPFRC commercially available in North America was used as a comparison. To suggest a low-cost UHPFRC exhibiting the best flexural performance, test data and cost of fibers were analyzed based on a literature review. Test results indicate that straight steel fibers provide the best flexural performance, including strength, deflection capacity, energy absorption capacity, and cracking behavior, compared with hooked and twisted fibers, especially when many fibers (2% by volume) were incorporated. Hybrid reinforcement (hooked+straight fibers) efficiently improved the flexural performance of the UHPFRC with single hooked fibers, but the twisted+straight fibers were less effective than the UHPFRC with single twisted fibers. The optimum UHPFRCs contained 2vol% single straight steel fibers (l<SUB>f</SUB>/d<SUB>f</SUB> of 19.5/0.2) or hybrid 0.5vol% long (l<SUB>f</SUB>/d<SUB>f</SUB> of 30/0.3) and 1.5vol% medium-length (l<SUB>f</SUB>/d<SUB>f</SUB> of 19.5/0.2) straight steel fibers; they showed better flexural strength and cost effectiveness than other types of UHPFRCs.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The use of S fibers is most efficient in improving flexural performance of UHPC at <I>v<SUB>f</SUB> </I> of 2%. </LI> <LI> Hybrid H and S fibers are effective in improving flexural performance of UHPFRC with single H fibers. </LI> <LI> Hybrid T and S fibers are less efficient in terms of flexural performance than single T fibers. </LI> <LI> The optimum UHPFRC mixture is suggested in terms of flexural strength and cost effectiveness. </LI> </UL> </P>

We have previously shown that the inhibition of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling induced endodermal gene expression in the animal cap and caused the expansion of the endodermal mass in Xenopus embryos. However, we still do not know whether or not the alteration of FGF signaling controls embryonic cell fate, or when FGF signal blocking is required for endoderm formation in Xenopus. Here, we show that FGF signal blocking in embryonic cells causes their descendants to move into the endodermal region and to express endodermal genes. It is also interesting that blocking FGF signaling between fertilization and embryonic stage 10.5 promotes endoderm formation, but persistent FGF signaling blocking after stage 10.5 restricts endoderm formation and differentiation.
Expression Analysis of caspase-6, caspase-9 and BNIP3 in Prostate Cancer

<P>AIMS: Altered regulation of cell death is a feature of human cancer. The aim of this study was to explore whether the expression of the proapoptotic proteins caspase-6, caspase-9, and Bcl-2/adenovirus E1B-19kDa-interacting protein3 (BNIP3) is altered in prostate cancers. METHODS: We analyzed the expression of caspase-6, caspase-9, and BNIP3 in 107 prostate adenocarcinoma tissues by immunohistochemistry using a tissue microarray (TMA) method. RESULTS: Normal glandular cells expressed caspase-6 and BNIP3 proteins in 10 (9.3%) and 9 (8.4%) prostate tissues, respectively. By contrast, the prostate cancers expressed caspase-6 and BNIP3 in 65 (60.7%) and 69 (64.5%) cases, respectively. Prostate intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) showed caspase-6 and BNIP3 expression in 65% and 65% of cases, respectively. We observed caspase-9 expression in 40 (37.4%) normal, 8 (40%) PIN, and 45 (42.1%) cancer tissues. None of the expression of caspase-6, caspase-9 or BNIP3 was associated with pathological characteristics such as tumor size, patient age, Gleason score, or tumor stage. CONCLUSION: Our data showed that prostate cancer and PIN cells display higher expression of the proapoptotic proteins caspase-6 and BNIP3 than normal cells. Neo-expression of these proteins from the PIN stage suggests that apoptosis deregulation might occur in the early stage of prostate carcinogenesis, and that altered expression of proapoptotic proteins may be a feature of prostate cancer.</P>
Bookbuilding, Price Revision and Initial Returns of IPOs

This study examines how public information, disclosed bookbuilding information, and private information is reflected in price revisions. Using a very unique hand-collected dataset for the IPOs in Korea from January 2000 to December 2007, we have found market returns and institutional investors’ demand for IPOs affect revision of offer prices. We find evidence that underwriters partially reflect private information in offer prices, especially positive idiosyncratic shocks not explained by market conditions or institutional investors’ subscription for IPO. Such asymmetric partial adjustment of private information in price revisions explains initial returns of IPOs. In addition, we also find that market making requirement does not affect the nature of partial adjustment of information. These results are robust even when we control for other characteristics of IPOs.
Real-time News Video Indexing with Multi-modal Features

In this paper, an efficient real-time indexing algorithm for news video is presented. We adopted several multi-modal lowlevel features, which are selected after observing the audio-visual characteristics of news programs, in order to detect an anchor shots in news video. The overall structure of the proposed algorithm is composed of four stages: the pause detection, the fillin and throw-away processing, the audio classification, and the matching with motion activity stage. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is quite acceptable while satisfying the constraint of real-time.

Allergic skin inflammation such as atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by edema and infiltration with various inflammatory cells such as mast cells, basophils, eosinophils and T cells. Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is produced mainly by epidermal keratinocytes, as well as dermal fibroblasts and mast cells in the skin lesions of AD. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish oil can reduce inflammation in allergic patients. Fermentation has a tremendous capacity to transform chemical structures. The antiinflammatory effects of fish oil have been described in many diseases, but the beneficial effects by which fermented olive flounder oil (FOF) modulates the allergic response is poorly understood. In this study, we produced FOF and tested its ability to suppress the various allergic inflammatory responses. The ability of FOF to modulate the immune system was investigated using a mouse model of AD. The FOF-treated group showed significantly decreased immunoglobulin E (IgE) and histamine in serum. Also, the increased TSLP expression was significantly inhibited in the FOF group; the FOF-treated group was not appreciably different from the hydrocort cream treatment group. In addition, FOF treatment resulted in a smaller spleen size with reduced the thickness and length compared to the induction group. Splenocytes from mice treated with FOF produced significantly less IFN-γ, IL-4, T-box transcription factor (T-bet) and GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) expression compared with the induction group. These results suggest that FOF may be effective in treating the allergic symptoms of AD. 5.
CONSUMER STUDIES : A Study of Green Claims in Korean Consumer Market

Consumer perception of the meaning of ``green`` and ``green products`` as well as how they use green claims (including terms, certifications, and marks) should be examined to help consumers pursue green behavior in everyday life. This study investigates what type of green claims prevail in the Korean consumer market and how consumers perceive the meaning of ``green`` and green claims. For these purposes, media analysis, in-context research (shop visit) and a survey were conducted to collect green claims (including green terms and certified/noncertified green marks). Green claims in the consumer market were first summarized and analyzed; subsequently, the most frequently used 7 green marks and 15 green terms were selected to construct a consumer survey questionnaire on consumer perceptions of green claims. An online survey was performed via Embrain and the survey respondents consisted of 500 adult consumers over the age of 20. The field research results showed frequent green claims in the Korean consumer market. However, certified (and hence trustworthy green product information labels) were uncommon in the market. The only green claim widely known and used by consumers was the energy consumption efficiency label. Consumers were interested in the green information label not because it affected their utility cost nor because it was important for environment protection.
