Vol.4 No.2
Characterization of Melon necrotic spot virus Occurring on Watermelon in Korea
Kwak, Hae-Ryun,Kim, Jeong-Soo,Cho, Jeom-Deog,Lee, Joong-Hwan,Kim, Tae-sung,Kim, Mi-Kyeong,Choi, Hong-Soo The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2015 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.31 No.4
Melon necrotic spot virus (MNSV) was recently identified on watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) in Korea, displaying as large necrotic spots and vein necrosis on the leaves and stems. The average occurrence of MNSV on watermelon was found to be 30-65% in Hapcheon and Andong City, respectively. Four isolates of the virus (MNSV-HW, MNSV-AW, MNSV-YW, and MNSV-SW) obtained from watermelon plants in different areas were non-pathogenic on ten general indicator plants, including Chenopodium quinoa, while they infected systemically six varieties of Cucurbitaceae. The virus particles purified by 10-40% sucrose density gradient centrifugation had a typical ultraviolet spectrum, with a minimum at 245 nm and a maximum at 260 nm. The morphology of the virus was spherical with a diameter of 28-30 nm. Virus particles were observed scattered throughout the cytoplasm of watermelon cells, but no crystals were detected. An ELISA was conducted using antiserum against MNSV-HW; the optimum concentrations of IgG and conjugated IgG for the assay were $1{\mu}l/ml$ and a 1:8,000-1:10,000 dilutions, respectively. Antiserum against MNSV-HW could capture specifically both MNSV-MN from melon and MNSV-HW from watermelon by IC/RT-PCR, and they were effectively detected with the same specific primer to produce product of 1,172 bp. The dsRNA of MNSV-HW had the same profile (4.5, 1.8, and 1.6 kb) as that of MNSV-MN from melon. The nucleotide sequence of the coat protein of MNSV-HW gave a different phylogenetic tree, having 17.2% difference in nucleotide sequence compared with MNSV isolates from melon.
Transgenic crops for sustainable agriculture in marginal areas
Vol.2007 No.11
The dramatic increase in population accompanied by rapid industrialization in developing countries including China has caused imbalances in the supply of food and energy. To cope with these global crises over food and energy supplies as well as environmental problems, it is urgently required to develop industrial GM crops to be grown in marginal lands including desertification and polluted lands for sustainable agriculture. Recently we developed several tansgenic crops such as sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam), potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) expressing genes of both Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase in the chloroplasts under the control of an oxidative stress-inducible peroxidase (SWPA2) promoter (referred to SSA plants). SSA plants showed a strong tolerance to oxidative stress caused bythe application of methyl viologen (MV, paraquat), a ROS-generating non-selective herbicide. SSA sweetpotato plants showed higher tolerance to chilling stress than non-transgenic (NT) plants, whereas SSA potato plants showed higher tolerance to high temperature. SSA sweetpotato plants showed a strong tolerance to the application of sulfur dioxide (500 ppb) compared to NT plants. Enhanced tolerance of transgenic crops expressing NDP kinase 2 in cytosols under SWPA2 promoter (SN plants) to environmental stress will be introduced. In addition, the strategies for sustainable agriculture in marginal areas will be discussed

Maternal Social Separation of Adolescent Rats Induces Hyperactivity and Anxiolytic Behavior
Kwak, Hyong-Ryol,Lee, Jae-Won,Kwon, Kwang-Jun,Kang, Chang-Don,Cheong, Il-Young,Chun, Wan-Joo,Kim, Sung-Soo,Lee, Hee-Jae The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2009 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.13 No.2
Exposure to early stressful adverse life events such as maternal and social separation plays an essential role in the development of the nervous system. Adolescent Sprague-Dawley rats that were separated on postnatal day 14 from their dam and litters (maternal social separation, MSS) showed hyperactivity and anxiolytic behavior in the open field test, elevated plus-maze test, and forced-swim test. Biologically, the number of astrocytes was significantly increased in the prefrontal cortex of MSS adolescent rats. The hyperactive and anxiolytic phenotype and biological alteration produced by this MSS protocol may provide a useful animal model for investigating the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders of childhood-onset diseases, such as attention deficient hyperactive disorder.
Foreign body reaction due to hair
( Sang-woo Park ),( Eui-sung Jung ),( Hyun-bin Kwak ),( Soo-kyung Park ),( Jin Park ),( Seok-kweon Yun ),( Han-uk Kim ) 대한피부과학회 2018 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.70 No.1
Substances such as hair that can penetrate the skin can potentially cause a cutaneous foreign body reaction. A segment of hair from the scalp or beard tends to penetrate better. Hairdressers frequently present with such lesions on their hands. A few cases of pilonidal sinus, abscess, and foreign body granulomas caused by hair have been reported. Herein, we report a case of cutaneous papule on a finger in a hairdresser. A 57-year-old woman presented with a tender papule on her finger that had developed over 6 months. Physical examination revealed a 3.0´3.0-mm skin colored, dome shaped papule on the lateral side of the left third finger. The patient complained of stinging pain when touching the papule. Dermoscopy revealed a black dot in the middle of the papule. We recommended a biopsy; however, the patient refused and decided to have the black spot removed. The hair like material was easily pulled out with forceps. Histological feature of the material was compatible with normal hair structure. The papule disappeared after removing the hair segment. No complication or recurrence was observed during the 1 month after tumor removal.
