        Description of Janiralata sagamiensis (Isopoda, Asellota, Janiridae) from Korean Waters

        Janirid isopod, Janiralata sagamiensis Shimomura, 2006 is newly reported from Korean waters. This species can be distinguishable from its congeners by the following characteristics: the cephalon has a distinct anterolateral projection on the anterolateral margin; the frontal margin of the cephalon is lacking rostrum; the coxal plates are visible in dorsal view; the pleotelson is rounded distally without a posterolateral point; the first pleopod of the male has a pair of protrusions distally; the third pleopodal exopod is lacking plumose setae. In this paper, the detailed description and illustrations of the species are provided with a key to known Janiralata species in the surrounding waters of Korea, including China and Japan.

        Total Hip Arthroplasty Using Two-Incision Technique

        Background: To evaluate the effectiveness of minimally invasive surgery total hip arthroplasty (THA) using the two-incision techniqueas described by Mears. Methods: From January 2003 to December 2006, sixty-four patients underwent total hip arthroplasty using the one-incision (groupI) and two-incision (group II) technique by one surgeon. There were 34 hips in group I and 30 hips in group II. There was no differencein age, gender, and causes of THA between the two groups. We evaluated the operation time, bleeding amount, incisionlength, ambulation, hospital stay, and complications between the two groups. Results: There was no difference in the bleeding amount between the two groups. Operation time was longer in the two-incisiongroup than in the one-incision group. Operation time of the two-incision technique could be reduced after 15 cases. Patients startedambulation after surgery earlier in group II than group I, and the hospital stay was shorter in group II than in group I. There wasno difference in clinical results between the two groups. There was no difference in component position of the acetabular cup andfemoral stem between the two groups. Intraoperative periprosthetic fracture occurred in four cases (13.3%) in group II. Conclusions: Two-incision THA has the advantage of rapid recovery and shorter hospital stay. However, longer operation timeand a high complication rate compared to one-incision are problems that need to be solved in the two-incision technique.

      • Flavored candy drops can improve the patient’s compliance when taking PEG solution for colonoscopy

        Background and Aims: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) based solution has been widely used for bowel cleansing before colonoscopy. The main disadvantages of this preparation were its large volume and poor palatability. Recently, PEG with ascorbic acid was developed for low-volume and better taste. However, this method still requires moderate amount of volume and has brought just a little taste improvement. We aimed to investigate whether adding various kinds of flavored candy drops can improve the pateints’ compliance and the quality of bowel cleansing when taking 4-L, split-dose, PEG with ascorbic acid solution for colonoscopy. Methods: Single center, randomized study was performed during May to November 2014. A total of 120 patients were prospectively enrolled. The patients were classified into 3 groups. (40 control group, 40 menthol candy group, and 40 cherry flavored candy group.) All patients received colonoscopy using split-dose PEG ascorbic acid preparation method. In the candy drops added group, patients were provided 10 candy drops and instructed to suck on a candy while drinking the split-dose PEG solution. To investigate the compliance and palatability, a questionnaire was performed before colonoscopy. Quality of preparation, remaining unconsumed volume, and side effects were also investigated. Results: The mean palatability score and patient compliance were significantly better in both candy drops users versus controls. Patients with cherry candies complained of fewer side effects such as nausea or abdominal fullness than the menthol group. Quality of colon preparation was also significantly better in the both flavored candy groups than the controls. Cherry candy group achieved the best preparation quality. Conclusions: Flavored candy drops can improve the taste and patient’s compliance when taking PEG solution, and are associated with better bowel cleansing. It seems taking flavored candy drops based on a patient’s preference when taking PEG solution is a safe and easy method to enhance the quality of bowel preparation.

        The Effect of Information Flow from Futures Market on the Volatility of Spot Stock Market

        본 연구에서는 한국주식시장의 변동성에 관한 두 가지 실증적 측면을 정보 흐름의 관점에서 평가하였다. 첫째, KOSPI 200 지수선물거래가 현물시장의 변동성에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 더미변수접근법을 이용한 분석 결과, 지수선물거래의 도입이 현물시장의 변동성을 증가시켰다는 결론을 얻었다. 둘째, KOSPI 200 선물시장과 현물시장 사이의 변동성 전이를 GARCH-BEKK 모형을 이용하여 분석하였다. 실증분석 결과, 선물시장과 현물시장 변동성 사이에는 한 방향의 인과관계가 존재한다는 것을 발견하였다. 즉 선물시장에서 현물시장에로의 변동성 전이가 강한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 KOSPI 200 선물시장이 현물시장보다 새로운 정보에 더 빨리 반응하며, 또 투기적 거래 때문에 KOSPI 200 선물시장이 현물시장을 지배한다는 것을 의미한다. In this paper, we evaluated two empirical aspects of the volatility of Korean stock market in the context of information flow. First, we investigated the impact of KOSPI 200 index futures trading on the volatility of its spot market. Using a dummy variable approach, we determined that the introduction of index futures trading increases spot market volatility. Second, we examined the volatility spillover between the KOSPI 200 spot and futures markets, using the bivariate GARCH-BEKK model. The results indicate the presence of unidirectional causality from futures to spot markets. This means that the KOSPI 200 futures market reacts to new information more quickly than its underlying spot market, and the KOSPI 200 futures market dominates its spot market, as the result of speculative trading.

        Anti-diabetic Effects of Ethanol Extract from Bitter Melon in Mice Fed a High-fat Diet

        Present study aimed to determine the effect of 'bitter melon', a popularly used fruit in Bangladesh and several other Asian countries, on high-fat-diet-induced type 2 diabetes. To investigate the effect, ethanol extract from bitter melon (BME) as a dietary supplement with mouse chow was used. BME was found to significantly attenuate the high-fat diet (HFD) -induced body weight and total fat mass. BME also effectively reduced the insulin resistance induced by the HFD. Furthermore, dietary supplementation of BME was highly effective in increasing insulin sensitivity and reducing hepatic fat and obesity. These results indicate that BME could be effective in attenuating type 2 diabetes and could therefore be a preventive measure against type 2 diabetes.

        Effects of AIF on Knee Osteoarthritis Patients: Double-blind, Randomized Placebo-controlled Study

        Anti-inflammatory factor (AIF) is a water soluble extract of three herbs, Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F. H. Chen, Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch and Eleutherococcus senticosus. The present study aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of herb extracts, AIF, on Korean knee osteoarthritis patients for six weeks. Fifty seven patients with knee osteoarthritis, ranging from 43 to 73 years of age, who fulfilled the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) classification of idiopathic osteoarthritis of knee and radiographic criteria were randomly selected and enrolled for the study. After initial screening and resting period, two capsules each of AIF (Each capsule contains; 400 mg) and similar identical placebo were administered twice a day to both groups. Pain intensity at second, fourth, and sixth weeks of study as well as one week after discontinuation of drugs was assessed by using 100 mm visual analogue scale (VAS). Changes in the Korean version of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (K-WOMAC) index score were compared at the initiation and completion of the study. VAS assessed by patients were significantly reduced (at visit 2; 54.64±14.72, at visit 4, 37.32±16.58, p<0.001) after AIF administration. Results showed an improvement in the physical function of K-WOMAC scale which was significantly higher (p=0.013) in AIF than placebo group, and decreases of total K-WOMAC score were also significantly higher (p=0.030) in AIF groups than placebo group. No serious adverse effect was observed, and there was no difference in incidence of adverse effect between AIF and placebo groups. In this population of Korean patients with knee osteoarthritis, AIF was found to be safe, tolerable and effective for symptomatic improvement of pain and physical function.

      • AA′-Stacked Trilayer Hexagonal Boron Nitride Membrane for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

        <P>Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and graphene have emerged as promising materials for proton exchange membranes because of their high proton conductivity and chemical stability. However, the defects and grain boundaries generated during the growth and transfer of two-dimensional materials limit their practical applicability. Here, we report the fabrication of membrane electrode assemblies using large-area single-oriented AA′-stacked trilayer h-BN (3L-BN), which exhibits very few defects during the growth and transfer, as a proton exchange membrane for use in fuel cell systems. The fuel cell based on AA′-stacked 3L-BN showed a H<SUB>2</SUB> permeation current density as low as 2.69 mA cm<SUP>-2</SUP> and an open circuit voltage (OCV) as high as 0.958 V; this performance is much superior to those for cells based on Nafion (3.7 mA cm<SUP>-2</SUP> and 0.942 V, respectively) and single-layer h-BN (10.08 mA cm<SUP>-2</SUP> and 0.894 V, respectively). Furthermore, the fuel cell with the AA′-stacked 3L-BN membrane almost maintained its original performance (OCV, maximum power density, and H<SUB>2</SUB> permeation current density) even after 100 h of an accelerated stress test at 30% RH and 90 °C, while the fuel cells with the Nafion and single-layer BN membranes exhibited severely deteriorated performances. The stability of the cell based on the AA′-stacked 3L-BN membrane was better because the membrane prevented gas crossover and suppressed the generation of reactive radicals during cell operation.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Cloning and Heterologous Expression of a Ca<sup>2+</sup>-Activated Chloride Channel Isoform from Rat Brain

        <P>We previously reported the cloning of a calcium-activated chloride channel (CLCA) from rat brain (<I>Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun.</I>, 334, 569—576 (2005)), which we designated rbCLCA1. We further showed that rbCLCA1 is expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral organs, and may be functionally expressed in mammalian HEK293 cells. In the present study, we report the successful cloning of a second CLCA from rat cerebrum (designated rbCLCA2), using reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) with primers specific for rbCLCA1. We have begun to clone this cDNA based on the rbCLCA1-like sequence. The full-length rbCLCA2 cDNA, obtained <I>via</I> 5′ and 3′ rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE), is 2900 bp long and encodes a putative polypeptide of 905 amino acids having at least two major transmembrane domains and showing 85.2% identity to rbCLCA1. RT-PCR analysis revealed that, similar to rbCLCA1, rbCLCA2 was predominantly expressed in the rat cerebrum, cerebellum, kidney, stomach, spinal cord, lung and small intestine, but not in the heart, large intestine, liver, orand spleen. Whole-cell patch clamp studies in HEK293 cells transiently co-transfected with expression vectors encoding rbCLCA2 and EGFP allowed us to identify the presence of niflumic acid (a CLCA channel blocker)-sensitive and voltage-dependent chloride currents in cells expressing rbCLCA2 but not EGFP alone. Treatment of these cells with ionomycin, a Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> ionophore, significantly increased the novel currents in cells expressing rbCLCA2 and EGFP, but not those expressing EGFP alone, indicating that activation of the rbCLCA2 current is Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>-dependent. In sum, we herein report the cloning of a second member of the rbCLCA family from rat brain and its functional expression <I>in vitro</I>, thus adding to our knowledge of anion channels and facilitating future exploration of brain and other organ physiology.</P>

        Background: Current guidelines suggest the criteria for discontinuation of nucleos(t)ide analogues (NA) in selected patients. However treatment induced virological response is not permanent. Aim of our study is to evaluate the clinical significance of HBsAg titer in predicting sustained virologic response after NA therapy discontinuation. Methods: From Jun 1998 to Dec 2010, medical record of 81 chronic hepatitis B patients who discontinued NA was analyzed retrospectively. Sustained virologic response (SVR) was arbitrarily defined as undetectable HBV DNA by real-time PCR(with lower limit of detection of 116 copies/mL, 20 IU/mL) persisted more than 12 months after treatment discontinuation. Results: Median age was 51 years, 54 (67%) patients were male, and 50 (62%)patients were HBeAg positive. Median baseline ALT, HBV DNA and HBsAg were 292 IU/mL, 7.1log10 IU/mL and 3.3log10 IU/mL. NA were lamivudine (n=53), adefovir (n=15), lamivudine combined with adefovir (n=4), and entecavir (n=9). Median treatment duration and follow-up period were 26 and 27 months. 11/81 (14%) patients had SVR. The cumulative relapse rates were 37/81 (46%) at 6 months and 42/81 (52%) 12 months after treatment discontinuation. The baseline ALT, HBV DNA and presence of HBeAg were not different between patients with or without SVR. In univariate analysis, age, treatment duration and HBsAg level at treatment discontinuation were different in patients with or without SVR; 51 vs. 43 years, p=0.033; 53 vs. 25 months, p=0.011; 2.1 vs. 3.3log10 IU/mL, p=0.003. In multivariate analysis, only HBsAg level at treatment discontinuation remained as an independent factor associated with SVR (p=0.019). The cutoff value of HBsAg level <2log10 IU/mL was predictive of SVR [(AUROC, 0.991; 95% confidence interval[CI], 0.000-1.000; p<0.05); sensitivity, 100%; specificity, 93%; positive predictive value, 69%; negative predictive value, 100%]. Conclusions: Large proportion of patients treated with oral antivirals relapsed after the treatment discontinuation. In the decision of the treatment discontinuation, HBsAg level <2log10 IU/mL at treatment discontinuation can predict sustained viral suppression in selected patients.
