Genomic structure of the Aeromonas bacteriophage pAh6-C and its comparative genomic analysis.

<P>pAh6-C is a virulent bacteriophage (phage), isolated from a river in Korea, that infects a multiple-antibiotic-resistant A. hydrophila strain, JUNAH. The double-stranded DNA genome of pAh6-C is composed of 53,744??bp with a G + C content of 52.83??%. The genome encodes 86 putative ORFs, four putative promoters, and seven transcriptional terminator regions. Genome sequence analysis of pAh6-C and comparative analysis with the homologous Shewanella phage Spp001 revealed that there is a high degree of similarity between pAh6-C and Spp001 in 50 of the 86 ORFs of pAh6-C. The results of this investigation indicate that pAh6-C is closely related to Spp001, especially in the genes coding for proteins involved in DNA metabolism.</P>
Risk factors for high neonatal serum magnesium concentrations in prenatal maternal magnesium therapy

Objective: The main purpose of this study is to analyze the risk factors for high neonatal serum magnesium concentrations in prenatal maternal magnesium therapy. Methods: This was a retrospective study that employed the electronic medical record systems of seven tertiary care centers under the College of Medicine, the Catholic University of Korea, from January 2009 to March 2021. This study was approved to use registry data and documentation of informed consent was waived by our Institutional Review Board (XC20WIDI0103/2020-2158-0020). Mothers who received antenatal magnesium sulfate for neuro-protection or eclampsia prophylaxis were included. This study evaluated mother-neonate pairs with each having one documented magnesium concentration measured from the blood. Results: A total of 877 mother -neonate pairs of magnesium concentration were obtained. Mothers of neonates with high neonatal magnesium concentrations (>4.5mg/dL) had high maternal magnesium concentrations, lower GFR, lower gestational age at delivery, and were more like to have preeclampsia. Conclusion: We have identified several predictors of neonatal serum magnesium concentrations that can guide maternal magnesium dose.

Gradual mortality of look down fish (Selene vomer) was observed in a private aquarium in Seoul, showing abnormal swimming behavior and lethargy. A bacterial pathogen from kidney was cultured, identified, and confirmed as Vibrio harveyi using Vitek System 2 and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. A predominant bacterial strain, SNUVh-LW2 was proved to be most closely related to isolates from China by phylogenetic analysis with minimum evolution method. Also, tetracycline was considered as the most sensitive antibiotic agent via antibiotic susceptibility test. The group of fish was treated according to the diagnostic result and no more mortality was observed.

N/A We analysed 255 cases of acute drug intoxication in patients who were admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine, Chun An Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital from January 1983 to December 1987. The following results were obtained: 1) The most common drugs were agricultural chemicals in 197 cases (77%), the remainder were hypnotics in 21 cases (8%), rodenticides and chemicals in 13 cases (5%), each, and unknown drugs in 9 cases (4%), in order of frequency. 2) The overall sex incidence ratio was 1.63 male to 1 female with a male preponderance and patients were most commonlyaffected in the 3rd decade (30%). Monthly incidence was highest in July and there was an increasing tendency in the number of cases admitted annually. 3) The causes of intoxication were suicidal attempts in 137 cases (54%), unknown in 97 cases (38%), accidental intoxication in 18 cases (1%), in order of frequency. 4) The highest mortality was observed in patients of organophosphorous and paraquat intoxicalion. The mortality rate was 95% in paraguat intoxication and 79% in organophosphorous intoxication. 5) In cases of organophosphorous intoxications, the mortality rate was 78% in 3 days after acute intoxication and 73% for paraguat intoxication in the same period. 6) The most common cause of death was respiratory failure (76%) in organophosphorous intoxication and respiratory failure (48%) and renal failure (45%) in paraquat intoxication.

In the current study, a total of 102 common Todarodes pacificus squid caught in the East Sea were investigated for parasitological research. The results revealed that 33 (32.35%) out of 102 squid were infected by Nybelinia surmenicola, the mean intensity was 5.58 parasites per squid, and the maximum abundance was 11. Morphological analysis using a field emission scanning electron microscope showed the characteristic features of N. surmenicola. Molecular identification based on the 28S rRNA gene confirmed the isolated parasite as N. surmenicola, while phylogenetic analysis revealed that N.surmenicola isolated in this study was clustered with N. surmenicola isolated from Japan. This is the first report of phylogenetic characterization of N. surmenicola isolated from Korea.
