Myocardial infarction produces significant abnormal liver functioning. In the present study the hepatoprotective effect of tincture of Crataegus (TCR) in myocardially infarcted rats was investigated. The oral administration of TCR to rats for 30 days afforded good protection against isoproterenol-induced alterations in tissue marker enzymes of liver injury like alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferease, lactate dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase and in proteinbound carbohydrates like hexose, hexosamine, fucose, and sialic acid. The protective effect of TCR was further supported by the reversal of isoproterenol-induced histological changes in the liver. The results suggest that TCR, which can protect the heart and circulatory system, can also be hepatoprotective and thereby maintain the near normal architecture of liver tissue.

Rubia cordifolia Linn, which belongs to the Rubiaceae family, is a well-known herb used in Ayurvedic medicine. In the present study, we investigated the influence of a methanolic extract (RC) on the induction of apoptosis in HEp-2 (human laryngeal carcinoma) cell line, as evidenced by cytotoxicity, morphological changes and modification in the levels of pro-oxidants. Inhibition of cell proliferation and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release increased in a time and dose-dependent manner. Further, reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione transferase (GST) and protein levels decreased and lipid peroxidation increased significantly on RC treatment in a dose dependent manner when compared to controls. Based on the results we determined the optimal dose as 30mg/ ml and the apoptotic effect of RC extract (30 mg/ml) on HEp-2 cells was confirmed by fluorescent microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) based on morphological and ultrastructural changes. RC extract suppressed the proliferation of HEp-2 oral cancer cells inducing apoptotic cell death in vitro. These results point to potential of RC extract as an agent for the treatment of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
Inhibitory Effect of Bacopa monniera on morphine Induced PharmacologicalEffects in Mice

effects of the alcoholic extract of Bacopa monniera (BMA) on morphine-induced pharmaco-logical activities were studied in mice. Oral administration of the extract (40 mg/kg) significantly inhibitedmorphine-induced analgesic tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, hyperactivity, reverse tolerance, Dopamine receptorsupersensitivity and apo-morphine-induced climbing behaviour in mice. The results of this study showed that,alcoholic extract of Bacopa monniera (BMA) exerted inhibitory efect against morphine-induced pharma-cological effects, suggesting that the extract could be useful in the treatment of morphine toxicity.KeywordsBacopa monniera, morphine toxicity, hyperactivity, analgesic tolerance, supersensitivity, climbingbehaviour
