<i>SPITZER</i>AND HEINRICH HERTZ TELESCOPE OBSERVATIONS OF STARLESS CORES: MASSES AND ENVIRONMENTS

<P>We present Spitzer observations of a sample of 12 starless cores selected to have prominent 24 mu m shadows. The Spitzer images show 8 mu m and 24 mu m shadows and in some cases 70 mu m shadows; these spatially resolved absorption features trace the densest regions of the cores. We have carried out a (CO)-C-12 (2-1) and (CO)-C-13 (2-1) mapping survey of these cores with the Heinrich Hertz Telescope (HHT). We use the shadow features to derive optical depth maps. We derive molecular masses for the cores and the surrounding environment; we find that the 24 mu m shadow masses are always greater than or equal to the molecular masses derived in the same region, a discrepancy likely caused by CO freezeout onto dust grains. We combine this sample with two additional cores that we studied previously to bring the total sample to 14 cores. Using a simple Jeans mass criterion, we find that similar to 2/3 of the cores selected to have prominent 24 mu m shadows are collapsing or near collapse, a result that is supported by millimeter line observations. Of this subset at least half have indications of 70 mu m shadows. All cores observed to produce absorption features at 70 mu m are close to collapse. We conclude that 24 mu m shadows, and even more so the 70 mu m ones, are useful markers of cloud cores that are approaching collapse.</P>

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology. We noticed a series of patients who were diagnosed with rosacea as well as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), for which they used a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask. This case series aims to give insight in the possible relationship between rosacea and the use of a CPAP mask for OSAS. We present five patients with OSAS who developed or worsened rosacea symptoms after use of a CPAP mask covering nose and mouth. Two patients showed centrofacial symptoms consistent with the shape of the CPAP mask; three patients had nasal cutaneous symptoms. It is postulated that the occlusive effect of the CPAP mask, increasing skin humidity and temperature, can induce primary symptoms in patients with an underlying sensibility for rosacea. This could have implications for choice of CPAP mask type and topical therapeutic options for rosacea. (Ann Dermatol 32(3) 247∼250, 2020)
Feasibility of non-invasive recording of somatosensory evoked potential in pigs

Background: Non-invasive measurement of somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEP) in a large animal model is important to translational cognitive research. We sought to develop a methodology for neurophysiological recording via a transcranial electroencephalography (EEG) cap under an effective sedative regimen with dexmedetomidine, midazolam, and butorphanol that will produce sedation instead of anesthesia while not compromising data quality. Results: Pigs received intramuscular dexmedetomidine, midazolam, and butorphanol for SEP assessment with peroneal nerve stimulation. Semi-quantitative sedation assessment was performed after the animal was sufficiently sedated and 30 min later, during the transcranial SEP recording. SEP data were analyzed with commercial software. Binary qualitative analysis of the recording was categorized by an experienced neurophysiologist. All four animals had adequate surface SEP recordings. Animals received 43 [21–47] mcg/kg of dexmedetomidine, 0.3 [0.2–0.3] mg/ kg of midazolam, and 0.3 [0.3–0.3] mg/kg of butorphanol IM. All treatments resulted in moderate to deep sedation (Baseline median sedation score 11.5 [11–12]; median score at 30 min: 11.5 [10.5–12]). Heart rate (median [range]) (55 [49–71] beats per minute), respiratory rate (24 [21–30] breaths per minute), and hemoglobin oxygen saturation (99 [98–100]%) and body temperature (37.7 [37.4–37.9] °C) remained within clinically acceptable ranges. There were no undesirable recovery incidents. Conclusions: In this pilot study, we demonstrate the feasibility of SEP recording via a transcranial EEG cap under an effective sedative regimen in pigs. Our approach will expand the use of a large animal model in neurotranslational research.
