A 7-month old. castrated male Shih-tzu dog was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University with history of depression. dyspnea. mild scale. tachypnea. exercise intolerance and severe leanness. On physical examination. cardiac arrhythmias was heard and heart worm ELISA test was positive. Microfilaria was found on the direct blood smear. Survey radiographs showed loss of diaphragmatic line and cardiac silhouette. displacement of lung fields and presence of gas filled intestines in the thoracic cavity. Rib fracture and pelvic fracture with callus formation were found incidentally. On the basis of physical examination and radiographic findings. it was diagnosed as traumatic diaphragmatic hernia and heart worm disease. Herniorrhaphy was performed. Postoperatively. it was treated for heart worm disease and scale. There is no evidence of recurrence of diaphragmatic hernia and heart worm disease over 1 year.

The estrogenic potency of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) using reverse transcriptase-PCR response of liver vitellogenin mRNA in male African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) was studied. Male frogs were injected with DEHP at dose of 300 ㎍/kg and 300 mg/kg body weight through the dorsal lymph sac. After 4 days, using suitable pair of RT-PCR primers, vitellogenin mRNA induction in the liver was measured and DEHP showed vitellogenin mRNA induction in only the group treated with 300 mg/kg. Any significant histological abnormalities by the exposure of DEHP was not shown in both testis and liver.

To evaluate the arsenic effect of fish endocrine disruption, crucian carp (Carassius auratus) were treated with 0.5 mg/L and 3.0mg/L of As₂O₃ for 14 days and gonadal development was examined by histological analysis. In ovaries from female crucian carps exposed to 3.0mg/L, immature follicles and atretic follicles were appeared while various normal developmental stages of oocytes were shown in control group. Body weight and Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) of treated carp were also decreased compared to control group. However, no other significant histological changes in liver or kidney were shown in this exposure scheme, This means that reproductive organs are more sensitive than other organs and arsenic may exert endocrine disrupting effect through inhibiting the development of reproductive organ in fish.

This study was conducted to determine the contents of heavy metals in leaves of roadside trees according to different growth stages in Daegu city. The orders of heavy metal contents in leaves of roadside tree and soil were Fe〉Mn〉Zn〉Pb〉Cu〉Cr〉Cd and Fe〉Mn〉Zn〉Cu〉Pb〉Cr〉Cd, respectively. The contents of heavy metals in leaves of roadside trees and soil showed an increasing tendency as the levels of traffic volume increased. The contents of heavy metals in leaves on October were higher than those on May.
UHF Chipless Tag Design and Practical Structure Based on High-Q Resonance Characteristics
Seong-Hwan Kang,Jung-Han Kim,Hyeong-Hwan Roh,Jun-Seok Park 대한전자공학회 2010 ICEIC:International Conference on Electronics, Inf Vol.1 No.1
Many efforts have been dedicated to construct the RFID?based logistics system that is applicable to ubiquitous environment; an alternative strategy to reduce the manufacture cost is foremost issue. The cost of the tag chip motivated us to highlight the alternative solution in this paper. I present a chipless tag to reduce the tag manufacture costs, and comparatively robust to the physical damage. The chipless tag, which can be considered as an RF barcodes, consists of only patterned conductor; much faster, easier, cheaper process of producing the tag in much simplified cycle what we expect. The basic operation of the proposed chipless tag can be: the reader transmits a set of continuous wave signals, and the proposed chipless tag backscatters each reader signal via different reflection ratio. If two frequency signals (e.g., freq#1 and freq#2) approach the proposed chipless tag, freq#1 should be reflected while freq#2 shorted to the ground (this can be vice versa). Overall, the difference of received signal levels can be the tag ID. The proposed chipless tag can be inside of the product box since the RF power can wade through the box materials (e.g., paper box); thus, more effective security can be guaranteed.
Natural Compounds from Danshen Suppress the Activity of Hepatic Stellate Cells
Oh, Seong-Hwan,Cho, Kyung-Hwan,Yang, Beom-Seok,Roh, Yong-Kyun The Pharmaceutical Society of Korea 2006 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.29 No.9
Danshen is an herbal medication frequently used in oriental medicine to treat liver or kidney malfunction. In the course of our studies, we observed that compounds purified from Danshen exhibit an inhibitory activity against Discoidin Domain Receptor 2 (DDR2) tyrosine kinase. Through this inhibition, these compounds also inhibited the growth of HSC T6 cells and suppressed the expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin and MMP2, as well as collagen synthesis, all of which are increased in activated liver stellate cells. Given that activation of liver stellate cells is the hallmark of liver fibrosis and that DDR2 plays a critical role in this activation, these results suggest that one of the pharmacological activities of Danshen extract that protects the liver is the inhibition of key cell-signaling kinases, such as DDR2, in liver stellate cells.

Fifty-two Korean japonica rice cultivars were analyzed for leaf blast resistance and genotyped with 4 STS and 26 SSR markers flanking the specific chromosome sites linked with blast resistance genes. In our analysis of resistance genes in 52 japonica cultivars using STS markers tightly linked to Pib, Pita, Pi5(t) and Pi9(t), the blast nursery reaction of the cultivars possessing the each four major genes were not identical to that of the differential lines. Eight of the 26 SSR markers were associated with resistant phenotypes against the isolates of blast nursery as well as the specific Korean blast isolates, 90-008 (KI-1113), 03-177 (KJ-105). These markers were linked to Pit, Pish, Pib, Pi5(t), Piz, Pia, Pik, Pi18, Pita and Pi25(t) resistance gene loci. Three of the eight SSR markers, MRG5836, RM224 and RM7102 only showed significantly associated with the phenotypes of blast nursery test for two consecutive years. These three SSR markers also could distinguish between resistant and susceptible japonica cultivars. These results demonstrate the usefulness of marker-assisted selection and genotypic monitoring for blast resistance of rice in blast breeding programs.

<B>ABSTRACT</B><P>During a previous study on the molecular interaction between commensal bacteria and host gut immunity, two novel bacterial strains, A911T and G707T, were isolated from the gut of <I>Drosophila melanogaster</I>. In this study, these strains were characterized in a polyphasic taxonomic study using phenotypic, genetic, and chemotaxonomic analyses. We show that the strains represent novel species in the family <I>Acetobacteraceae</I>. Strain G707T, a highly pathogenic organism, represents a new species in the genus <I>Gluconobacter</I>, “<I>Gluconobacter morbifer</I>” sp. nov. (type strain G707 = KCTC 22116T = JCM 15512T). Strain A911T, dominantly present in the normal <I>Drosphila</I> gut community, represents a novel genus and species, designated “<I>Commensalibacter intestini</I>” gen. nov., sp. nov. (type strain A911 = KCTC 22117T = JCM 15511T).</P>
