Effects of the kind and concentration of salt on oxidation of lipids and on formation of flavor components have been studied with four varieties of fermented anchovies prepared with 20% sun-dried salt (sample B), 12% refined salt (sample C), 16.5% refined salt(sample D) and 16.5% refined salt plus 25% brine(sample E). The sample B showed higher peroxide and TBA value and also higher content of TMA than those prepared with refined salt. The amounts of amino-N and VBN in sample B appeared larger than in sample D but was in a similar level with those in sample C. On the other hands, much smaller amounts of lactic and succinic acid were observed in sample B compared with in sample C and D. Sample C revealed the highest level of lactic acid among the samples tested. The changes in the amounts of each free amino acid displayed similar tendencies in all samples, except decreasing tendency of tyrosine in sample B and increasing tendency of aspartic acid in sample C. Also observed was lower IMP and inosine level in sample B than in C and D, but hypoxanthine level was higher in B. In general, sample E indicated remarkably lower values of experimental data in all cases mentioned above, but the highest TBA balue.

Infective endocarditis related to pacemaker implantation is a rare complication. However, it is a potentially lethal complication with a mortality rate of 30 to 35%. Infective endocarditis associated with pacemaker implantation usually involves the right heart and tricuspid valve. Conservative treatment without complete removal of the entire pacing system is prone to fail (i.e. result in infection relapse or development of sepsis). Therefore, the total extraction of the entire pacemaker system should be considered as standard therapy for most patients with pacemaker-related endocarditis and for many patients with local infectious symptoms at the site of pacemaker implantation to achieve complete recovery. We report a case of a 42-year-old man with documented pacemaker related left-sided endocarditis that was associated with multiple embolic events. Also, we review the literature regarding pacemaker-related endocarditis and local wound infection, in particular with respect to the modalities of treatment.(Korean J Med 73:324-329, 2007)

<P>Matrine is a natural compound extracted from the herb <I>Sophora flavescens</I> Ait which is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating various diseases. Recently, matrine was reported to have antitumor effects against a variety of cancers without any obvious side effects; however, the molecular mechanisms of its antiproliferative effects on cancer are unclear. Here, we report that matrine inhibits autophagy‐mediated energy metabolism, which is necessary for pancreatic cancer growth. We found that matrine significantly reduces pancreatic cancer growth <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I> by insufficiently maintaining mitochondrial metabolic function and energy level. We also found that either pyruvate or α‐ketoglutarate supplementation markedly rescues pancreatic cancer cell growth following matrine treatment. Inhibition of mitochondrial energy production results from matrine‐mediated autophagy inhibition by impairing the function of lysosomal protease. Matrine‐mediated autophagy inhibition requires stat3 downregulation. Furthermore, we found that the antitumor effect of matrine on pancreatic cancer growth depends on the mutation of the KRAS oncogene. Together, our data suggest that matrine can suppress the growth of KRAS‐mutant pancreatic cancer by inhibiting autophagy‐mediated energy metabolism.</P>
