        Effect of Curcumin on Intracerebroventricular Colchicine-Induced Cognitive Impairment and Oxidative Stress in Rats

        This study was designed to investigate the protective effects of curcumin against colchicine-induced cognitiveimpairment and oxidative stress in rats. Male Wistar rats (weighing 150200 g) received colchicine intracerebroventricularly(15 .g per rat), and cognitive dysfunctions were evaluated by the Morris water maze and the plus maze performance task andsupported by biochemical tests. Central administration of colchicine caused memory deficit in both the Morris water mazeand the elevated plus maze task paradigm tasks. Chronic treatment with curcumin (550 mg/kg, p.o.) twice daily for a periodof 25 days beginning 4 days prior to colchicine injection significantly improved the colchicine-induced cognitive impairment.Biochemically, chronic administration of curcumin significantly reduced the elevated lipid peroxidation, restored the decreasedreduced glutathione level and acetylcholinesterase activity, and attenuated the raised colchicine-induced elevated nitrite lev-els. The results of the present study indicate that curcumin has a protective role against colchicine-induced cognitive impair-ment and associated oxidative stress.

        Effect of Undegradable Dietary Protein Level and Plane of Nutrition on Lactation Performance in Crossbred Cattle

        An experiment was conducted in order to assess the effect of level of RDP:UDP ratio and level of feeding concentrate on milk yield, milk composition and nutrient utilization in lactating crossbred cattle. Twenty four medium producing (-10 kg/d, 45 to 135 days postpartum) lactating crossbred cows were divided into four groups of six animals each in a 2${\times}$2 factorial completely randomized design. The cows in group 1 were fed concentrate mixture I containing 59:41 RDP:UDP ratio (low UDP) at normal plane (LUDP+NP), in group 2 were fed low UDP ration at 115% of NRC (1989) requirements (LUDP+HP), whereas cows in group 3 were fed concentrate mixture II containing 52:48 RDP:UDP ratio (high UDP) at normal plane (HUDP+NP) and in group 4 were fed high UDP ration at 115% of NRC (1989) requirements (HUDP+HP). Green jowar was fed ad libitum as the sole roughage to all the animals. The experimental feeding trial lasted for 105 days. The total dry matter intake (DMI), DMI/100 kg body weight, DMI/kg $W^{0.75}$, digestibilities of DM, OM, CP, CF, EE and NFE and intakes of TDN and DCP did not differ significantly among the different groups and also due to both UDP level and plane of nutrition and also due to their interaction. The total dry matter intake varied from 145 g in group 1 (LUDP +NP) to 152.57 g/kg $W^{0.75}$ in group 2 (LUDP+HP) diet. However, increase in milk yield with increased UDP level and also with increased plane of nutrition was observed consistently throughout the experimental period. The average milk yield was 7.66, 8.15, 8.64 and 9.35 kg in groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively and there was no significant difference in milk yield among different groups of cows. The overall daily average milk yields in cows fed with low and high UDP diets were 7.91 and 8.99 kg, respectively and at normal and higher plane of feeding the milk yields were 8.15 and 8.75 kg/day, respectively. Thus, there was 13.65% increase in milk yield due to high UDP level and 7.36% due to higher plane of feeding. The daily 4% FCM yields were 9.20 kg for low UDP diet and 10.28 kg for high UDP diet, whereas it was 9.11 kg at normal plane of feeding and 10.37 kg at higher plane of feeding. Fat yields for the corresponding treatment groups were 0.37, 0.43, 0.41 and 0.48 kg, respectively. The 4% FCM yield and also fat yield did not differ significantly among different dietary treatments and also due to UDP level and plane of nutrition, however, 4% FCM yield was increased by 11.74% with high UDP level and 13.83% with higher plane of feeding. The values for total solids, fat, lactose, solids-not-fat and gross energy contents in milk differed significantly (p<0.05) among the different groups and were significantly (p<0.05) higher in milk of cows fed LUDP+HP diet followed by HUDP+HP diet. Total solids (14.65 and 13.83%), lactose (5.44 and 4.92%), solids-not-fat (9.44 and 8.83%) and gross energy (887 and 838 kcal/kg) of milk decreased significantly (p<0.05) with increased UDP level while total solids (13.84 and 14.64), fat (4.84 and 5.36%) and gross energy (832 and 894 kcal/kg) increased significantly (p<0.05) with increase in plane of feeding. Gross and net energetic efficiencies and also gross and net efficiencies of nitrogen utilization for milk production were not significantly different among different groups and also were not affected significantly due to either UDP levels or plane of feeding. Results of the present study suggest that, increasing UDP level from 41% to 48% of CP in concentrate mixture and also increasing plane of feeding from normal (100%) to 115% of NRC requirements maintain a consistently higher milk production.

      • Magnetic ground state of the multiferroic hexagonal LuFeO3

        <P>The structural, electric, and magnetic properties of bulk hexagonal LuFeO3 are investigated. Single phase hexagonal LuFeO3 has been successfully stabilized in the bulk form without any doping by sol-gel method. The hexagonal crystal structure with P6(3)cm space group has been confirmed by x-ray-diffraction, neutron-diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy study at room temperature. Neutron diffraction confirms the hexagonal phase of LuFeO3 persists down to 6 K. Further, the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy established the 3+ oxidation state of Fe ions. The temperature-dependent magnetic dc susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron-diffraction studies confirm an antiferromagnetic ordering below the Neel temperature (T-N) similar to 130 K. Analysis of magnetic neutron-diffraction patterns reveals an in-plane (ab-plane) 120 degrees antiferromagnetic structure, characterized by a propagation vector k = (0 0 0) with an ordered moment of 2.84 mu(B)/Fe3+ at 6 K. The 120 degrees antifferomagnetic ordering is further confirmed by spin-orbit coupling density functional theory calculations. The on-site coulomb interaction (U) and Hund's parameter (J(H)) on Fe atoms reproduced the neutron-diffraction Gamma(1) spin pattern among the Fe atoms. P-E loop measurements at room temperature confirm an intrinsic ferroelectricity of the sample with remnant polarization P-r similar to 0.18 mu(C) cm(2). A clear anomaly in the dielectric data is observed at similar to T-N revealing the presence of magnetoelectric coupling. A change in the lattice constants at T-N has also been found, indicating the presence of a strong magnetoelastic coupling. Thus a coupling between lattice, electric, and magnetic degrees of freedom is established in bulk hexagonal LuFeO3.</P>

        Effect of Feeding Calcium Salts of Palm Oil Fatty Acids on Performance of Lactating Crossbred Cows

        Twenty lactating crossbred cows yielding 10 to 15 litres of milk daily during mid lactation were selected and divided into four groups of five animals to assess the effect of feeding calcium soaps of palm oil fatty acids (bypass fat) on milk yield, milk composition and nutrient utilization in lactating crossbred cows. The animals in groups 1 (control), 2, 3 and 4 were fed concentrate mixture containing 0 (no bypass fat), 2, 4 and 6% bypass fat, respectively. The average daily dry matter consumption in the various groups ranged from 13.1 to 13.6 kg and showed no significant difference among treatment groups. There was no significant difference among different groups in digestibility of DM, OM, CP and CF, however, ether extract digestibility in cows of groups 2 and 4 was significantly (p<0.05) higher than the control group. The average milk yields of the cows in group 3 (4% bypass fat) showed a significantly (p<0.05) higher value than cows of groups 1 and 2. Similarly, a significant (p<0.05) increase in fat yield, 4% FCM yield and SNF yield was observed for the cows in group 3 (4% bypass fat). The milk composition in terms of total solids, fat, lactose, protein, solids-not-fat and ash percentage showed a varying response and bypass fat feeding did not have any effect on milk composition of cows in different groups. The gross and net energetic efficiency of milk production ranged from 23.6 to 27.5% and 37.1 to 44.4%, respectively, and showed no significant difference among different treatment groups. The gross and net efficiency of nitrogen utilization for milk production ranged from 24.0 to 28.7% and 37.2 to 43.5%, respectively, and no significant difference was noted among different treatment groups. The supplementation with calcium salts of palm oil fatty acid reduced the proportion of caproic, caprylic and capric acids and significantly (p<0.01) increased the concentration of palmitic, oleic, stearic, linoleic and linolenic acids in milk fat with increase in level of bypass fat supplementation. It was concluded that incorporation of calcium salts of palm oil fatty acids at a 4% level in the concentrate mixture of lactating crossbred cows improved the milk production and milk quality in terms of polyunsaturated fatty acids without affecting the digestibility of nutrients.

        Effect of Feeding Transgenic Cottonseed vis-à-vis Non-transgenic Cottonseed on Haematobiochemical Constituents in Lactating Murrah Buffaloes

        An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding transgenic cottonseed (Bt.) vis-a-vis non-transgenic (non-Bt.) cottonseed on blood biochemical constituents in lactating Murrah buffaloes. Twenty Murrah buffaloes in mid-lactation were divided into 2 groups of 10 each. Animals of group I were fed with 39.5% non-transgenic cottonseed in concentrate mixture while the same percentage of transgenic (Bt.) cottonseed was included in the concentrate mixture fed to the animals of group II. Animals of both groups were fed with concentrate mixture to support their milk production requirements. Each buffalo was also offered 20 kg mixed green fodder (oats and berseem) and wheat straw ad libitum. The experimental feeding trial lasted for 35 days. There was no significant difference in the dry matter intake between the two groups of buffaloes. All the buffaloes gained body weight, however, the differences were non significant. Total erythrocyte count, hemoglobin content and packed cell volume were $9.27{\pm}0.70${\times}10^6/{\mu}l$, $13.01{\pm}0.60gdl$ and $34.87{\pm}1.47%$, respectively in group I with the corresponding figures of $8.88{\pm}0.33$, $12.99{\pm}0.52$ and $31.08{\pm}1.52$ in group II. The values of total erythrocyte count, haemoglobin content and packed cell volume did not differ significantly between the two groups of buffaloes. The concentration of plasma glucose, serum total proteins, albumin, globulin, triglycerides and high density lipoprotein were non significantly higher in buffaloes fed non-transgenic cottonseed than in buffaloes fed transgenic cottonseed. The cholesterol concentration was significantly (p<0.01) higher in buffaloes of group I ($136.84{\pm}8.40mg/dl$) than in buffaloes of group II ($105.20{\pm}1.85mg/dl$). The serum alkaline phosphotase, glutamic-oxaloacetate transaminase and glutamic-pyruate transaminase activities did not differ significantly between two groups of buffaloes. However, serum glutamic-pyruate transaminase activity was considerably high in buffaloes fed nontransgenic cottonseed as compared to buffaloes fed transgenic cottonseed. Bt. proteins in serum samples of animals of group II were not detected after 35 days of feeding trial. It was concluded that transgenic cottonseed and non-transgenic cottonseed have similar nutritional value without any adverse effects on health status of buffaloes as assessed from haematobiochemical constituents.

        Hydrothermally synthesized Na<sub>2</sub>Ti<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7</sub> nanotube–V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> heterostructures with improved visible photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen evolution - Its photocorrosion suppression

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>There is still a need to prepare heterostructure photocatalysts with high activity and recyclability but without using precious metals to reduce the cost of photocatalysts. Thus, a facile and simple method for the synthesis of a Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst via hydrothermal synthesis is reported herein. The chemical composition, morphology, and structural features of the photocatalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), N<SUB>2</SUB> adsorption–desorption specific surface area analysis (BET), and diffuse reflectance absorption (DRS) methods. It was observed that the specific surface area of the Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst increased with the incorporation of V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>. The Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst was then used for the removal of rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated solar light irradiation. The Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst revealed excellent photocatalytic activity and photodegradation kinetics as compared to pristine Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotubes and V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> photocatalysts. Furthermore, both the photoactivity and long-term stability of the Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst were superior to those of the pristine Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotubes and V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> photocatalysts. The excellent photocatalytic performance of the Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst can be ascribed to its high specific surface area (283.71 m<SUP>2</SUP>g<SUP>−1</SUP>), mesoporous structure, highly dispersed V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> nanoparticles, and hindrance of electron–hole pair recombination of Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> due to the V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> incorporation, which is proven by the photoelectrochemical results, including photocurrent and electron impendence spectroscopy results.         TiO<sub>2</sub>-based photocatalytic disinfection of microbes in aqueous media: A review

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The TiO<SUB>2</SUB> based photocatalyst has great potential for the disinfection/inactivation of harmful pathogens (such as <I>E.coli</I> in aqueous media) along with its well-known usefulness on various chemical pollutants. The disinfection property of TiO<SUB>2</SUB> is primarily attributed to surface generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as free metal ions formation. Furthermore, its disinfection capacity and overall performance can be significantly improved through modifications of the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> material. In this review, we provide a brief survey on the effect of various TiO<SUB>2</SUB> materials in the disinfection of a wide range of environmentally harmful microbial pathogens (<I>e.g</I>., bacteria, fungi, algae, and viruses) in aqueous media. The influencing factors (such as reactor design, water chemistry, and TiO<SUB>2</SUB> modifications) of such processes are discussed along with the mechanisms of such disinfection.         Optimal Speed Control of Hybrid Electric Vehicles

        The main objective of this paper is to control the speed of Nonlinear Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) by controlling the throttle position. Various control techniques such as well known Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller in conjunction with state feedback controller (SFC) such as Pole Placement Technique (PPT), Observer Based Controller (OBC) and Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) Controller are designed. Some Intelligent control techniques e.g. fuzzy logic PD, Fuzzy logic PI along with Adaptive Controller such as Self Organizing Controller (SOC) is also designed. The design objective in this research paper is to provide smooth throttle movement, zero steady-state speed error, and to maintain a Selected Vehicle (SV) speed. A comparative study is carried out in order to identify the superiority of optimal control technique so as to get improved fuel economy, reduced pollution, improved driving safety and reduced manufacturing costs.

        Investigation of molten fuel coolant interaction phenomena using real time X-ray imaging of simulated woods metal-water system

        In liquid metal fast breeder reactors, postulated failures of the plant protection system may lead toserious unprotected accidental consequences. Unprotected transients are generically categorized astransient overpower accidents and transient under cooling accidents. In both cases, core meltdown mayoccur and this can lead to a molten fuel coolant interaction (MFCI). The understanding of MFCI phenomenais essential for study of debris coolability and characteristics during post-accident heat removal. Sodium is used as coolant in liquid metal fast breeder reactors. Viewing inside sodium at elevatedtemperature is impossible because of its opaqueness. In the present study, a methodology to depict MFCIphenomena using a flat panel detector based imaging system (i.e., real time radiography) is brought outusing a woods metal-water experimental facility which simulates the UO2-Na interaction. The developedimaging system can capture attributes of the MFCI process like jet breakup length, jet front velocity,fragmented particle size, and a profile of the debris bed using digital image processing methods likeimage filtering, segmentation, and edge detection. This paper describes the MFCI process and developedimaging methodology to capture MFCI attributes which are directly related to the safe aspects of a sodiumfast reactor.
