The storage protein-like protein has been purified from the 5th instar larval haemolymph of the Chinese oak silkworm, Antheraea pernyi, and the preparation was shown to be homogeneous by 7.5% nativePAGE. The molecule was consisted of a single Submit with a molecular weight of 80K, but the number of the subunits was not determined. The protein was defined as glycoprotein by Schiffl's reagent stainting. Rabbit antibody prepared against the purified protein crossreacted with the 5th instar larval haemolymph protein of Antheraea pernyi and Anteraea yamamai, but not with those of Bombyx mori and Bombyx mandarina.

Background/Aims: Although controversial, probiotics and dietary fiber are commonly used for patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We evaluated the effects of multistrain probiotics on the symptoms of IBS to determine whether the addition of dietary fi ber had an additive effect on constipation-predominant IBS. Methods: A total of 142 participants who met the Rome III criteria were recruited and randomized into a control group or a test group. Participants in the control group received multistrain probiotic fermented milk with Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifi dobacterium infantis; the participants in the test group received the same probiotic fermented milk mixed with dietary fi ber such as sea tangle extracts, radish extracts and glasswort extracts. The patients were treated for four weeks. Results: Most of the symptoms of IBS, with the exception of fl atulence, stool consistency, and frequency of defecation, signifi cantly improved in both groups. In the analysis of IBS subtypes, especially constipation-predominant IBS, the frequency and duration of defecation and straining at stool were improved more in the test group than in the control group. Conclusions: Dietary fiber had additive benefits for the symptoms of constipation, especially in constipationpredominant IBS. (Gut Liver 2011;5:22-28)

3-Nitropropionic acid (3-NP) inhibits electron transport in mitochondria, leading to a metabolic failure. In order to elucidate the mechanism underlying this toxicity, we examined a few biochemical changes possibly involved in the process, such as metabolic inhibition, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), DNA strand breakage, and activation of Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Exposure of SK-N-BE(2)C neuroblastoma cells to 3-NP for 48 h caused actual cell death, while inhibition of mitochondrial function was readily observed when exposed for 24 h to low concentrations (0.2${\sim}$2 mM) of 3-NP. The earliest biochemical change detected with low concentration of 3-NP was an accumulation of ROS (4 h after 3-NP exposure) followed by degradation of DNA. PARP activation by damaged DNA was also detectable, but at a later time. The accumulation of ROS and DNA strand breakage were suppressed by the addition of glutathione or N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), which also partially restored mitochondrial function and cell viability. In addition, inhibition of PARP also reduced the 3-NP-induced DNA strand breakage and cytotoxicity. These results suggest that oxidative stress and activation of PARP are the major factors in 3-NP-induced cytotoxicity, and that the inhibition of these factors may be useful in protecting neuroblastoma cells from 3-NP-induced toxicity.
Superelasticity and Corrosion Behavior of 50Ti–(45-X)Ni–5Cu–XMo (at.%) Alloys
Nam, Tae-Hyun,Jung, Dae-Won,Kim, Jae-Hoon,Liu, Yinong,Kim, Ki-Won,Jeong, Sang-Sik Sage Publications 2006 Journal of intelligent material systems and struct Vol.17 No.12
<P>In this study superelasticity and corrosion characteristics of 50Ti–(45-X)Ni–5Cu–XMo alloys have been investigated by means of electrical resistivity measurements, X-ray diffraction, tensile tests, polarization tests, and optical microscopy. Substitution of Mo for Ni in a Ti–45Ni–5Cu alloy induces the B2–B19 transformation and the stability of the B19 martensite increases with an increase in Mo content. Superelastic recovery of 50Ti–(45-X)Ni– 5Cu–XMo alloys increases from 33 to 91% with an increase in Mo-content from 0 to 0.5%. The 50Ti–(45-X)Ni–5Cu–XMo alloys show small stress hysteresis below 100 MPa. The pitting potential of 50Ti–(45-X)Ni–5Cu–XMo alloys also increases with the increase in Mo content.</P>

Ceramide is Involved in $MPP^+-induced$ Cytotoxicity in Human Neuroblastoma Cells
Nam, Eun-Joo,Lee, Hye-Sook,Lee, Young-Jae,Joo, Wan-Seok,Maeng, Sung-Ho,Im, Hye-In,Park, Chan-Woong,Kim, Yong-Sik The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2002 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.6 No.6
To understand the cytotoxic mechanism of $MPP^+,$ we examined the involvement of ceramide in $MPP^+-induced$ cytotoxicity to human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. When SH-SY5Y cells were exposed to $MPP^+,\;MPP^+$ induced dose-dependent cytotoxicity accompanied by 2-fold elevation of intracellular ceramide levels in SH-SY5Y cells. Three methods were used to test the hypothesis that the elevated intracellular ceramide is related to $MPP^+-induced$ cytotoxicity: $C_2-ceramide$ was directly applied to cells, sphingomyelinase (SMase) was exogenously added, and oleoylethanolamine (OE) was used to inhibit degradation of ceramide. Furthermore, inhibition of ceramide-activated protein phosphatase (CAPP), the effector of ceramide, using okadaic acid (OA) attenuated cell death but treatment of fumonisin $B_1,$ the ceramide synthase inhibitor, did not alter the cytotoxic effect of $MPP^+.$ Based on these, we suggest that the elevation of intracellular ceramide is one of the important mediators in $MPP^+-induced$ cell death.
Reduced-Resolution Intra Block Coding Mode
Sung Jae Park,오승준,Jung-hak Nam,심동규,Jin Woo Hong 한국전자통신연구원 2009 ETRI Journal Vol.31 No.1
In this letter, a new intra-block coding mode is presented to improve the coding efficiency for band-limited signals. A band-limited block is sub-sampled, and the sub-sampled signal is coded on the basis of the conventional prediction/transform coding. The rest of the samples are reconstructed by interpolation at the decoder side without any side information. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves coding gains of 2.7% for common intermediate format (CIF), 4.29% for quarter CIF, and 6.39% for sixty 720 pixel sequences against the H.264/AVC JM10.2 reference software.
The importance of multi-omics approaches for the health assessment of freshwater ecosystems
Nam Sang-Eun,Bae Dae-Yeul,Ki Jang-Seu,AHN, CHI-YONG,Rhee Jae-Sung 대한독성 유전단백체 학회 2023 Molecular & cellular toxicology Vol.19 No.1
Background The major goals of monitoring aquatic animals are to understand ecosystem health status and to identify signals of environmental change and pollution. Over the past few decades, advances in individual omics technology have been expanded to aquatic ecotoxicology and health assessment. The single-omics approach has produced one type of result, but recently, the combined multi-omics approach has enabled depiction of multidimensional datasets for holistic interpretation regarding the molecular responses of biological systems. Objective In this mini review, the power of the multi-omics approach for monitoring the health of freshwater animals is described, along with a discussion on challenges and the current limitations in the complexity of integrating multidimensional datasets. Results Recent studies have suggested that the aquatic ecotoxicology field can benefit significantly using multi-omics platforms; however, the examples of multi-omics applications remain limited. The complex metabolism underlying the sensitivity, health status, response, tolerance, and adaptation of certain aquatic organisms can be uncovered through comprehensively integrated omics results and advanced bioinformatics. Conclusion Multi-omics approaches can provide crucial datasets for developing multidimensional biomarkers and deciphering novel biological insights into aquatic ecotoxicology and health assessments. This platform provides a novel opportunity for environmental scientists to connect the biological responses and chemical data in aquatic organisms exposed to environmental challenges.
