      • The Role of Information Systems in Supporting Knowledge Management in King Abdulaziz University: Case Study

        The purpose of this study is to explore the role of information systems in the implementation of knowledge management, at King Abdul-Aziz University (KAU) in Jeddah, by highlighting the importance of information systems and their implementation of the knowledge processes. The researcher used the case-study method to explore the importance of information systems in supporting the implementation of knowledge management at the university. Moreover, the study has used the questionnaire as a tool for collecting information and obtaining feedbacks from the administrators at the university, and a random sample was chosen to identify the study community. The study resulted that there is a statistical indication of the importance and degree of the use of electronic systems in the university by the administrators. The study sample members believe that the university is keen to provide information systems, where systems analyze data and convert them into knowledge information that benefits the senior management at the university. Members of the study sample emphasize the importance of electronic information systems at the university, which in turn saves time and effort in extracting information, reports, statistics and providing them easily to senior management. The study also concluded with some recommendations, such as emphasizing the importance of knowledge management as one of its top priorities, spreading the knowledge culture, instilling a vision of knowledge among individuals, and emphasizing the importance of information systems.

        Maleated Natural Rubber Compatibilized Natural Rubber/Halloysite Nanotubes Composites

        The properties of rubber composites depend strongly on the compatibility of the rubber matrix and particulate filler. The polarity difference between the two phases has always been the main concern. Natural rubber (NR) and halloysite nanotubes (HNT) are one of the examples of the incompatible system. In this regard, a suitable compatibilizer is recommended to mediate the interactions. In this study, the maleated natural rubber (MNR) with various amounts of maleic anhydride (MA) was introduced as a compatibilizer to this composite. By increasing MA contents, scorch and curing times were increased whereas the maximum torque and the torque differences exhibited the highest values at the MA content of 2 phr. Payne effect was also implemented to monitor their rubber-filler interactions. The MNR with 2 phr of MA exhibited the lowest filler-filler interaction as shown by a lower decrement of storage modulus at high strain. This rubber composite also exhibited the optimum tensile and tear strengths. It is clearly highlighted that application of the MNR with a suitable MA amount enables to increase the rubber-filler interaction significantly and therefore improve a HNT dispersion. Hence, the use of MNR provided the great potential to compatibilize NR and HNT.

        Foreign Competition and Income Distribution in Canada: A Dynamic Microsimulation CGE Model Analysis

        In this study we assess the impact of increased foreign competition on labour markets and income distribution in Canada, using a newly developed dynamic microsimulation computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. The main findings of the simulations conducted are that the decline in world prices of imports and exports of the manufacturing products during the 2000s induces small increases in low-income rates and inequality in the short run as well as contractions in the export-oriented manufacturing sectors. In the long run, however, it enhances capital accumulation, particularly in the primary and service sectors, increases real GDP and reduces low-income rates, especially among families with two persons or more.

        Multiplicative bias correction for generalized Birnbaum–Saunders kernel density estimators and application to nonnegative heavy tailed data

        In this paper, we show that the multiplicative bias correction (MBC) techniques can be applied for generalized Birnbaum–Saunders (GBS) kernel density estimators. First, some properties of the MBC-GBS kernel density estimators (bias, variance and mean integrated squared error) are shown. Second, the choice of bandwidth is investigated by adopting the popular cross-validation technique. Finally, the performances of the MBC estimators based on GBS kernels are illustrated by a simulation study, followed by a real application for nonnegative heavy tailed (HT) data. In general, in terms of integrated squared bias (ISB) and integrated squared error (ISE), the proposed estimators outperform the standard GBS kernel estimators.

        Application of MCT-βCD to Modify Cellulose/Wool Blended Fabrics for Upgrading Their Reactive Printability and Antibacterial Functionality

        Pre-loading of monochlorotriazinyl β-Cyclodextrin (MCT-βCD) onto/within viscose/wool (V/W) and cotton/wool (C/W) blended fabrics provide hosting cavities that can form host-guest inclusion complexes with reactive dyes in postprinting as well as with triclosan derivative or silver nanoparticles/hyperbranched polyamide-amine (AgNPs/HBPAA) composite in subsequent final antibacterial finishing step. Coloration properties, antibacterial activity against (S. aureus) and (E. coli) pathogenic bacteria, durability of the obtained products, according to the above mentioned route, to wash, surface morphology and composition of selected samples were investigated. Results obtained signify that premodification of the nominated substrates with MCT- βCD (10 g/l), followed by reactive printing with mono-or bifunctional reactive dye (20 g/l), and subsequent post-finishing with triclosan derivative or AgNPs/HBPAA composite (15 g/l each) is an efficient treatments sequence for attaining reactive prints with significant antibacterial efficacy and noticeable durability to wash. Surface depositions of selected active ingredients were also confirmed using SEM and EDX analysis.

        Citrus tristeza virus-based induced gene silencing of phytoene desaturase is more efficient when antisense orientation is used

        In this study, phytoene desaturase (PDS) in citrus and green fluorescent protein (GFP) in Nicotiana benthamiana (line 16c) were silenced by virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) with Citrus tristeza virus (CTV), using the sense and antisense orientations. The antisense orientation showed a stronger reduction of GFP expression in N. benthamiana compared with the sense orientation. Similarly, the antisense orientation of pds induced stronger leaf photobleaching than the sense orientation. The antisense orientation produced higher levels of pds- and gfp-specific short interfering RNAs (siRNAs; ∼ 21 nucleotides) than the sense orientation. In addition, the antisense orientation of pds resulted in lower expression of carotenoid biosynthetic genes and produced lower levels of carotenoids and chlorophylls compared to the sense orientation. Furthermore, the antisense insertion resulted in higher accumulation of the colorless carotenoid phytoene compared to the sense orientation. Our results indicate that the gene fragments inserted using the antisense orientation induced higher gene silencing than the sense orientation because more short interfering RNAs were produced. These siRNAs are complementary to the mRNAs of the target gene and consequently guide the degradation of target mRNA. Better understanding of gene silencing mechanisms in plants is necessary to enhance VIGS technology.

        A novel four-unknown quasi-3D shear deformation theory for functionally graded plates

        In this article a four unknown quasi-3D shear deformation theory for the bending analysis of functionally graded (FG) plates is developed. The advantage of this theory is that, in addition to introducing the thickness stretching impact (<i>ε<sub>z</sub></i> ≠ 0), the displacement field is modeled with only four variables, which is even less than the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The principle of virtual work is utilized to determine the governing equations. The obtained numerical results from the proposed theory are compared with the CPT, FSDT, and other quasi-3D HSDTs.

        An Eco-Friendly Multifunctional Nano-Finishing of Cellulose/Wool Blends

        A new approach for an eco-friendly multi-functionalization of cotton/wool (C/W) and viscose/wool (V/W) blended fabrics was investigated. In this study, Ag-nanoparticle (Ag-NP) and/or ZnO-nanoparticle (ZnO-NP) functional agents were incorporated into the finishing bath along with citric acid (CA) or succinic acid (SA) as ester-crosslinking or esterifying agent, and sodium hypophosphite catalyst using the padding technique. The obtained results indicated that the extent of multi-functionalization expressed as antibacterial activity, UV-blocking functionality and wrinkle recovery ability were determined by kind of nanomaterial, nature of carboxylic acid, i.e., bi- or tri-functional and type of substrate. The results also demonstrated that blended fabrics finished with Ag-NP/ZnO-NP/CA/SHP nano-finishing formulation exhibited outstanding durable multi-functional properties even after 10 washing cycles. In addition, the change in surface morphology and the existence of Ag and/or Zn onto the selected V/W fabric surfaces have been confirmed by SEM and EDX analysis respectively.

        Physical and Psychosocial Effects of War on Children

        A growing number of youngsters have grown up experiencing conflicts or war and being deprived of peace in several countries in the world. Securing the safety of youngsters in such intimidating environments through the execution of international humanitarian law and human rights law becomes more essential. Numerous resolutions and rules have been approved by the International groups to protect youngsters from armed conflicts and they are supported by many countries. Despite the efforts of global community to ensure children’s rights during armed conflict based on the agenda of international humanitarian law, its execution is an enormous task and no technique works perfectly for the execution of those resolutions and rules. The effective execution relies on the ability of humanitarian organizations to deliver safety in respond to the authenticities of youngsters’ lives as observers, combatants and sufferers. This research uses the case of Pakistan to address the absence of implementation of these resolutions and aims to propose an appropriate plan for resolving this issue.
