Background/Aims: Infectious complications are major concerns when treating patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This study evaluated clinical differences across countries/regions in the management of infectious diseases in patients with IBD. Methods: A multinational online questionnaire survey was administered to participants at the 8th meeting of the Asian Organization for Crohn’s and Colitis. The questionnaire included questions regarding surveillance, diagnosis, management, and prevention of infection in patients with IBD. Results: A total of 384 physicians responded to the questionnaire. The majority of Korean (n=70, 63.6%) and Chinese (n=51, 51.5%) physicians preferred vancomycin to metronidazole in the treatment of Clostridium difficile infection, whereas more than half of the Japanese physicians (n=62, 66.7%) preferred metronidazole. Physicians in Korea (n=88, 80.0%) and China (n=46, 46.5%) preferred a 3-month course of isoniazid and rifampin to treat latent tuberculosis infection, whereas most physicians in Japan (n=71, 76.3%) favored a 9-month course of isoniazid. Most Korean physicians (n=89, 80.9%) recommended hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination in patients lacking HBV surface antigen, whereas more than half of Japanese physicians (n=53, 57.0%) did not consider vaccination. Conclusions: Differences in the diagnosis, prevention, and management of infections in patients with IBD across countries/regions reflect different prevalence rates of infectious diseases. This survey may broaden understanding of the real-world clinical settings across Asian countries/regions and provide information for establishing practical guidelines to manage patients with IBD. Genistein protects the kidney from cisplatin-induced injury

Oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to the pathogenesis of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. We found that genistein, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor with broad specificities, and which also has estrogen-like activity, had protective effects on cisplatin-induced renal injury in mice. Genistein significantly decreased reactive oxygen species production, the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 proteins, as well as the translocation of the p65 subunit of nuclear factor-κB into the nucleus and the infiltration of macrophages, all of which were increased in the kidney by cisplatin treatment. Genistein also decreased cisplatin-induced apoptosis by regulating p53 induction in kidney. Genistein significantly reduced reactive oxygen species production in cisplatin-treated normal human kidney HK-2 cells. High-temperature ionic and electronic resistivity of MgO- and Ta2O5- doped aluminum nitride

<P>In this work, using high-temperature impedance spectroscopy and microstructure analysis, we investigated the ionic and the electronic transport properties of aluminum nitride materials doped with MgO and Ta2O5 at temperatures up to 773 K. The electronic conductivity, due to the electron carrier, was greatly inhibited by addition of MgO, which might be due to the decreased electron carrier concentration via electronic compensation of MgO in the AlN matrix. The ionic conductivity due to grains of MgO-doped AlN increased by several orders of magnitude due to ionic defects generated by MgO substitution, whereas the ionic conductivity of the grain boundary of MgO-doped AlN decreased by one order of magnitude as a result of the formation of Mg'(Al) defects in the grain boundary, which elevated the Schottky barrier. The microstructural analysis showed that MgO addition promoted formation of an amorphous liquid phase including Mg, which is evidence of the selective precipitation of Mg in the grain boundary. Ta2O5-doped AlN also exhibited a decreased ionic conductivity of the grain boundary, which might have been due to the formation of an ionic pair of (O-N (center dot)-VaEuro '(Al)) caused by the dissolution of Ta in the AlN matrix.</P>

Chemicals related to hydrogen peroxide (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>) and nitric oxide (NO) generations were exogenously applied to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae (Fof ) causing Fusarium wilt disease in strawberry plants, and regulations of in vitro conidial germination and mycelial growth of the fungus by the chemical treatments were evaluated. H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> drastically reduced the conidial germination of Fof in a dose-dependent manner, and treatment with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3-AT) catalase inhibitor also led to dose-dependent inhibition of conidial germination but relatively moderately. Gradual decreases in mycelial growth of Fof were found by high concentrations of H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, whilst exogenous 3-AT slightly increased the mycelial growth. Increasing sodium nitroprusside (SNP) NO donor, N<sup>G</sup>-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) NO synthase (NOS)-inhibitor and tungstate nitrate reductase (NR) inhibitor led to dose-dependent reductions in conidial germination of Fof in quite different levels. SNP conversely increased the mycelial growth but increasing L-NAME moderately decreased the mycelial growth. Tungstate strongly enhanced mycelial growth. Differentially regulated in vitro mycelial growths of Fof were demonstrated by SNP, L-NAME and tungstate with or without H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> supplement. Superoxide anion production was also regulated during the mycelial growth of Fof by nitric oxide. These results show that H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> and NO-associated enzymes can be suggested as fungal growth regulators of Fof as well as eco-friendly disease-managing agents in strawberry production fields.
Multiple Cavitary Pulmonary Nodules Caused by Mycobacterium intracellulare

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have been increasingly recognized as an important cause of chronic pulmonary infections. The Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), which is composed of two species, Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium intracelluare, is the most commonly encountered pathogen associated with NTM lung disease. MAC pulmonary infection typically presents in a fibrocavitary form or a nodular bronchiectatic form. However, there have been atypical presentations of MAC pulmonary infections, including solitary pulmonary nodules (SPN). There have been several previous reports of SPN due to MAC infection in the United States, Japan, and Korea. In 2009, Sekine and colleagues reported a case of MAC pulmonary infection presenting with multiple nodules. To date, however, there have been no cases of NTM lung infection with multiple cavitary pulmonary nodules, and neither a fibrotic change nor nodular bronchiectasis. The present case showed a multiple cavitating nodular lung infection due to MAC, which is very rare and different from the typical presentation of MAC pulmonary infections. We also showed that percutaneous transthoracic needle aspiration can be a useful diagnostic tool to evaluate a case of multiple cavitary nodules.

<P>The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of reinforcing polyaromatic polyamide (aramid) fibers with various orientations on the flexural properties of denture base resin. Aramid fibers with four orientations of unidirectional, woven, non-woven and paper-type were pre-impregnated and placed at the bottom of a specimen mold. Heat-polymerized denture base resin was packed over the fibers and polymerized. A three-point bending test was performed using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. The flexural strengths and flexural moduli of the unidirectional and woven groups were significantly higher than those of the control and other experimental groups.For the flexural moduli, all experimental groups showed significantly higher reinforcing effects than the control group. In conclusion, the unidirectional group located perpendicular to the direction of the load was most effective in reinforcing the denture base resin, followed by the woven group.</P>
