<P>We consider the evolution of large but finite populations on arbitrary fitness landscapes. We describe the evolutionary process by a Markov-Moran process. We show that to O(1/N), the time-averaged fitness is lower for the finite population than it is for the infinite population. We also show that fluctuations in the number of individuals for a given genotype can be proportional to a power of the inverse of the mutation rate. Finally, we show that the probability for the system to take a given path through the fitness landscape can be nonmonotonic in system size.</P>
Successful Endovascular Treatment of a Ruptured Giant Lumbar Arteriovenous Malformation

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare congenital vascular anomalies where rupture can be fatal. This report describes a case of a 69-year-old woman who presented with sudden severe lower back pain radiating to her left buttock and thigh and an inability to move her left leg. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) showed an extensive ruptured retroperitoneal AVM on the left paravertebral side with active bleeding and a large hematoma. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation with considerable blood transfusion was required. The AVM was effectively treated with coil embolization of the feeding lumbar arteries. Shortly after the intervention, the patient developed abdominal compartment syndrome. Urgent laparotomy with evacuation of the retroperitoneal hematoma was required. The patient was discharged 16 days after admission in a good physical condition and has been free of symptoms for more than a year after intervention. However, follow-up CTA showed residual contrast enhancement in the AVM and further surveillance is required.

In these days, closed form solutions to estimate the strength increment in the local buckling strength due to the rotational stiff ness of the closed-section ribs have been proposed through theoretical approaches using the energy methods and parametric numerical analysis. In this paper, the correlations between the local buckling strength of longitudinally stiff ened plates and the rotational restraint stiff ness of closed-sections ribs were thoroughly investigated through numerical analyses. Three-dimensional fi nite element models of longitudinally stiff ened plates were obtained using ABAQUS, and a series of comprehensive parametric numerical analyses were conducted in order to reveal the infl uential design parameters for required rotational stiff ness of closed-section ribs for reaching converged buckling strengths. Then, a simplifi ed design equation for the required rotational stiff ness for the stiff ened plate buckling strength has been proposed, which are applicable for both fl at and curved plates to achieve optimum design sections. The comparative study and trend analysis showed that the proposed design methods have a good correlation with the numerical analysis results. Finally, a series of design examples demonstrate a design process of the longitudinally stiff ened plates with closed-section ribs by using the proposed design equations.
Key Technical Challenges for Integrated Sensors in Power Electronics and Motor Drives

The paper presents technical issues which integrated sensors must address to be implemented in the next generation of power electronics and motor drives. The underlying goal of the sensor integration will be to improve reliability of power conversion systems while making the power converter and motor drive become the primary source of diagnostic signals for the application. The paper focuses on design methodologies that will allow this integration to succeed in meeting the technical demands for both reliability and for application level diagnostics.
Key Technologies for Future Motor Drives

This paper presents technologies that have strategic importance in future motor drives. The underlying strategic issue for motor drives is maintaining cost while increasing certain dimensions of functionality. The dimensions of functionality which should increase include reliability and added value features such as providing continuous energy optimization, providing sensing of the driven system suitable for application specific diagnostic purposes, and providing continuously optimal thermal utilization of the capability of the drive. This paper will address each of these issues and discuss the technology status for each case, with a focus on research needed to fully deliver the needed functionality.
“Worth One Minute”: an anonymous rewarding platform for crowd-sensing systems

Readily available and affordable consumer-grade electronics,with ever-increasing sensing, computing, and communicationcapabilities, have provided the ground for distributed computationand data collection systems. Crowd-sensing applicationsrely on volunteers providing access to their personal devices—acategory encompassing smartphones, wearables, vehicles, and awide range of ‘Internet of Things’ appliances—and using themas sensors. These systems rely on the willingness of participantsto invest in a common cause, which often entails explicit effortsfrom users, occupation of hardware resources, and risks of sharingprivate data. Incentives and rewarding schemes are adoptedto encourage user participation. This paper introduces the “WorthOne Minute” (WOM) platform: an implementation of a generalpurposerewarding system based on anonymous vouchers. Theplatform is designed to reward user efforts towards the commongood, rewarding their contributions and the intrinsic social valuethey provide, while preserving their anonymity.
A perspective on nonlinear model predictive control

Model predictive control (MPC) is widely accepted as a generic multivariable controller with constraint handling. More recently, MPC has been extended to nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) in order to realize high-performance control of highly nonlinear processes. In particular, NMPC allows incorporation of detailed process models (validated by off-line analysis) and also integrates with on-line optimization strategies consistent with higherlevel tasks, such as scheduling and planning. NMPC for tracking and so-called “economic” stage costs has been developed, and fundamental stability and robustness properties of NMPC have been analyzed. This perspective provides an overview of NMPC concepts and approaches, as well as the underlying optimization strategies that support the solution strategies. In addition, three challenging process case studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of NMPC.
