Vol.2012 No.6

New start-up firms are more likely to experience liability of newness because of scarce resources. In order to overcome these limitations and to make utilization of resources which are not under their direct control, they try to build networks which are known as contributing to achieving firm performances. Although many studies have been done so far, however, they have been so much focused on one or limited networks that there is still strong debate about their utilities. Furthermore, firms have various networks and their importance can vary according to firms' situations. Thus, this study aims to empirically analyze the effects of network types on firm performances throughout growth stages. For this, questionnaire surveys were administered targeting 247 companies that operate their businesses in Korea. The followings are found:Firstly, it was found that social networks don't have any effects on start-up firms' performances while they have significantly negative effects of growing firms'. Secondly, reputation networks are found to have significantly positive effects on both start-up and growing firms' performances while they have more effects on start-ups. Thirdly, information networks are also found to have the same effects as reputation networks do.Through this study, we found that if firms and especially start-ups establish sound and good networks or partnerships with those with good reputations or those which can provide useful market information, they will have positive signalling effects and obtain legitimacy which in turn improve their performances. In other words, this study implies that establishing networks with those with good reputations or informations will help start-ups to achieve high performances rather than social and personal networks.

2005 Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine Vol.22 No.2

Generalizes edema and hypoalbuminemia are relatively common presenting manifestations in many clinical situations. The differential diagnosis of hypoalbuminemia include; Kwashiorkor, synthetic dysfunction of the liver, and excessive protein loss as in nephrotic syndrome. In systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), hypoalbuminemia and generalized edema are most commonly due to protein loss associated with lupus nephritis; gastrointestinal involvement is uncommon, and therefore protein loss through the gastrointestinal tract is quite rare. We report a case of a protein losing enteropathy (PLE) associated with SLE. The patient was referred to out hospital for generalized edema, arthralgia and facial rash. After clinical evaluation, the patient met the criteria for the SLE diagnosis; hypoalbuminemia with general edema was consistent with a protein losing enteropathy. After two weeks of therapy with parenteral high dose glucocorticoid, the patients was improved in laboratory findings as well as clinical symptoms.

2003 Dementia and Neurocognitive Disorders Vol.2 No.2

Backgrounds and Objectives: Vascular dementia is a group of dementing disoders arising from various stroke syndrome. Among these. subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD) is regarded as a relatively distinct clinical entity. However, MRI patterns of SIVD are not homogenous. In some patients, lacunes are dominant, and in others, subcortical white matter changes are. This study was designed to compare risk factor profiles between SIVD with and without multiple lacunes. Methods: We divided 47 subjects (22 males, mean age. 68 years) recruited from VADAPET (Multicenter Trial For Evaluation Of The Changes In the PET Images Of Subcortical Vascular Dementia Patient) study into two groups one with more than 5 lacunes in deep gray matter (lacune group) and the other with 5 or less(non-lacune group) Clinical characteristics and laboratory findings of two groups were compared. Results: Nineteen of 47 patients (40%) belonged to the lacune group. The lacune and non-lacune groups d d not differ in the following variables: age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia heart disease, history of stroke or TIA, history of trauma or major surgery, family history of hypertension stroke, or dementia, age at diagnosis of dementia, body mass index, white blood cell count, ESR, CRP, fibrinogen, hemoglobin A1C, total cholesterol. LDL cholesterol creatinine, proteinuria, glucosuria, and microhematuria. However, male sex, smoking alcohol. hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol were possibly associated more with lacune group SIVD than with non-lacune group (p<0 1) Multivariate analyses revealed that smoking, hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol were independent predictors of SIVD with multiple lacunes Conclusion: Our study suggests that SIVD with multiple lacunes may be significantly different in smoking habits hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol from SIVD without multiple lacunes.

Effect of Microporosity on Tensile Properties of As-Cast AZ91D Magnesium Alloy

Lee, Choong Do 대한금속학회 2002 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.8 No.3

In the present study, the effect of microporosity on the tensile properties of as-cast AZ91D magnesium alloy was investigated through experimental observation and numerical prediction. The test specimens were fabricated by die-casting and gravity-casting. For gravity-casting, the inoculation and use of various metallic moulds were applied to obtain a wide range of microporosity. The deficiency of the interdendritic feeding of the liquid phase acted as a dominant mechanism on the formation of the micropores in the Mg-Al-alloys, rather than the evolution of hydrogen gas. Although tensile strength and elongation has a nonlinear and very intensive dependence upon microporosity, the yield strength appeared to have a linear relationship with microporosity. However, it was possible to quantitatively estimate the linear contribution of microporosity on the individual tensile property for a range of microporosity, which was below about 1%. The numerical prediction suggests that the effect of microporosity on fractured strength and elongation decreased as the strain hardening exponent increased. Furthermore, the shape and distribution of micropores may play a more dominant role than local plastic deformation on the tensile behavior of AZ91D alloy.

      • Transthyretin-related proteins function to facilitate the hydrolysis of 5-hydroxyisourate, the end product of the uricase reaction

        Lee, Youra,Lee, Do Hee,Kho, Chang Won,Lee, Ah Young,Jang, Mi,Cho, Sayeon,Lee, Choong Hwan,Lee, Jong Suk,Myung, Pyung Keun,Park, Byoung Chul,Park, Sung Goo Elsevier 2005 FEBS letters Vol.579 No.21

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Purine catabolic pathway in <I>Bacillus subtilis</I> is consisted of more than 14 genes. Among these genes, <I>pucL</I> and <I>pucM</I> are required for uricase activity. While PucL is known to encode the uricase itself, the function of PucM is still unclear although this protein is also indispensable for uric acid decomposition. Here, we provide evidence that PucM, a transthyretin-related protein, functions to facilitate the hydrolysis of 5-hydroxyisourate, the end product of the uricase reaction. Based on these results, we propose that transthyretin-related proteins present in diverse organisms are not functionally related to transthyretin but actually function as a hydroxyisourate hydrolase.</P>

Effect of microporosity on the tensile properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy

Lee, Choong Do,Shin, Kwang Seon Elsevier Science 2007 Acta materialia Vol.55 No.13

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The effect of microporosity on the tensile deformation of as-cast AZ91 magnesium alloy was investigated through systematic experimental approaches and theoretical predictions of a constitutive model for tension instability. The strain rate sensitivity was measured at room temperature by the incremental strain rate change test, and the microporosity was quantitatively obtained by fractography analysis on fractured surfaces. The tensile strength and elongation of as-cast AZ91 alloy have a strong inverse parabolic dependence on microporosity variation. The constitutive model can exactly predict the tensile deformation of AZ91 alloy through a practical estimation of strain-related terms and load carrying capacity by quantitative fractography. The overall plastic deformation of AZ91 alloy depends fundamentally upon not only the variation of load carrying capacity, but also on the strain hardening exponent and strain rate sensitivity. The contribution of strain rate sensitivity to plastic deformation becomes increasingly significant with a decreased strain hardening ability. As the strain rate sensitivity of the conventional material is very low but not zero, the constitutive model for the exact prediction of plastic deformation should take the strain rate sensitivity term into account.</P>

Effects of Precipitate and Dendrite Arm Spacing on Tensile Properties and Fracture Behavior of As-Cast Magnesium-Aluminum Alloys

Lee, Choong Do,Kwang Seon Shin 2003 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.9 No.1

In the present study, the fracture behavior of Mg_(17)Al_(12) precipitate and the effect of dendrite arm spacing (DAS) on tensile properties of commercial as-cast AZ91D alloy were discussed. In order to obtain a wide range of DAS, the as-cast specimens were fabricated by various casting processes. With gravity-casting, the inoculation and various molds were utilized, and the solidification rates of melts were measured at four positions of the cone-type mold. The empirical equation between the solidification rate and DAS was found to be [DAS=82.2ε_(avg.)^( -0.41)]. Although the DAS as well as the grain size showed a Hall-Petch relationship with yield strength, the UTS and elongation indicated a parabolic relationship with respect to the variation of DAS. The fracture behavior of the as-cast AZ91D alloy was composed of three stages: (1) plasticity-induced crack initiation at the precipitate by matrix deformation, (2) crack growth through concentration of plastic deformation at the interface between the precipitate and matrix, and (3) agglomeration of cracks formed around the precipitate. The plasticity-induced crack is formed through severe deformation of the α-Mg matrix, and the size of the crack in the precipitate is limited by the thickness of the precipitate. Since the stress intensity level around the crack is lowered with the average diameter of the precipitate, the tensile properties of the ascast alloy could be enhanced by the decrease of the average diameter of the precipitate.
