The pre-university English-educational background of college freshmen in a foreign language program: a tale of diverse private education and English proficiency

Byungmin Lee 서울대학교 교육연구소 2010 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.11 No.1

This study examines university students' pre-university exposure to extra-curricular English instruction in tutorial or other private supplementary institutions in Korea and abroad. A questionnaire and an in-depth interview were administered to forty-three freshman students enrolled in a foreign language program at a comprehensive university in Korea. This study reports on the key findings in the questionnaire and on the personal language-learning experiences of seven interviewees chosen from the larger sample. The findings reveal that these students had undertaken widely different language instruction outside of school. Some had access to supplemental programs, while others relied completely on language training available in primary and secondary schools in Korea. Those with opportunities for study in venues outside the standard language sequence in Korean schools had significantly higher English proficiency and may affect their performance in their subsequent university-level English program. The paper concludes with the proposals for addressing discrepant English-learning backgrounds in order to remediate the significant differences in English language proficiency that characterize post-secondary programs at Korean universities.

      • Evolution in hardness and texture of a ZK60A magnesium alloy processed by high-pressure torsion

        Lee, Han-Joo,Lee, Sang Kyung,Jung, Ki Ho,Lee, Geun An,Ahn, Byungmin,Kawasaki, Megumi,Langdon, Terence G. Elsevier 2015 Materials science & engineering. properties, micro Vol.630 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A ZK60A magnesium alloy was processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature at compressive pressures up to a maximum of 6.0GPa for up to 5 revolutions and this produced significant grain refinement and the development of a bi-modal microstructure. The evolution of hardness was evaluated using measurements of the Vickers microhardness and the change in texture was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The hardness results demonstrated an evolution with increasing equivalent strain and a strain hardening behavior which may be quantified using a hardenability exponent of ~0.07 when processing under a pressure of 6.0GPa. An XRD analysis over the total disk surface showed that the texture changed from a typical extrusion prior to HPT towards a saturated very weak basal fiber texture which developed in the early stages of HPT and remained constant with additional torsional straining up to 5 turns. By contrast, an XRD analysis of the local microstructure taken at the edges of the processed disks demonstrated significant changes towards a strong basal fiber texture via different texture stages with increasing HPT revolutions. This study demonstrates the importance of carefully documenting the measurement areas selected for texture analysis in the ZK60A alloy after HPT because of the occurrence of significant microstructural variations within the samples.</P>

Reverse analysis of nano-indentation using different representative strains and residual indentation profiles

        Lee, Jungmin,Lee, Chanjoo,Kim, Byungmin Elsevier 2009 MATERIALS AND DESIGN Vol.30 No.9

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>This study was designed to minimize the sensitivity of the data and experimental errors and to improve the accuracy in the reverse analysis of nano-indentation. This work was accomplished by using the various representative strains in a generalization of the loading curvature <I>C</I> and adopting only <I>C</I> and <I>Wp</I>/<I>Wt</I> as the independent parameters representing <I>P–h</I> curve in establishing a series of dimensionless functions. Finite element simulations of nano-indentation were performed for 140 combinations of each parameter (<I>E</I>,<I>σy</I>,<I>n</I>,<I>ν</I>) expressing the elastic–plastic behaviors of the universal engineering metals. The dimensionless functions established from the computational results were examined with different materials (Al6061-T6, AISI 1010, 1045 and copper (99%)). Finally, the relation between the residual indentation profiles and the strain hardening exponents of the indented materials was briefly investigated to verify the reliability of the reverse analysis.</P>

      • Position-selective metal oxide nano-structures using graphene catalyst for gas sensors

        Lee, Aram,Park, Jinheon,Choi, Kyoung Soon,Lee, Jouhahn,Yoo, Ilhan,Cho, In Sun,Ahn, Byungmin,Seo, Hyungtak,Choi, Jae-Young,Yu, Hak Ki Elsevier 2017 Carbon Vol.125 No.-

<P>The thermal transport growth of various metal oxide (MOx) nanostructures using graphene as a catalytic layer was studied. Graphene was synthesized by Cu-catalyzed chemical vapor deposition and transferred onto a SiO2-covered Si substrate using bubble transfer methods. Due to the catalytic activity of the atomic-thick carbon layer, control of the position of the MOx nanostructures as well as the growth parameters, such as nucleation density and growth rate, could be achieved. The position-selective and density-controlled MOx nanostructures were evaluated for hydrogen gas sensor applications, where different responses were obtained with hydrogen molecules. • An Efficient Feature Extraction Method for Facial Images based on Integral Histogram

        Byungmin Kim,Sangheon Lee,Myoungkyu Sohn,Jangwoo Lee 한국멀티미디어학회 2011 한국멀티미디어학회 국제학술대회 Vol.2011 No.-

Feature descriptors based in Local Binary Patterns (LBP) are widely used for face recognition and other texture analysis areas because of their simplicity of computation and robustness with respect to illumination. We propose a novel method that dramatically reduces the computation time of LBP feature vectors using an integral histogram. The proposed method can compute a feature vector in constant time by pre-calculating the integral histogram of the entire image area. Moreover, with this method the computation time for feature vectors of different areas and shapes of local regions is the same. In our experiments, we verified that LBP-based face detection speed is greatly improved by applying our approach to LBP face descriptors. In this paper, we present the proposed methods and the application of our approach to face detection; we also discuss our experimental results.

캐나다 퀘벡의 프랑스어 몰입교육 탄생의 사회, 역사적 배경

        이병민(Lee, Byungmin),박동열(Park, Dong-Yeol) 한국외국어교육학회 2009 Foreign languages education Vol.16 No.1

This paper attempts to examone the social and historical background of the French immersion program in the 1960s in Quebec, Canada. First, the paper discusses a variety of immersion programs around the world and attempts to define what an immersion language program is by comparing similar types of language programs. Second, it presents a brief history of the French-speaking Quebec province, focusing on the historical development and the identity struggles of the French-speaking Quebecois in Canada. Third, political and social turmoils like the Quiet Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s are discussed. Fourth, a series of major language bills (e.g., Bill 63, Bill 22, and Bill 101) passed during the period are dealt with to show how French-speaking Quebecois approached the French language to rebuild a French-dominated society in Quebec. Finally, this paper discusses how the social and historical background naturally led some English speaking parents to initiate and choose such a revolutionary language program to help their children survive in the emerging French-dominated society. Finally, its implications policies (e.g., English immersion education in Korea) should be dealt with in its social and historical contexts of a specific society.

      • Hybrid fragility curve derivation of buildings based on post-earthquake reconnaissance data

        Sangmok Lee,Do-Soo Moon,Byungmin Kim,Jeongseob Kim,Young-Joo Lee 국제구조공학회 2021 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.28 No.4

This study proposes a new hybrid method that uses both of post-earthquake reconnaissance data and numerical analysis results based on a finite element (FE) model. As the uncertainty of a capacity threshold for a structural damage state needs to be estimated carefully, in the proposed method, the probabilistic distribution parameters of capacity thresholds are evaluated based on post-earthquake reconnaissance data. Subsequently, the hybrid fragility curves were derived for several damage states using the updated distribution parameters of capacity thresholds. To illustrate the detailed process of the proposed hybrid method, it was applied to piloti-type reinforce concrete (RC) buildings which were affected by the 2017 Pohang earthquake, Korea. In the example, analytical fragility curves were derived first, and then hybrid fragility curves were obtained using the distribution parameters of capacity thresholds which were updated based on actual post-earthquake reconnaissance data about the Pohang city. The results showed that the seismic fragility estimates approached to the empirical failure probability at 0.27 g PGA, corresponding to the ground motion intensity of the Pohang earthquake. To verify the proposed method, hybrid fragility curves were derived with the hypothetical reconnaissance data sets created based on assumed distribution parameters with errors of 10% and 1%. As a result, it was identified that the distribution parameters accurately converged to the assumed parameters and the case of 1% error had better convergence than that of 10% error.

        북한 영어교육의 실상

        이병민(Lee Byungmin),양현권(Yang Hyun-Kwon),권오현(Kwon Oh-Hyun) 한국외국어교육학회 2005 Foreign languages education Vol.12 No.4

This paper reports the current situation of English and English education in North Korea. Two approaches are taken to achieve the goal: One is to examine social attitudes and government approaches to English education. Interviews with defectors from North Korea, newspaper reports and other related literature are used. The other is to analyze middle school English textbooks and research articles to reveal the current practice of English language teaching at schools. The results show that North Korean government and people are interested in learning and teaching English and they take various measures to improve English learning to meet national or individual goals. English seems to be considered as a way of improving their economic situations and finding a better opportunity for many North Korean people. However, English education in North Korea is still limited in terms of resources including learning materials and native teachers of English. Also academic research and practices in English education are still heavily influenced by Kim Ilsung and Kim Jungil’s words so that scientific investigations are limited. It is an impending issue to narrow a gap in English education between South and North Koreas to overcome difficulties encountered in the future.

        Sangheon Lee,Myoungkyu Sohn,Chiho Park,Byungmin Kim,Chulho Won,Dongwook Kim,Junghyun Lee 한국멀티미디어학회 2009 한국멀티미디어학회 국제학술대회 Vol.2009 No.-

Home TV systems were developed from black and white to color, and have also changed from a cathode-ray tube to LCD. Today, Internet IPTV connected to the network is being developed. In this paper, we discuss the current state of Internet IPTV and how it could develop in the future. If TV connected to the Internet is possible, bidirectional communications will support various additional services, and the set-top box of the TV will be a media box that can be developed to a higher value in homes. Consequently, the user will have the opportunity to acquire more intelligent service because of the increase in memory and an operation process for processors. We will also design an intelligent service for a future environment in the home which is based on t IPTV and explain the service scenario.
