        Overexpression of IFITM1 Has Clinicopathologic Effects on Gastric Cancer and Is Regulated by an Epigenetic Mechanism

        <P>In an effort to identify novel genes related to the prognosis of gastric cancer, we performed gene expression profiling and found overexpressed levels of human interferon-induced transmembrane protein 1 (<I>IFITM1</I>). We validated the gastric cancer–specific up-regulation of IFITM1 and its association with cancer progression. We also studied its epigenetic regulation and tumorigenesis-related functions. Expression of IFITM1 was evaluated in various human gastric cancer cells and in 35 patient tumor tissues by quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot analyses. The results showed highly up-regulated IFITM1 in cancer cell lines and tissues. Furthermore, IHC studies were performed on 151 patient tissues, and a significant correlation was revealed between higher IFITM1 expression and Lauren's intestinal type (<I>P</I> = 0.007) and differentiated adenocarcinoma (<I>P</I> = 0.025). Quantitative studies of DNA methylation for 27 CpG sites in the regulatory region showed hypermethylation in cells expressing low levels of IFITM1. Methylation-dependent IFITM1 expression was confirmed further by <I>in vitro</I> demethylation using 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine and luciferase assays. The functional analysis of IFITM1 by silencing of its expression with small-interfering RNA showed decreased migration and invasiveness of cancer cells, whereas its overexpression exhibited the opposite results. In this study, we demonstrated gastric cancer–specific overexpression of IFITM1 regulated by promoter methylation and the role of IFITM1 in cancer prognosis.</P>

        ECgene: an alternative splicing database update

        <P>ECgene () was developed to provide functional annotation for alternatively spliced genes. The applications encompass the genome-based transcript modeling for alternative splicing (AS), domain analysis with Gene Ontology (GO) annotation and expression analysis based on the EST and SAGE data. We have expanded the ECgene's AS modeling and EST clustering to nine organisms for which sufficient EST data are available in the GenBank. As for the human genome, we have also introduced several new applications to analyze differential expression. ECprofiler is an ontology-based candidate gene search system that allows users to select an arbitrary combination of gene expression pattern and GO functional categories. DEGEST is a database of differentially expressed genes and isoforms based on the EST information. Importantly, gene expression is analyzed at three distinctive levels—gene, isoform and exon levels. The user interfaces for functional and expression analyses have been substantially improved. ASviewer is a dedicated java application that visualizes the transcript structure and functional features of alternatively spliced variants. The SAGE part of the expression module provides many additional features including SNP, differential expression and alternative tag positions.</P>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, a colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor for mercury ions (Hg<SUP>2+</SUP>) was developed. Cationic polydiacetylene (PDA) vesicles with a quaternary ammonium cation and iodide as a counterion show a blue-to-red color transition; the color change is accompanied by a fluorescence enhancement in selective response to Hg<SUP>2+</SUP> ions because of a perturbation of the ene–yne conjugated backbone induced by counterion exchange. It allows for selective detection of Hg<SUP>2+</SUP> with the naked eye and the sensor is used to determine Hg<SUP>2+</SUP> concentrations in tap water samples.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A chemosensor for Hg<SUP>2+</SUP> was developed using counterion exchange of cationic PDA. </LI> <LI> It shows colorimetric and fluorescence response toward Hg<SUP>2+</SUP> and allows naked-eye detection. </LI> <LI> It is applied to determine Hg<SUP>2+</SUP> concentrations in tap water samples. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Linking Cultural Capital With Subjective Well-Being and Social Support : The Role of Communication Networks

        <P>This study examines the ways in which different forms of cultural capital are associated with college students' subjective well-being and social support. Results show that when social capital is accounted for, cultural capital derived from sports participation was positively associated with subjective well-being and social support. Further, the size and density of discussion networks about culture were positively associated with well-being and social support in general, while the heterogeneity of networks was negatively related. Findings from this study extend previous research on cultural capital by (1) drawing attention to the inclusive aspect of cultural capital, (2) examining online cultural participation as well as multiple forms of cultural activities including popular and sporting events, (3) applying the literature on interpersonal discussion networks to the context of culture and demonstrating the value of communicative action about cultural experiences, and (4) understanding the implications of cultural capital in a college setting.</P>

        전자금융감독규정의 규제 완화로 인한 환경비용 분석

        2019년 1월 「전자금융감독규정」규제 완화 이후, 많은 글로벌 IT기업들이 국내에 데이터센터를 설립하였거나 설립 계획을 공표하였다. Microsoft와 Google은 2019년에 데이터센터를 착공하여 현재 클라우드 서비스를 제공하고 있으며, Apple, Oracle, Facebook 등도 국내에 데이터센터를 건설하겠다고 공표하였다. 이런 상황을 감안하여 본 연구에서는 막대한 전력을 소비하는 데이터센터가 유발하는 환경비용을 데이터센터의 전력설비용량이 40MW라는 가정하에서 추정하였는데, 그 결과 데이터센터 1개의 연간 환경비용은 약 64억원, 데이터센터의 내구연한(20년)을 감안한 현재가치로는 약 870억원으로 산출되었다. 문제는 「전자금융감독규정」규제 완화 과정에서 환경비용에 대한 어떤 제약 또는 조건을 규정하지 않았다는 것이다. 따라서 본 연구의 데이터센터 환경비용 추정 결과와 현재 해외 글로벌 IT기업들이 데이터센터에 재생에너지 사용 비중을 꾸준히 높여가고 있다는 점을 감안할 때, 「전자금융감독규정」에 해외 기업들이 데이터센터를 국내에 설립할 때 재생에너지를 이용한 자체 전력생산을 허용하는 등의 추가적인 보완조치가 필요하다는 시사점을 도출할 수 있다. Korea government relaxed the regulation of Electronic Finance Supervision(hereafter, EFS) in January, 2019 before global IT companies have established a Data Center for private financial information. The deregulation made the Microsoft and the Google build in 2019 and provide the Cloud Service in 2020, and also many global IT companies, like Apple, Oracle, Facebook, declared that the Data Center would construct in Korea. We estimate the environmental cost from a Data Center under an assumption that the electric power facility capacity of a Data Center is 40 MW, then it cost about 6.4 billion Korean Won, and converted it to the present value, 87 billion Korean Won, by using both the life cycle period(20 year) of a Data Center and the social discount rate(4.5%). It implies that Data Center has a negative influence on the environment. Nevertheless, the EFS deregulation does not provide any kinds of restrictions or conditions on the environment now. In fact, overseas global IT companies are well aware of the environmental problems induced by their Data Centers and steadily make efforts to use the renewable energy more, but they don’t still take the same action in Korea. In this context, we derive a following policy implication: any kinds of supplementary and environmental condition for overseas global IT companies to deploy and build the Data Center in Korea should be added, i.e., the production of the electricity with a renewable energy by themselves, etc.

      • Differential gene expression pattern in early gastric cancer by an integrative systematic approach

        <P>To elucidate the molecular basis of early gastric cancer (EGC), the genome-wide expression pattern of cancer and normal tissues from 27 patients were analyzed by a microarray-based method. Using an integrative systematic bioinformatics approach, we classified the differentially expressed genes in EGC. Interestingly, the more highly expressed genes in EGC exhibited the most significant correlation with cell migration and metastasis. This implies that, even at the early stage of gastric cancer, the molecular properties usually observed in late-stage cancer are already present. Furthermore, we have found a novel association between the expression pattern and molecular pathways of EGC and estrogen receptor α (ERα)-negative breast cancer through cross-experimental analysis. These results provide new insights into the biological properties of EGC, as well as yielding useful basic data for the study of molecular mechanisms of EGC carcinogenesis.</P>

        EFFECT OF ANISOTROPIC PLASTICITY ON THE PREDICTION OF FORMABILITY OF E-FORM MAGNESIUM ALLOY SHEET

        In this paper, the formability of E-FORM magnesium alloy sheet (as one of recent alloys for automotive magnesium sheets) is analyzed based on the comparison between the results of actual magnesium (Mg) roof forming and those of finite element (FE) simulations. The FE model considers anisotropic mechanical properties and forming limit diagram (FLD) of the investigated magnesium alloy sheet. Through the coupled experimental and numerical procedure, the dominating factors for improving the accuracy of the numerical simulations are further studied. A commercial finite element analysis program, AUTOFORM®, is used for the simulations, in which identified mechanical properties and forming limit criteria are implemented as functions of temperature and strain rate. The improvement in the prediction of formability during the warm forming of the E-FORM magnesium alloy sheet can be obtained by considering a modified hardening law at large strain region, sheet anisotropy, and the properly measured forming limit curve.

        생태적 전환을 위한 ‘참여소득’의 가능성: 기본소득, 보편적 기본서비스, 일자리보장제와의 비교

        본 연구는 일의 형태 변화와 생태적 전환이라는 과제에 있어, 생태적 활동을 장려하기 위해 정책으로서 참여소득이 가지는 가능성을 검토하는데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 참여소득과 현재 다양한 대안으로 제시된 기본소득, 보편적 기본서비스 그리고 일자리보장제를 비교하였다. 일의 형태변화와 관련하여 참여소득과 기본소득은 생산적 노동을 넘어 사회적으로 유용한 활동까지 사회정책의 범위를 확장할 것을 제안한다. 반면에 일자리보장제는 생산적 노동에 대한 노동권의 보장과 완전고용의 달성이라는 관점에서 노동시장의 변화에 대한 대응을 주문하고 있다. 생태활동과 관련하여, 기본소득은 생태활동을 포함한 다중활동의 자율적 선택이 기본소득에 의해 가능할 것이라고 보고 있다. 보편적 기본서비스는 생태적 사회서비스의 직접 설계를 통해, 일자리보장제는 ‘그린 뉴딜’ 등의 일자리 프로그램을 통해 생태적 전환이 가능함을 제시하였다. 이러한 대안들과 비교할 때 참여소득의 긍정적 가능성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인간의 다중활동에 대한 사회보장을 지향한다는 점은 기본소득과 동일하나 호혜성의 원칙을 내재하고 있어 생태적 전환의 과정에서 정치적 실현가능성이 높다. 둘째, 참여소득은 보편적 기본서비스와 유사한 측면이 많지만, 공급 측면에서의 사회적으로 유용한 생태적 활동에 인적자원을 재분배하는 기능이 있다. 또한 사회적으로 유용한 활동을 직접적으로 장려하여 생태적 전환의 시급성 문제에 효과적으로 대응할 수 있다. 마지막으로, 불안정 노동의 문제를 소극적 소득보장의 문제가 아니라 생태적으로 유용한 다양한 활동들과도 연결시킴으로써 보다 새로운 형태의 적극적 노동시장정책으로 고려될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. The purpose of this study is to examine the possibility of Participation Income in terms of promoting socially useful activities. For this purpose, basic income, universal basic services, job guarantee policy, and participation income are reviewed from the viewpoint of policy mechanism to facilitate socially and ecologically useful activities. It is participation income that conceptually proposes the production of socially useful activities, but the other three alternatives also had the mechanism of the production of socially useful activities. Sufficient level of basic income can contribute to the production of socially useful activities, directly or indirectly, through human autonomy and useful activities, however, with a premise that people voluntarily participate in such activities. Job guarantee policy contribute to social useful activities by promoting people to work in pre-designed work that can be ecological. However, compared with these alternatives, participation income has a high political realization potential because it contains the principle of reciprocity. Second, it aims for the future of work by emphasizing socially useful activities beyond productive labor. Third, it is evaluated that it has potential and implications as a policy proposal that can actively produce eco-friendly activities which promotes the transition to a sustainable ecological society as well as create essential social services that contribute to the public interest.
