<P> Hordeum vulgare subsp. spontaneum is the progenitor of cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Domestication combined with plant breeding has led to the morphological and agronomic characteristics of modern barley cultivars. The objective of this study was to map the genetic factors that morphologically and agronomically differentiate wild barley from modern barley cultivars. To address this objective, we identified quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with plant height, flag leaf width, spike length, spike width, glume length in relation to seed length, awn length, fragility of ear rachis, endosperm width and groove depth, heading date, flag leaf length, number of tillers per plant, and kernel color in a Harrington/OUH602 advanced backcross (BC2F8) population. This population was genotyped with 113 simple sequence repeat markers. Thirty QTLs were identified, of which 16 were newly identified in this study. One to 4 QTLs were identified for each of the traits except glume length, for which no QTL was detected. The portion of phenotypic variation accounted for by individual QTLs ranged from about 9% to 54%. For traits with more than one QTL, the phenotypic variation explained ranged from 25% to 71%. Taken together, our results reveal the genetic architecture of morphological and agronomic traits that differentiate wild from cultivated barley. </P>

The extracts of Scutellaria baicalensis and Acacia catechu have been shown in previous studies to alleviate joint discomfort, reduce stiffness, and improve mobility by reducing the production of proinflammatory molecules over long periods of supplementation. The acute effects of intake of these extracts have not yet been investigated. Thus, we carried out a 1 week clinical trial to examine the extent to which UP446—a natural proprietary blend of S. baicalensis and A. catechu (UP446)—decreases knee joint pain, mobility, and biomarkers of inflammation in comparison to naproxen. Seventy-nine men and women (40–90 years old) diagnosed as having mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) consumed either 500 mg/day of the UP446 supplement or 440mg/day of naproxen for 1 week in a double-blind randomized control trial. Pain, knee range of motion (ROM), and overall physical activity were evaluated at the start and at the end of treatment. Fasting blood was collected to determine serum interleukins 1b and 6, tumor necrosis factor-a, C-reactive protein, and hyaluronic acid. The UP446 group experienced a significant decrease in perceived pain (P = .009) time dependently. Stiffness was significantly reduced by both treatments (P= .002 UP446, P = .008 naproxen). Significant increases in mean ROM over time (P = .04) were found in the UP446 group. These findings suggest that UP446 is effective in reducing the physical symptoms associated with knee OA.

Two genera of the Rhodymeniales, Halopeltis and Leptofauchea, are here reported for the first time from the Hawaiian Islands and represent the deepest records for both genera. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), rbcL, and large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU) sequences for Hawaiian specimens of Leptofauchea revealed one well-supported clade of Hawaiian specimens and three additional lineages. One of these clades is described here as Leptofauchea huawelau sp. nov., and is thus far known only from mesophotic depths at Penguin Bank in the Main Hawaiian Islands. Leptofauchea huawelau sp. nov. is up to 21 cm, and is the largest known species. An additional lineage identified in the LSU and rbcL analyses corresponds to the recently described L. lucida from Western Australia, and is a new record for Hawai‘i. Hawaiian Halopeltis formed a well-supported clade along with H. adnata from Korea, the recently described H. tanakae from mesophotic depths in Japan, and H. willisii from North Carolina, and is here described as Halopeltis nuahilihilia sp. nov. H. nuahilihilia sp. nov. has a distinctive morphology of narrow vegetative axes that harbor constrictions along their length. The current distribution of H. nuahilihilia includes mesophotic depths around W. Maui, W. Moloka‘i, and the island of Hawai‘i in the Main Hawaiian Islands. Few reproductive characters were observed because of the small number of specimens available; however, both species are distinct based on phylogeny and morphology. These descriptions further emphasize the Hawaiian mesophotic zone as a location harboring many undescribed species of marine macroalgae.

Coupled double-row formation in a quasi-1D wire

We investigate one-dimensional (1D) quantum wires in the weak confinement regime, where, at certain densities, the 1D system of electrons bifurcates into two rows. We show that the two rows are coupled, forming bonding and antibonding states, and that the coupling persists in magnetic fields from 0 to 16 T. In order for a double row to form, the Coulomb interactions in the channel must overcome the confining potential, which can be achieved by tuning the density and confinement. Using a split-gate device with a top gate and back gate, we observe a transition from single-row to double-row behaviour in the weak confinement regime. We further probe the characteristics of the coupled double row regime with dc source-drain bias measurements.

Characterizing the behavior of nuclear reactor plate fuels is vital to the progression of advanced fuel systems. The states of pre- and post-irradiation plates need to be determined effectively and efficiently prior to and following irradiation. Due to the hostile post-irradiation environment, characterization must be completed remotely. Laser-based characterization techniques enable the ability to make robust measurements inside a hot-cell environment. The Laser Shock (LS) technique generates high energy shockwaves that propagate through the plate and mechanically characterizes cladding-cladding interfaces. During an irradiation campaign, two Idaho National Laboratory (INL) fabricated MP-1 plates had a fuel breach in the cladding-cladding interface and trace amounts of fission products were released. The objective of this report is to characterize the cladding-cladding interface strengths in three plates fabricated using different fabrication processes. The goal is to assess the risk in irradiating future developmental and production fuel plates. Prior LS testing has shown weaker and more variability in bond strengths within INL MP-1 reference plates than in commercially produced vendor plates. Three fuel plates fabricated with different fabrication processes will be used to bound the bond strength threshold for plate irradiation insertion and assess the confidence of this threshold value.

<P>Abstract</P><P>This report summarizes the new swine leukocyte antigen (SLA) allele sequences and haplotypes designated by the SLA Nomenclature Committee of the International Society for Animal Genetics. There have been 74 new SLA alleles, comprising 18 SLA-1 alleles, 11 SLA-2 alleles, six SLA-3 alleles, two SLA-6 alleles, one SLA-DRA allele, 20 SLA-DRB1 alleles, three SLA-DQA alleles and 13 SLA-DQB1 alleles. Twelve new SLA class I and four new class II haplotypes have also been designated. This is the first official update since the 2005 reports on the nomenclature for factors of the SLA class I and II systems. This report also summarizes recent updates to the Immunopolymorphism Database–Major Histocompatibility Complex (IPD-MHC) website (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/ipd/mhc/sla/). All information has now been integrated to the SLA section of the IPD-MHC database, which serves as the repository for maintaining a list of all recognized <I>SLA</I> genes and their allelic sequences.</P>

We present ab-initio calculations of excited-state properties within single-particle and two-particle approaches in comparison with corresponding experimental results. For the theoretical treatment of the electronic structure, we compute eigenvalues and eigenfunctions by using a spatially nonlocal exchange-correlation potential. From this starting point, quasiparticle energies within the fully frequency-dependent G0W0 approximation are obtained. By solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation, we evaluate optical properties, including the electron-hole attraction and the local-field effects. The results are compared with experimental spectra from soft X-ray emission, as well as from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy or ellipsometry measurements. In more detail, we compute the valenceband densities of states, bound excitons, and the dielectric function. For the latter, we discuss both the absorption edge and higher critical points.
Micro-Raman Studies of Zincblende MgS

Recent improvements in UV Raman spectrometer capability have resulted from the availability of much improved dielectric filters, and we can now observe directly both the longitudinal and the transverse optic phonon modes of the wide-bandgap zincblende semiconductor MgS. We are, thus, able to confirm the earlier measured and calculated phonon frequencies with improved accuracy. The strong sequence of overtone modes that we observe is interpreted in terms of the resonance behavior of the Raman scattering process at this excitation energy. The spectra also show features which, by comparison to ab-initio calculations of the phonon dispersion and density of states, can be identified as arising from multiple Raman scattering processes involving longitudinal acoustic phonons near the Brillouin zone boundary.

Objective: To evaluate the utility of a society-based robotic surgery training program forfellows in gynecologic oncology. Methods: All participants underwent a 2-day robotic surgery training course between2015–2017. The course included interactive didactic sessions with video, dry labs, androbotic cadaver labs. The labs encompassed a wide range of subject matter includingtroubleshooting, instrument variation, radical hysterectomies, and lymph node dissections. Participants completed a pre- and post-course survey using a 5-point Likert scale rangingfrom “not confident” to “extremely confident” on various measures. Statistical analysis wasperformed using SPSS Statistics v. 24. Results: The response rate was high with 86% of the 70 participants completing the survey. Sixteen (26.7%) of these individuals were attending physicians and 44 (73.3%) were fellows. In general, there was a significant increase in confidence in more complex proceduresand concepts such as radical hysterectomy (p=0.01), lymph node dissection (p=0.01),troubleshooting (p=0.001), and managing complications (p=0.004). Faculty comfort andpractice patterns were cited as the primary reason (58.9%) for limitations during roboticprocedures followed secondarily by surgical resources (34.0%). Conclusion: In both gynecologic oncology fellows and attendings, this educational theory based curriculum significantly improved confidence in the majority of procedures andconcepts taught, emphasizing the value of hands-on skill labs.
