ERK1/2-Mediated Schwann Cell Proliferation in the Regenerating Sciatic Nerve by Treadmill Training

<P>Proliferation of Schwann cells in the injured peripheral nerve supports axonal regeneration, and physical training in experimental animals has been shown to promote nerve regeneration. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) activity can mediate neuronal responses to lesion signals, but its role in non-neuronal cells in the injured area is largely unknown. Here we report that treadmill training (TMT) facilitates axonal regeneration via the upregulation of phospho-ERK1/2 protein levels in Schwann cells in the injured sciatic nerve. Low-intensity, but not high-intensity, TMT increased neurite outgrowth of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) sensory neurons and potentiated Schwann cell proliferation. TMT elevated levels of GAP-43 mRNA and protein, and phospho-ERK1/2 protein in the injured sciatic nerves. TMT also enhanced phospho-c-Jun protein levels in the injured nerve. In-vivo administration of the ERK1/2 inhibitor PD98059 eliminated phospho-c-Jun, suggesting ERK1/2 phosphorylation of the c-Jun protein. PD98059 treatment decreased levels of BrdU-labeled proliferating Schwann cells in the distal portion of the injured nerve, and delayed the axonal regrowth that was promoted by TMT. The present data suggest that increased ERK1/2 activity in Schwann cells may play an important role in TMT-mediated enhancement of axonal regeneration in the injured peripheral nerve.</P>

<P>For the electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CRR) with high selectivity for HCOOH, In-Zn bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized as catalysts by <I>in situ</I> reduction of In2O3-ZnO NCs with various compositions. All In-containing bimetallic catalysts exhibited excellent selectivity to produce HCOOH, while Zn NCs favor CO production. A composition with In : Zn = 0.05 has higher catalytic activity than In NCs, with a faradaic efficiency of 95% and a HCOOH production rate of 0.40 mmol h<SUP>−1</SUP> cm<SUP>−2</SUP> at −1.2 V <I>vs.</I> RHE. The enhanced catalytic performance is in part ascribed to the fewer surface oxide layers, which increase the conductivity and facilitate the charge transfer. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the In-Zn interfacial sites make the HCOOH pathway significantly energy-favorable, which supports the higher production rate of Zn0.95In0.05 than that of In.</P>

<P>We propose a new local degradation model based on a non-uniform increase in donor-like traps (DLTs) determined by distributions of an electric field and?measured device temperature in amorphous In–Ga–Zn–O (a-IGZO) thin film transistors (TFTs). A systematic investigation of the degradation model reveals that vertical field-dependent DLTs are essential for modeling of measured asymmetric electrical characteristics between the?source and drain after positive gate and drain bias stressing. An increased temperature due to self-heating is found to play a role in intensifying the asymmetric degradation. From the individual simulation of measured transfer curves at different stress times, the?model parameters and an asymmetry index as a function of stress time are extracted. It is expected that this novel methodology will?provide new insight into asymmetric degradation and?be utilized to predict the influence of electric field and heat on?degradation under various bias-stress conditions in a-IGZO TFTs.</P>

Introduction It is difficult to determine the cause of acute abdominal pain in pregnant women. Close attention should be paid to select imaging technique, because the early stage of the pregnancy is important due to active organogenesis of fetus. Ultrasound is the primary imaging tool but limited to find specific cause of abdominal pain in pregnancy. Although there has been no evidence of deleterious effects during pregnancy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is valuable when ultrasound is inconclusive. The authors report two first trimester women with abdominal pain using MRI. Case 1 A 29-year-old woman presented to the emergency department (ED), complaining of abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Her home pregnancy test was positive, assuming 6 weeks pregnancy. Her abdomen was soft, and tender to palpation. Abdominal pain became too severe to lie down on the bed. Trans-vaginal ultrasonography showed fluid collection in pelvic cavity with no visible left ovary and gestational sac in uterus. MRI demonstrated intrauterine pregnancy (IUP) and about 2.6cm sized hemorrhagic corpus luteal cyst with rupture in the left adnexa. She had conservative treatment, and was discharged after 4 days of hospitalization. Case 2 A 31-year-old woman came to ED, complaining of abdominal pain. She was 6 weeks pregnant with in-vitro procedure. Her abdomen was distended and rigid with rebound tenderness. Abdominal ultrasonography demonstrated hemoperitoneum with echogenic mass in right adnexa. MRI showed IUP with ectopic corneal pregnancy. Surgical removal of ectopic corneal pregnancy was performed. Conclusion Ultrasound is still the primary imaging technique, but was not enough for decision making for the two patients we experienced. MRI was accurate to decide the definite treatment for the patients. When ultrasound finding are equivocal, MRI should be taken for the fast and prompt diagnosis of acute abdominal pain even in the early stage of the pregnancy.

Backgrounds/AimsThis multicenter study aims to evaluate the effect and feasibility of anti-reflux surgery compared with medical treatment forgastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). MethodsPatients with GERD who were undergoing medical treatment with proton pump inhibitors for more than 8 weeks and those whowere scheduled to undergo anti-reflux surgery were enrolled. Efficacy of pre-operative medical treatment was evaluated retrospectivelyand effect of anti-reflux surgery was prospectively evaluated at 1 week and 3 months after surgery. Quality of life (QOL) was alsoinvestigated before and after surgery. ResultsBetween February and October 2018, 51 patients underwent laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication for treating GERD at 5 hospitalsin Korea. Thirty-four patients (66.7%) showed poor proton pump inhibitor response. At 3 months after surgery, heartburn wascompletely resolved in 87.9% patients and partially improved in 9.1%. Acid regurgitation was completely resolved in 82.9% andpartially improved in 11.4%. Atypical extraesophageal symptoms were completely controlled in 45.5% and partially controlled in36.4%. GERD-related QOL scores at 1 week after surgery significantly improved compared with pre-operative scores. There was nodifference in GERD-related QOL scores between 1 week and 3 months after surgery. General QOL measured with European QOL-5dimensions and health-related QOL instrument with 8 items significantly improved after anti-reflux surgery. Satisfaction with treatmentwas significantly higher after surgery than before surgery (72.5% vs 11.8%, P < 0.001). ConclusionAnti-reflux surgery improved GERD symptoms and QOL in patients. Anti-reflux surgery is an effective treatment option compared withmedical treatment for GERD patients selected for surgical treatment.

Objective: Instent restenosis (ISR) remains still an important issue even in drug-eluting stents era. We hypothesized that higher inflammatory reaction, which is known as an important atherosclerotic process, at the culprit lesion may have higher restenosis. We sought to evaluate the baseline coronary plaque composition in patients with ISR. Methods: Study population consisted of 241 patients with coronary artery disease, who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention with virtual histology- intravascular ultrasound (VH-IVUS) and 9 months follow up coronary angiography. We compared coronary plaque composition between patients with ISR and those without ISR. Results: Patients with ISR (n=27, 11.2%) were likely to be older (66.2±9.5 years vs. 58.7±11.7 years, p=0.002), increased high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP, 1.60±3.59 mg/dl vs. 0.31±0.76 mg/dl, p<0.001) than those without ISR (n=214, 88.8%). Baseline angiographic, procedural findings and gray scale IVUS findings showed no significant differences between 2 groups. VH-IVUS examination showed necrotic core volume (22.1±19.9 mm3 vs.14.2±12.7 mm3, p=0.045) and percent necrotic core volume (14.3±8.7% vs. 19.5±9.1%, p=0.005) were higher in those without ISR than those with ISR, whereas percent fibrofatty volume was higher (16.6±9.7% vs. 12.4±8.4%, p=0.018) in those with ISR than those without ISR. The independent predictors for ISR were hs-CRP (Odd ratio=3.334, 95% confidence interval (CI); 1.158~9.596, p=0.026), and age (Odd ratio=3.557, 95% CI; 1.242~10.192, p=0.018). Conclusions: This study suggests that ISR was not associated with baseline coronary plaque composition but old age and an increased inflammatory marker such as hs-CRP. This study sheds light on the role of corporate social responsibility in firms`` growth by investigating how and what corporate social activities may, flow down china auto industry market. This study results based on in-depth case studies from 5 international auto corporations suggest that positive diverse corporate social responsibility amplified that the influence of commitment to the customer on firm``s brand loyalty and sustainable growth. The most important thing is that strategic corporate social responsibility activities including new venture creation support and national project program will have a positive influence on the firm``s growth and brand reputation. We build on advanced solutions to examine the unique and joint activities of auto corporations based on china auto industry market and important factors affecting sustainable growth in auto corporations. Contributions and implication of this study for current and future corporate social responsibility research are discussed.

We have proposed an InGaAs-based gateall-around (GAA) tunneling field-effect transistor (TFET) with a stacked dual-metal gate (DMG). The electrical performances of the proposed TFET are evaluated through technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed TFET demonstrates improved DC performances including high on-state current (Ion) and steep subthreshold swing (S), in comparison with a single-metal gate (SMG) TFET with higher gate metal workfunction, as it has a thinner sourcechannel tunneling barrier width by low workfunction of source-side channel gate. The effects of the gate workfunction on Ion, the off-state current (Ioff), and S in the DMG-TFETs are examined. The DMG-TFETs with PNPN structure demonstrate outstanding DC performances and RF characteristics with a higher n-type doping concentration in the In0.8Ga0.2As source-side channel region.
