This study was carried out to investigate the flora of major mountains located in Gwanghwa Island, Incheon Metropolitan City. Three or four times of field collection were conducted for four sites (Mt. Hyeolgu & Toemo, Mt. Haemyeong, Mt. Hwagae and Mt. Bongcheon) in 2007. Totally 67 families, 164 genera, and 215 taxa were collected. The flora of surveyed area contained 16 taxa of conservation priority grade. The total scored points of the surveyed area were 40 points. The points for collection sites were listed as follows; Mt. Hyeolgu & Toemo (16 points), Hwagae-san (16), Haemyeong-san (14), and Bongcheon-san (8). Clematis brachyura Maxim., Viburnum carlesii Hems!' found at Mt. Haemyeong in Seokmo Island, which are endemic and rare in Korea, need to be paid attention for consersation.
Unrecorded Soil Fungi Isolated from the Dokdo, Korea

Two unrecorded fungi, Diaporthe perseae and Fusarium falciforme, were isolated from soil sampled from Dokdo in Korea. There have been many reports of Diaporthe sp. and Fusarium sp. in mainland Korea but none of them have reported in Dokdo so far. We used the morphological features and two molecular markers including the internal transcribed spacer and translation elongation factor 1-α region to compare and analyze these species with the closely related taxa. As a result, we confirmed that these fungi were unrecorded soil fungi in Korea. Then, the cultural and morphological characteristics such as the conidia of these two fungal species could be clarified. These results are expected to help us to understand the distribution of fungi in Dokdo and manage the Dokdo Island Natural Reserve.
Grovesiella abieticola (Tympanidaceae): an Unrecorded Endophytic Fungus from South Korea

We report on an unrecorded endophytic fungus, Grovesiella abieticola (Zeller & Goodd.) M. Morelet & Gremmen isolated from Abies koreana of Mt. Halla in Jeju. In this study, we used a culture method to determine its conidia and compared relative species using an internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1, 2, and 5.8S ribosomal DNA sequence. Thus, we present the cultural characteristics and morphology of G. abieticola in this paper.
One Unrecorded Endophytic Fungi from Sub-alpine Conifer, Rhizosphaera pini

An endophytic fungus, Rhizosphaera pini strain NIE7426, was isolated from the sub-alpine coniferous tree Abies nephrolepis in Mt. Nochu of Gangwon Province. It was characterized by macroscopic and microscopic features, as well as the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1, 2 and 5.8S sequences. All morphological and molecular features support the first recognition of this taxon in Korea. In addition, this study adds A. nephrolepis as a host plant R. pini.
Fungal Endophytes Isolated from Needle Leaves of Three Coniferous Species on Mt. Seodae of Korea

We investigated endophytic fungi diversity of two Pinaceae species (Pinus densiflora, Pinus rigida) and one Cupressaceae species (Juniperus rigida) on Mt. Seodae, Korea. In total, 34 isolates were obtained from 19 host plants and identified according to internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. As a result, they were placed in 13 taxa. Among them, 52.9% belonged to Leotiomycetes, 32.3% belonged to Sordariomycetes, 5.8% belonged to Agaricomycetes, and 3.0% for isolates belonged to either Eurotiomycetes, Dothideomycetes or Ustilaginomycetes. In particular, Lophodermium growing in pine would be an especially important instance of biodiversity for endophytes, suggesting that further study examining its ecological function in the environment is critical.
Dermea piceina (Dermateaceae): An Unrecorded Endophytic Fungus of Isolated from Abies koreana

We found an unrecorded endophytic fungus, Dermea piceina J.W. Groves, isolated from alpine conifer Abies koreana . Until now only one Dermea species, D . cerasi, has been reported in Korea. In this study, we compared morphological characteristics and DNA sequences, including internal transcribed spacer and 28S ribosomal DNA, of D . piceina isolated from A. koreana with those of related species. Here, we present morphological and molecular characters of this fungus for the first time in Korea.

The unrecorded fungus Galactomyces pseudocandidus de Hoog & M.T. Sm. was isolated and cultured from an introduced species, Procambarus clarkii, in Korea. Two related species, Galactomyces citri-aurantii and Geotrichum candidum, have been reported, but no other Galactomyces spp. have been found in Korea. In this study, we isolated G. pseudocandidus from the digestive tract of American crayfish using RGY (river water-glucose-yeast) medium and then compared the morphological and molecular characteristics of this species with those of related species. As a result, we confirmed that G. pseudocandidus is an unrecorded fungus in Korea, so we described and reported the cultural characteristics and microstructures, such as conidia.
Diversity of Endophytic Fungi Isolated from Korean Ginseng Leaves

We investigated the diversity of the foliar endophytes of Korean ginseng. Endophytic fungi were isolated from healthy leaves of mountain-cultivated ginseng (MCG) and field-cultivated ginseng (FCG) at 4 sites in Chungbuk Province. A total of 24 species of fungal endophytes were identified using molecular approaches. Additionally, the diversity of these endophytic fungi was compared between MCG and FCG. The major isolated endophytes were Edenia gomezpompae and Gibberella moniliformis in the MCG and FCG samples, respectively. The results suggest that ginseng endophytes have different community structures in different environments, and this understanding may prove useful in ginseng cultivation.

We investigated the biodiversity of endophytic fungi in Pinus densiflora and Junipreus rigida from Mt. Baekryeonsan and Mt. Johangsan in Korea. In total, 59 isolates were discovered from 26 host plants and identified using sequences from the rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Twenty taxa of endophytic fungi were identified in this study; 62% of isolates belonged to Leotiomycetes, 34% belonged to Sordariomyetes, and 4% belonged to Agaricomycetes. Results confirmed three previously unreported endophytic fungi in Korea: Phanerochaete concrescens, Creosphaeria sassafras, and Scopuloides rimosa. Community analysis showed that the fungal diversity patterns of the samples from Mt Baekryeonsan and Mt. Johangsan are similar to those from previous studies and varied depending upon host and locality.

Here, Podospora leporina was isolated and cultured from Cypripedium guttatum Sw. (spotted lady’s slipper), which was designated as an endangered wildlife class 1 by the Ministry of Environment. Further, Podospora sp., which is found in Calanthe discolor Lindl. (Japanese hardy orchid) root is recorded as an endophytic fungus in Jeju Island, Korea. However, there is no existing record of Podospora spp. Thus, in this study, we analyzed the morphological characteristics and two molecular markers, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large ribosomal subunit (LSU), of P. leporina and compared these data with other relative species. Consequently, this endophytic fungal species was confirmed as an unrecorded species in Korea, so we presented cultural characteristics and microstructures, such as the conidia of P. leporina.
