Aplastic anemia is a disease characterized by pancytopenia in the peripheral blood and hypocellular bone marrow with the fatty infiltration. The causes of the acquired aplastic anemia were usually related to drugs and immune-related diseases. A 34-years old man was admitted due to general weakness. He has been going hemodialysis for 2 years because of end stage renal disease (ESRD) due to chronic glomerulonephritis. At admission, laboratory tests showed hemoglobin 6.2 g/dL, hematocrit 18.0 %, WBC 5,710mm (neutrophil 71.8%, lymphocyte 19.1%, monocyte 5.9%), reticulocyte 1.9%, platelet 93,000/mm, Fe 12.8 ug/dL, TIBC 204 ug/dL, ferritin 941.47 ng /ml, haptoglobin 0.72 g/L, vitamin B12 508.17 pmol/L, folate 24 ng/mL, total protein 6.54 g/dL, albumin 3.76 g/dL, Alk. pohsphatase 79 IU/L, AST 30.0 IU/L, ALT 39.7 IU/L, total bilirubin 0.57 mg/dl, BUN 79.4 mg/dl and creatinine 10.18 mg/dl. Peripheral blood smear showed the normocytic normochromic anemia with anisocytosis. Anemia was diagnosed but it was irresponsive to the recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) and blood transfusion. In the bone marrow aspiration smear were there the hypoplastic myeloid and erythroid precursors. The bone marrow biopsy section showed the hypoplasia of all components (10-20%) and the fatty infiltration. We have experienced one case of the idiopathic aplastic anemia in a patient going through hemodialysis and we just report it with documentary records. 저자들은 혈액 투석 중인 환자에서 약물, 면역계 이상등의 원인을 발견할 수 없었음에도 재생 불량성 빈혈이 발생한 1예를 경험하여 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the chemical quality and characteristics of groundwater in the area of Taejon university, and to suggest long-term strategy for groundwater management. The geology in the study area is mainly composed of Jurassic biotite granite and schistose granite, and phyllite and shistose phyllite of Okcheon system. All groundwater samples except one sample were classified into Ca-HCO3 type in chemical composition, and showed the hardness ranging from moderately hard to hard. The pH of groundwater showed weak acidic and neutral conditions. The results of factor analysis of hydrochemical data indicated that major chemical constituents of groundwater were derived by three main factors: the contribution of two different water-rock interaction processes and the effect of contamination. A part of groundwater samples showed a little high iron and nitrate content, which were likely to be influenced by contamination sources. The environmental assessment of groundwater hydrology and regular monitoring work should be carried out to maintain high quality and plentiful quantity of groundwater in Taejon University.

Objectives : Risperidone and olanzapine, which are atypical antipsychotics. are widely used in the treatment of schizophrenia as the 1st line drug, proving their effectiveness for both positive and negative symptoms. They also have many advantages even from the side effects. However, they show differences with the chemical structure and pharmacokinetics and they work differently to receptors. Researchers have studied the effect and side effect during the acute phase of schizophrenia as an open prospective study. Methods : Forty subjects with DSM-IV schizophrenia or schizoaffective patients including 1) 1st onset schizophrenia patient, 2) patient who has been treated by the prior antipsychotics and not improved or even worse to be admitted again, were assigned to receive risperidone or olanzapine for 6 weeks. Psychopathology, adverse effect. weight change, fasting serum glucose, and drug cost were compared within and across groups. Results : After 6 weeks later both treatment groups showed the significant decrease in PANSS positive, general psychopathology and total score while they did not show any significant difference between two groups. Risperidone group, however. showed the significant decrease in PANS negative score, which olanzapine group did not. In terms of adverse effect risperidone group showed more extrapyramidal symptom than olanzapine group. Body weight rised significantly after Gweeks, but no significant difference between two treatment groups. There were no significant indrease of fasting serum glucose level. Conclusions : Risperidone and olanzapine are effective drugs which can be used during the acute phase of schizophrenia. Risperidone is expected to shorten the admission day and remission of the symptom of acute phase, mile olarizapine is more advantage in a neurologic side effect than rispendone.
광주전남지역 정상 신생아의 코의 형태와 계측치에 대한 연구

Background and Objectives: Cleft lip and palate are common defects in congenital deformity. They are the most frequent deformity in the face. Nose deformity is most common among various facial deformity at the center of face. So we must operate to correct the deformity at the earliest stage to give a patient and parent spiritual relief from anxiety, and it is the trend of the treatment recently. We must know the facial anthropometry in newborn to try at the early stage, but there is a lack of literature and research on newborns. So we carried out this research to form base data for operations. Materials and Methods : The noses of 90 newborns in Gwangju-Cheonnam area were analyzed quantitatively, based on 10 nasal measuring points and 13 anthropometric values taken directly from the face of newborns. The relationship between the nasal measurements were studied in 11 proportion indices. Results : Following are our mean values in newborn. Width of the nasal root was 13. 9mm. Width of the nose was 22. lrnm, Width of the columella was 4. 5mm. Height of the nose was 22.6mm. Length of the nasal bridge was 20.1mm. Nasal tip protrusion was 8.9mm. Width of the nostril floor was 6.4mm. Thickness of the nasal ala and length of the nasal ala were 4.0mm, 15.4mm. Length of the columella was 3.9mm. The most common nostril shape was Type II (0-45 degrees in inclination of the nostril axis from the horizontal). Nasal index was 97.8. Columella-nasal tip protrusion length index was 43.9. Conclusion : The development of the columella was relatively incomplete in the case of newborn and was the result to appear. The normal indicies could be used clinically in identifying the it's normality as well as morphologic characteristics of the craniofacial structures. They also could be used in differential diagnosis between the morphologically similar congenital craniofacial anomalies. In preoperative design, in setting the criteria of the postoperative results, and assessing the effect of the operation, Finally, they supply the plastic surgeon and the other specialists in the craniofacial surgery with basic normal population data.

Background and objectives : The face is the one of the most variable parts of the body and characterized not only by separated part but also by interrelation of the parts. Especially, in the case of bilateral cleft lip and palate, compared with unilateral case, it is necessary to establish the facial anthropometry in newborns, because of current trend of early intervention, such as fetal surgery, lip adhesion, and nasoalveolar molding device. Millard presented the concept of rotation advancement for unilateral cleft lip repair, and, thesedays, this method of cleft lip closure is acknowledged as the most optimal principle. However, it can produce a scar that crosses the upper one third of the philtrum obliquely. The purpose of this study is to determine the configuration of the vermillion tubercle, the Cupid's bow, and the philtrum, and to suppose that which anthropometric data and proportional index could be significant to determine the configulation of the philtrum in case of bilateral cleft lip and other deformity, which can't identify the philtral shape. Materials and Methods : 74 newborn infants, who were full-term normal infant In Gwangju-Jeonnam area were examined from April to June 2003. Mean gestational ages were 39 weeks. Mean birth weight was 3.3 Kg. Five anthropometric data, which were base of columella to tubercle, nasal base to Cupid's bow peak, Cupid's bow to commissure, philtrum, peak to peak, and mouth width were measured. And the proportional indexes of each data were evaluated. Morphologic parameter, which were the shape of vermillion tubercle, the Cupid's bow, the philtrum, were analized. Results : Mean values of five anthropometric data were 14.1±2.2, 10.5±2.7, 16.5±2.5, 6.9±1.8, and 26.7±4.9 each. And the one of these, Philtral width, peak to peak, and 7 proportional indexes which were ①/④, ②/④, ③/④, ⑤/④, ④/③, ④/②, ④/① have a significance according to 3 types of the philtral shape. The most common shape of vermillion tubercle is protrusion type (89.2%), and that of Cupid's bow is normal type (52.7) and that of philtrum is parallel from nostril base to vermilion border (70.7%). Conclusion : My study supplies the plastic surgeon and others with specialized interests in the craniofacial surgical area with fundamental normative population data that will help them decide what IS abnormal. And corrective surgery of the face and cranium is becoming so precise that the techniques and data detailed in this paper are essential to its further development.

Nine cattle among 18 in a native Korean herd died or were euthanized within 3 days. The affected cattle showed cowshed. The pigs and dogs had been fed leftover food originating from nearby restaurants, and the cattle could presumably reach the contaminated food in the pig troughs. Necropsy revealed a few chicken bones and red pepper pieces as well as large amounts of grain and rice straw hay mixed in the rumen. Botulism type D was isolated in the ruminal contents of one of the cattle. We speculated that the outbreak was associated with the cattle incidentally eating presumably contaminated leftover food from the pig trough.

<P>Water soluble fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (FCP) obtained from a single natural source, mango fruit, were developed as unique materials for non-toxic bio-imaging with different colors and particle sizes. The prepared FCPs showed blue (FCP-B), green (FCP-G) and yellow (FCP-Y) fluorescence, derived by the controlled carbonization method. The FCPs demonstrated hydrodynamic diameters of 5-15 nm, holding great promise for clinical applications. The biocompatible FCPs demonstrated great potential in biological fields through the results of in vitro imaging and in vivo biodistribution. Using intravenously administered FCPs with different colored particles, we precisely defined the clearance and biodistribution, showing rapid and efficient urinary excretion for safe elimination from the body. These findings therefore suggest the promising possibility of using natural sources for producing fluorescent materials.</P>
