초고속 광통신용 Avalanche photodiode의 제작 및 특성에 관한 연구

We review the characteristics of Avalache photodiode(APD) for long haul and high bit- rate optical fiber communication system including basic operating principle, excess noise factor, and bandwidth, and we also summarize recent progress. Separate absorption garding, charge and multiplication APD with charge plate layers instead of guard ring was designed and fabricated using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition and reactive ion etching technique. APD shows 37∼48V of breakdown voltage and very low dark current less than 10 nA at 90% of breakdown voltage. Receiver consisting of APD and Ga As pre - amplifier shows sensitivity of - 33.6dBm in the application of the pseudorandom 2^23-1 non- returen- to- zero(NRZ) patterns at 10^-9 bit error rate(BER).
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus를 동반한 Multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis and lupus erythematosus are chronic, potentially disabling diseases of unknown cause. It is a rare occasion that the finding of both diseases occurs in one patient. Because both diseases may affect the central nervous system, it may be difficult at times to differentiate symptoms of lupus erythematosus from those of multiple sclerosis. As far as we know, there was no case report of SLE in multilple sclerosis in Korea. We report a case of multiple sclerosis accompanied by SLE.

저자들은 국내에서 처음으로 음핵 비대와 지속적인 질출혈을 주소로 내원한 19세 여성에서 고혈압이 동반되지 않으면서 11 -수산화효소 결핍으로 인한 선천성부신증식증을 경험하였기에 문헌 고찰과 함께 이를 보고하는 바이다. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia refers to a group of autosomal recessive disorders that is defective in the synthesis of cortisol. The enzymes most often affected are 21-hydroxylase and 11 - hydroxylase. The low levels of cortisol stimulate the pituitary gland to release ACTH. Chronic elevation of the ACTH level causes bilateral adrenal hyperplasia and a secondary increase in androgen formation. We examined a 19 year-old woman presented with clitoral hypertrophy and vaginal spotting. The subjects basal level of serum cortisol was low, but the serum levels of ACTH, 17a-hydroxyprogesterone, deoxy-corticosterone were elevated. The urinary excretions of 17-ketosteroids and 17-hydroxycorticosteroids were also increased. The karyotyping study and transrectal ultrasonography showed normal findings. The patient underwent clitoris reduction surgery and received hydrocortisone. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of 11 -hydroxylase deficiency in Korea (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 19:58∼63, 2004).
Genome-Wide Association Study of Rice Core Set Related to Grain Weight

Rice is being consumed in over 50% of the world's population, and it is main food in Korea. Many accessions of rice have been utilized for breeding purposes such as the use for functional food, disease resistance, improved quality and yield. In this study, the 1000-grain weight, one of important components for yield in rice, was investigated and analyzed by conducting a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using whole genome SNP genotype data on 295 Korean rice core sets. Four genes, Os01g0315700, Os03g0604566, Os04g0413500 and Os05g0216950, are significantly associated with 1000-grain weight. We presume carefully that the function of these kind genes will help in the selection of intermediate parents with high yield and genetic markers to develop new varieties.
The Structure of BC3N Tubular Nanofiber Synthesized by Using PECVD

Boron carbonitride (B$_x$C$_y$N$_z$) nanotubes were synthesized with a gas mixture of C$_2$H$_2$, NH$_3$, N$_2$ and B$_2$H$_6$ by using dc plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The compartmented B$_x$C$_y$N$_z$ nanofibers were vertically aligned on the substrate with a diameter of $\sim$70 nm and a length of $\sim$3 $\mu$m. The transmission electron microscope images showed the B$_x$C$_y$N$_z$ nanofibers to be nanotubes with a well-aligned wall structure. The images of an elemental mapping taken by using a transmission electron microscope equipped with an electron energy loss spectroscope showed that the carbon, nitrogen, and boron atoms in the compartmented B$_x$C$_y$N$_z$ tubular nanofiber were uniformly distributed. The atomic composition ratio of the B$_x$C$_y$N$_z$ tubular nanofibers was investigated by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The estimated ratio of each chemical component of the compartmented B$_x$C$_y$N$_z$ tubular nanofibers was $x$ = 0.37 (boron) : $y$ = 1.0 (carbon) : $z$ = 0.36 (nitrogen), which is very similar with that of BC$_3$N. Based on the experimental data, we suggest a chemical structure of the BC$_3$N nanotube that is consistent with the structure obtained from a theoretical calculation. Two cases of TSC2/PKD1 contiguous gene deletion syndrome

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC, MIM#191100) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous syndrome caused by mutation or deletion of TSC1 encoding hamartin or TSC2 encoding tuberin and characterized by seizure, mental retardation, and multiple hamartomas or benign tumors in the skin, brain, retina, heart, kidney, and lungs. The TSC2 gene on chromosome 16p13.3 lies adjacent to the PKD1 gene which is responsible for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (MIM#173900). The TSC2/PKD1 contiguous gene syndrome (TSC2/PKD1 CGDS, MIM#600273) is caused by deletion of both TSC2 and PKD1 gene. We recently experienced a 15 month-old boy and a 26 month-old girl with TSC2/PKD1 CGDS confirmed by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) analysis. They showed not only typical neurologic manifestations of TSC such as epilepsy, subependymal nodules, and subcortical tubers, but also polycystic kidney disease. The contiguous gene syndrome involving PKD1 and TSC2 should be suspected in children with enlarged polycystic kidneys and TSC. MLPA analysis is a useful method for the genetic confirmation of TSC2/PKD1 CGDS.

Nodules are frequently observed after soft tissue augmentation. Chronic and intractable nodules that persist for months despite such procedures may become increasingly fibrotic, and thus require excision due to the possibility of foreign body granuloma. A 48-year-old female presented with multiple skin-colored nodularities on her forehead. She had received hyaluronic acid (HA) filler injections for forehead volume augmentation one year prior. The patient was treated using a minimally invasive intradermal needle RF device twice at 1-week intervals. The treatment resulted in significant improvement of the forehead contour. We suggest bipolar RF as an effective and safe treatment method for implant nodules.

Background/Aims: This study was performed to compare the mucosal findings after esophagogastroduodenoscopy in two groups before and after the use of alendronate only and following administration of the enteric-coated alendronate (5 mg) and calcitriol (0.5μg) combined drug (Maxmarvil, Yuyu Co.). Methods: The study population consisted of 33 postmenopausal healthy female volunteers, aged 50 to 70 years (mean age, 58 ± 5) without gastrointestinal symptoms and with normal baseline endoscopic findings. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy was performed at baseline and was repeated 2 weeks later after daily intake of Maxmarvil (n = 17 subjects) or alendronate only (n = 16 subjects). Mucosal injury scores were reported by an endoscopist after 2 weeks of treatment with each medication schedule. Results: Esophageal mucosal injuries developed in two of 16 subjects in the alendronate only group and 0 of 17 in the Maxmarvil group. Gastric mucosal injuries developed in eight subjects in the alendronate group and four subjects in the Maxmarvil group; this difference was statistically significant. Conclusions: The mucosal damage scores for the alendronate group (total score 24) were significantly higher than those for the Maxmarvil group (total score 9) in the esophagus and stomach. Therefore, this study suggested that enteric-coated Maxmarvil is less harmful to gastrointestinal mucosa than alendronate, and may improve the tolerability of osteoporosis medication in clinical practice.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of action, efficacy, and safety of the needle-free pneumatic injection using hyaluronic acid (HA) solution with a mouse model. Methods: We evaluated the efficacy and safety of a microjet device that pneumatically accelerates a jet of HA solution under high pressure into the dermis of mouse skin. We examined the treatment effects using skin hybrid model jet dispersion experiments, photographic images, microscopy, and histological analyses. Results: Use of the pneumatic injection device successfully increased dermal thickness and collagen synthesis in our mouse model. The mechanisms by which pneumatic injection using HA solution exerts its effects may involve increased dermal thickening, triggering of a wound healing process, and activation of vimentin and collagen synthesis. Conclusion: Collagen synthesis and increased dermal thickening were successfully achieved in our mouse model using the microjet device. Pneumatic injection of HA under high pressure provides a safe and effective method for improving the appearance of mouse skin.
